I would like to suggest Mah Jong again.
It is the game that we initially started the games meetings for, but only got around playing it once.
Now as we have exactly four players it would be nice to play a round or two. Once you get into it, it takes about 1/2 - 3/4 hour go play a round.
Of the games Figgy suggested, I think I'd favour Pillars of the Earth.
Would also still like to learn St. Petersburg.
Maybe we can narrow it down to one or two games and Figgy doesn't have to bring loads of games?
Marymanu, what would you prefer?
7 p.m. OK for everybody?
Poppins
Jun 3 2008, 12:05 pm
Well I think we should just go with majority rules so whatever the most people want to play is fine by me. I would rather play a strategy board game then Mah Jong but if more people are interested in that then I am game as well
Figgy
Jun 3 2008, 12:56 pm
7pm is OK.
Since Hammonia is hosting and would really like to play MahJong, and if we are exactly 4 players I suggest we play a round of that and a I could also bring one other game. If we don't waste too much time we should be able to play both.
Glad you like the videos Poppins, and there are plenty more and always more being uploaded. Galaxy Trucker does look like fun in the video, I played one small round of it and I really like it, it has really nice pieces, but it's not a deep strategy game. I wouldn't mind playing it if everyone else wanted to. For a shorter game you can play fewer rounds.
Of the strategy games I suggested, Power Grid is probably the easiest for new players to learn.

Bad news, I might not be able to make it as I might be going to the American Club dinner on Thursday with work. I'll find out tomorrow and let you know.

Are you in for tomorrow, Laurel?
Otherwise we're only three people tomorrow so far...?

Jun 5 2008, 6:19 am
I think I can make it tonight, but I can't stay too late. If it's just going to be 4 of us, I'd love to play one of the "serious" strategy games. What about Hamburgum? It's a game where you build the churches in 17th century Hamburg. (Did I get that right?) It's lots of fun. I just got a new one and I can bring it. Also Settlers or St Pete's, if you prefer.
Hammonia
Jun 5 2008, 7:12 am
Oh, right, Hamburgum, remember you telling me about it - sounds good to me.
So why don't you bring your games and Figgy brings the two we narrowed it down to, then we decide tonight what the majority wants to play?
See you at 7 girls
marymanu
Jun 6 2008, 8:07 am
Lots of fun last night, girls. We played Hamburgum and I was home way past my bedtime, but oh well! I'd really like to try that game you brought next time Betty. I'm also fiending for another game of Settler's Seafarers.

It was a really nice night of gaming. Thanks so much Hammonia, for hosting.
So many games to play so little time!
Let's start planning the next one!

Pleasure, Figgy - I had a lovely evening.
Really liked the game

Next week I can do Thursday (definitely) and Wednesday (maybe).
Where are we playing?
I like Steph's idea about Nox resp. Green and Grill, but if we go there, maybe we can start earlier, sth. like 5:30 or so? It wouldn't make much sense for me going home first, and I'm round the corner from Nox already...
Figgy
Jun 6 2008, 9:30 am
I also like the idea of Nox. I can do Wednesday. Thursday is a maybe.
Steph0313
Jun 6 2008, 10:29 am
I can make either evening and especially if we are going to go to NOX! Jungfernstieg is so much more central and maybe more people will join us.
If we have good size crowd, how about we split the groups in two and have one strategy game going (for those who like something a little more challenging) and one lighter social game (for those who are new to gaming or new to the group, or just want to get out and have a great evening

)
5:30 is a great idea for those who want to meet up for dinner first and we can plan to start the games at 7:00 pm. How does that sound?
Steph0313
Jun 6 2008, 10:42 am
I just looked at the long term weather forecast

it's suppose to rain all next week! What's up with that?
Hammonia, do you know if Nox will still be suitable if we need to be inside?
jeppjess
Jun 6 2008, 11:05 am
I would love to come next Wednesday evening...
@steph - would you be catching the train in? Maybe I could meet you on the train in Altona and we
could go together on a group ticket...Maybe you would like to join us too Figgy and Zoe?
Hammonia
Jun 6 2008, 11:09 am
Not sure about NOX inside, I've been there for business lunch a few times, and (but that's really only MY liking) the atmosphere is a little (how do I put it) stiffer/stylish...? They probably wouldn't mind us playing, but me personally I would feel odd playing there...
edit: we need to clarify:
NOX is the bar (on the right hand from where we sat on Saturday), the restaurant is called Grill and Green, and the outdoor seating belongs to Grill and Green, but they do serve the cocktails there.
So if we are talking about playing inside, we are talking about Grill and Green, right??
Steph0313
Jun 6 2008, 11:10 am
Jeppjess, that would work for me. Zoe is away on a lovely holiday, so she won't be joining us, but Figgy???
Hammonia
Jun 6 2008, 11:17 am
Figgy, when can you say if Thursday would work for you?
I everybody doesn't mind, I'd perfer Thursday...
jeppjess
Jun 6 2008, 11:22 am
Wednesday would work better for me...but if the consensus is Thursday, maybe next time.
Let me know.
Steph0313
Jun 6 2008, 11:34 am
Wednesday actually works better for me as well as I do have some stuff going on already on Thursday, but I can be flexible.
Hammonia
Jun 6 2008, 11:37 am
if it's the stitch and bitch on thursday, maybe you could swap that to wednesday?
but really, only if figgy can make it on thursday too, and the others.
i could also make wednesday, but it's a bit inconvenient, so would prefer thursday.
but would of course go with the majority.
Figgy
Jun 6 2008, 1:35 pm
I definitely can't do Thursday. I have a function to attend with my daughter that evening.
We haven't considered Tuesday yet either, I would be also available on Tuesday.
Hammonia
Jun 6 2008, 1:39 pm
Sorry, can't make Tuesday.
But lets go for Wednesday then, it'll just be a hard day, so if I'm too tired, I might drop out on short notice.
Figgy
Jun 6 2008, 2:20 pm
It does look like rain for next Wednesday.

