Could you bring Blokus again? It was fun, and easy and quick to learn, good if we have to (or want to) split up in different groups.
I'd also like to learn St. Petersburg if possible.
7 p.m. sounds good to me.
In case the weather isn't so good, is it ok (light, space etc) for games inside?
Figgy
May 12 2008, 7:53 pm
I would definitely suggest reservations if we are going to the Country Kitchen. It is a restaurant so we would be expected to have a meal. We should ask just to be sure that it would be OK for us to play games there as well. There is enough room and light with good size tables inside. It would be nice to sit outside if the weather is nice but around 10pm it might get to dark to play games. Space permitting they might allow us to move inside if necessary.
Yes, I can bring Blokus again.

I woulnd't mind at all having a meal there, but in this case would suggest to meet a little earlier, remember last time it was very late when we actually started playing.
What do you think? Can you guys make it earlier? I could make 6ish, would come streight after work.
edit:
So at the moment it's:
Figgy
Steph
Marymanu
Poppins
Shell
Hammonia
Megan???
Anybody else? What about the significant others?
2nd edit:
@Figgy
Could you do me a big favour and bring the English instructions for Bang!, incl. those little short descriptions that we had last time? I'd like to borrow it until the next meeting as I bought the German version and would like to make a mixed instruction in German AND English. If you'd rather not give it away, maybe you have a scanner or copymachine at home and could make a copy for me?
Thanks very much in advance.

Hi,
I think meeting at 6 is a great idea

. You are quite right Hammonia, we otherwise might not get the chance to play many games.
See you all on Thursday.
Poppins
May 13 2008, 1:09 pm
Well I work until 6:30 and Blankenese/ Klein Flottbek, etc are all half an hour away so even 7pm is cutting it close for me. I know Thomas would be interested in playing games but I don't know if I would be able to convince him to drive the twenty minutes to Klein Flottbek although I could/will try.
So as of now I am undecided due to the distance but will really try to come if we could keep the time at 7pm.
I was also wondering if a place in Altona or Sternschanze would be more centrally located as then it would just be the S bahn I believe for most people. I do know of a cafe/restaurant called Schanzenstern which is about 5 minutes walk from U/S Sternschanze that is big enough and I am quite sure that they wouldn't have a problem with people playing games. Just an idea for sometime in the future not necessarily for this week:)

Hi Poppins,
It was nice meeting you last week

If you have a closer look at this thread (and others ref. to venues for board games) we are having quite a hard time to find places for the games that are convenient for everybody, as they have to be both close to U-Bahn/S-Bahn AND decent parking.
I could easily come by train, but to be honest, as it's late when we finish, I like to come by car, am not a big fan of the trains alone late. Nothing has ever happened to me, it's just such a feeling.
Since Betty made the effort to come to our end of town quite a few times, I think for this time we should go for the Country kitchen, which is closer to her. I'm sure that we will be back at Café May at another time, which is more convenient for you, Laurel, me and others.
There should also not be a problem for people to come a bit later, even if we generally agree to meet at 6 (see last week).
Personally, I like the idea of Country Kitchen at 6 p.m., but will of course follow the majority.
Figgy
May 13 2008, 2:53 pm
It is difficult to find a location suitable for everyone. I think we should keep it at Country Kitchen 6pm for this week, since most have already said that would work for them. I don't think it would be a problem if some came a bit later.
I'm willing to travel to other venues as well. Poppins, maybe you could arrange the next meeting at a place more convenient for you? To be fair to everyone we might have to meet in different areas each time.
Personally, I really like the Cafe May...if only the parking situation wasn't so bad! And I'm not a fan of travelling on the trains alone late at night either.
Hammonia - I'll get the rules and player aids for Bang! for you.

May 13 2008, 3:12 pm
I have to second the last two motions. One of the reasons I haven't gone to as many games nights as I would like, is the location (Cafe May) is far for me (when travelling by train) and I too am not a lover of travelling alone on the S-Bahn at night...especially when I miss a train and have to wait 25 mins for the next one

. However, I do think it would be great to rotate around to different locations so that everyone gets a chance to have it close to their home and also giving us opportunities to see new places.

I wouldnt be able to make it for 6pm either but I should be there for 7.30pm at the latest. I can eat something before and join you guys just for the games. Although it sounds like a lovely place to eat, I dont think i could get Joe home for 5pm in order for me to leave. Anyway see you guys thursday @ about 7.30pm.. I'll be travelling via train so I can travel back with anyone who hasnt arrived by car ...Bye for now
marymanu
May 13 2008, 6:53 pm
6 pm for dinner sounds good to me, and of course it's fine for others to arrive later. We should probably be wrapping up dinner by 7 or so, so let's say come at 6 if you want dinner or 7-7:30 to play games! See you then.
@Betty - Have you/will you be making the reservation?
Poppins
May 13 2008, 7:06 pm
The current plan of people meeting up for dinner at 6pm sounds good and I will just try to make it when I can probably around 7:30ish. I offered an idea for another week as I thought it might be closer for everyone as Sternschanze isn't necessarily closer for me but since it sounded like a few people lived around Altona that it would be easier then Cafe May .
I also think it makes sense that everyone has a week where it is closer to them and was actually just thinking today about how it might make sense for us to rotate picking the locations so everyone has a chance to have a short ride home
See you all on Thursday.

May 13 2008, 8:53 pm
I haven't made a reservation yet. I was waiting to see what the weather was going to do. Right now it looks like mostly sunny but a bit cooler. Perhaps I'll make the reservation for inside and we could try and change it to outside if it turns out to be a hot day. It gets too dark outside for games around 10 in any case. I'll do that tomorrow.
Figgy
May 14 2008, 4:03 pm
Ok, I made a reservation for 10 for 6pm. They said it would be OK if we played, but we have to do it quietly - so leave the noisy party games at home. It's a restaurant and they don't want the other guests bothered. I think they close at 11 on Thursdays, but we are usually ready to leave by then anyway.
marymanu
May 14 2008, 4:21 pm
I think there was interest in some of the Eurogames this time, so it should be fairly quiet. If there will be so many, we will definitely split into at least two groups, maybe three? Hammonia mentioned playing St. Pete, and I would like to play Hamburgum with someone who can teach the rest of us, and I am also willing to be "in charge" of the Settlers of Catan table.
Figgy
May 14 2008, 5:04 pm
Two new gentlemen have asked to join us. They know it's mostly girls and just for the food and games. I told them they could join us if they want. Well, we'll see if they actually show up.
Steph0313
May 14 2008, 5:06 pm
Hamburgum might be too big a game for the Restaurant tables as it takes a lot of space and everyone needs a little of their own personal space.
Marymanu, I can teach you Hamburgum some time.

You beat me to it Steph, just wanted to write the same.
What a great evening!
What about next week? Any suggestions?
I can't make Wednesday, it's Champions League final, Thursday only after 7, Tue would also be fine, but I'd prefer the end of the week...
Anyone in?
marymanu
May 16 2008, 1:38 pm
Thursday at 7pm would be fine for me. How about we find a venue near city center so as to be nice to all the people commuting? We never did try Cup & Cino on Colonaden. It's near Jungfernstieg which is a direct stop for all of us.
Figgy
May 16 2008, 4:24 pm
I wouldn't mind trying Cup & Cino, but Thursday is not the best night for me. Would Friday be a possibility?

Hi girls

This particular time city centre doesn't work for me at all. I'm taking the car to have the tyres changed, will probably be late anyway - can we go to Cup & Cino another time please?
edit: only just saw that Figgy can't make Thursday.
I can't make Friday - what about Tuesday? Then maybe Shell could also make it?

To everyone new who showed up this past week - it was great to meet all of you, and I'm so glad you decided to come. Hopefully we see you again soon.
Tuesday is also fine for me. When and where ladies? I don't mind where we meet as long as it's centrally located and not too expensive. The last place was lovely but I definitely can't go back there every week!
Poppins
May 17 2008, 5:11 pm
I can also maybe do Tuesday. I agree with marymanu- it would be great if we could find something a bit less expensive although it was very nice last week

Maybe Cup & Cino will still work since we are switching it to Tuesday?
Figgy
May 17 2008, 7:43 pm
I think Tuesday would be fine for me. In fact, better than Thursday or Friday. As far as venue, what ever is best for everyone else. I agree the restaurant was expensive and I wouldn't expect to do that every week either. It was just nice for a change. Generally a cafe or pub is better. I'm OK with Cafe May again if we can't find another suitable venue for everyone.
Is there anyone who can't do Tuesday?

Maybe we give the Irish Rover another go?
It's nice both inside and outside.
Wouldn't mind Cup & Cino either, but if possible I'd like to go some place where I could get something to eat as I will be going right after work again. Do they do food at Cup&Cino?
Maybe like last time, 6 for those who want to dine, 7 / 7:30 for those who only want to play?
marymanu
May 18 2008, 4:39 pm
The Rover was a little bit dark inside but if the weather is nice and we could be outside, that would be lovely. I'm not planning to eat this week but I would be surely tempted if we were going to the Rover - the food is divine.
Cup & Cino appears to serve some food. Check out the website for details.

As long as I can eat something there, I wouldn't mind. Not sure about the tables though, have you been there? The tables on the photos are quite small. Did I ask this question before? I'm getting old, this just confirms what hit me again yesterday at an old friend's birthday party. The birthday child, my best friend who was also there, and I appear to know each other for about thirty years... oh my!
edit: but I must admit I'm tempted by the Rover... and Großneumarkt is a great place to sit outside if the weather is good.
Can also get a table with a little more light than last time, the big one next to the bar... *tempt, tempt*
Figgy
May 18 2008, 5:05 pm
Either place is OK by me. I wonder if the tables at Cup&Cino are big enough? Is anyone near there tomorrow who could check it out?
I also found the Rover too dark last time...but if we can get a table with more light that would be OK.
Let's try and decide by tomorrow.
marymanu
May 18 2008, 6:05 pm
I seem to remember the tables being small at Cup & Cino. I might be able to swing by there tomorrow on my way home.

May 18 2008, 8:18 pm
Last time we were at the Rover it was dark outside already when we started, now it's much brighter... AND we can get a brighter table
marymanu
May 19 2008, 2:05 pm
It sounds like someone really wants to go to the Rover...

That's fine with me. Shall we say 6pm for dinner and 7pm for games? Hammonia, would you be willing to make the reservation?

If it's only 3-4 of us, I could bring Mah Jongg? (That's small)

I can commit myself to 75% tomorrow at 7pm, the 25% depends on how stressful work is and how I am feeling as I have been a bit under the weather the past few days. So I hopefully will see you all tomorrow.
Figgy
May 19 2008, 4:28 pm
Hammonia - OK to keep blokus one more week.
I might drag Frank along with me tomorrow. And it's possible a few of the other new guys will come.
I'll bring Funkenschlag (Power Grid). It's a really fun strategy game that plays up to 6 players. It's a long game (but you can play a shorter version)
If Frank comes along I'm sure he'll want to bring his current favourite 'Race for the Galaxy'.
But others should bring games too that they know in case we have to split into groups again.