It looks like the inside tables at the bar are like low coffee tables and not so good for games. I agree with Hammonia that it looks a little too 'classy' for boardgames. If we have to sit inside at the restaurant will we have to order food? Are the tables there big enough for games? Pic and price lists for food and drinks are on the website
www.noxbar.de and www.grillandgreen.de. We should ask to make sure that they wouldn't mind us gaming there.

Wednesday works great for me! I am up for any of the games which people are interested in, and on Wednesday I can be flexible with location as well. Thanks for hosting yesterday Hammonia it was a lot of fun:)

I would like to offer my place as a venue for Wednesday's game night if we can't find a suitable place in the city.
Who would be willing to come to Blankenese?
Steph0313
Jun 7 2008, 2:18 pm
I would!
Hammonia
Jun 7 2008, 4:54 pm
Blankenese would be fine for me, but I can't make 5:30, would have to be 7ish.
Figgy
Jun 7 2008, 8:21 pm
It would have to be 7-7:30. I have to get my kids fed before we play.

Jun 8 2008, 5:07 pm
I can come to Blankenese too!
jeppjess
Jun 8 2008, 5:08 pm

@steph - would you still be training? we could share a ticket still if so...

Jun 9 2008, 9:32 am
Hey Jess - that's a great idea. We can arrange meet-up through email.
Figgy
Jun 10 2008, 1:42 pm
Anyone else coming for games tomorrow night?
Looks like we will be 4 so far...
Hammonia
Jun 10 2008, 1:55 pm
I'm still not 100% sure, will decide tomorrow, depending on how long I have to work and what comes up in the office (looks like it might become a trouble-day already...)
Figgy
Jun 10 2008, 2:28 pm
No problem if you can't make it Hammonia. Playing games isn't as enjoyable when one is really tired, and I was hoping to play a strategy game. Just let me know tomorrow.

Jun 10 2008, 6:01 pm
I think I am in

I can tell you for sure tomorrow morning. What game were you thinking about?
Figgy
Jun 10 2008, 6:04 pm
Since it looks like it will only be a few of us, how 'bout we meet at the Frieda am Park cafe? Not that I mind having it at my house. Just thougt it would easier travel for those involved. Unfortunately (and for some strange reason) the Café closes at 10pm so we should get an early start if we want to finish a big game. Shall we say 7pm?
What shall we play? I'd like to suggest Power Grid (Funkenshlag) or Caylus, or any of the others I previously mentioned. Any other suggestions?

I can't come this week guys. I'll miss you!

What about next week?
Could do Wednesday...

Figgy, either game is fine with me. So bring your first choice and that way you will only have to bring one game with you.
See you soon.

We had a fun night of gaming at Frieda's last night. The café was lovely and the food and drink was good. It was fairly quiet, not crowded and the tables were adequate. The owner is really nice and she said we could have our meetings on a regular basis there on Wednesday evenings.
Maybe we could try and make it a regular thing at Frieda's on Wednesdays and we could have additional get-togethers at other locations from time to time?
Unfortunately, I can't make it next Wednesday as I have something else to attend that evening. Do carry on without me.
I can do Tuesday or Thursday if anyone wants to do extra gaming next week.
Hammonia
Jun 12 2008, 8:13 am
Wednesday is more convenient, but I think I could also do Thursday - shall we see what the majority prefers?
jeppjess
Jun 12 2008, 4:27 pm
I had a great night too last night and would love to make this a regular Wednesday thing (the best day for me)...
The owner was so friendly and accommodating and even has a small games library in the cafe...
It felt like we had been playing at her house, it was so comfortable...so I second the motion of having a regular Wednesday night there
if others can make it...
It's only a 10 minute walk from Altona Station and right near the number 1 and 115 bus...
so most people should be able to get there from where ever they're coming from pretty easily...
I suggest we make it 7pm sharp...so the gaming can start almost immediately.
If people would like to order food (as I did last night), there was no problem eating, while continuing to play the game...
this way we get to jam in more gaming!
I hope more of you can join us next week...it was ace!
And if anyone is interested, they are also screening all the football games on a projector screen, so you can tune in every now and then for the score...
and even with all this, it WASN'T crowded, smokey or loud...
Steph0313
Jun 12 2008, 5:05 pm
I agree with you ladies, last night was really lovely and chilled out. Great game Figgy.
I have long been thinking that it would be ideal to have a set location and time. Frieda am Cafe certainly seems idea, especially since the owner was so accommodating and actually encouraging us to become regulars.
Shall we try again next Wednesday? Maybe play Ticket to Ride - (Zug um Zug).
jeppjess
Jun 12 2008, 5:57 pm
Sounds great, have been wanting to play that since I arrived here in Deutschland!
I'm in...
Hammonia
Jun 12 2008, 7:36 pm
When we started the regular games we said we do not want it to be the same weekday every week as that would make it impossible for some people to attend (by the time there were a few people who could generally not do certain days of the week due to childcare, other groups etc.).
I still think changing the days depending on which day is most convenient for the majority is a good idea. Especially for those who have fulltime jobs.
Also for me, personally, the changing venues are a better idea than only one venue. Altona might be easy to reach for some people, for others its a pain in the bum to get to.
I'm certainly willing to travel the extra mile, but if it's going to be Altona EVERY week, I'm pretty much out.
