The Greek place sounds great to me too. Hope they have baked feta - yum! 6 pm sounds good for us. And I spoke to Graham, he is definitely coming.

McLeans has offered their pub as a location for playing games (see other thread). The location is good for me. The lighting might be a bit dim and sports on the TV might be distracting but we might be able to work around these issues.
In any case, it was very nice of them to respond and it's worth considering as a future venue.
Opinions?

I would prefer to meet at the Greek restaurant. We tried to play a board game at
McLeans a few weeks ago while there was a game on the TV and it was impossible. Between the distraction of the TVs, and the drunk people being loud and running around spilling beer on my husband and trying to tear flags off the ceiling, it isn't a great place to play games. Nothing against Mcleans, it is a great place to go drinking or to watch sports. I just wouldn't want to play a game there unless we knew for certain there wasn't any sport on that night.
@Hammonia - As for the Greek place, can we get a table in the room off from the restaurant?
edit: Or, perhaps McLeans could work if we could reserve all the tables in the left part of the bar and ask if the TV in that area could be turned off? That way we'd get a quiet area and the people who wanted to watch TV could still watch in the rear on the big projection TV.

I didn't want to change our plans for the Greek restaurant, since that was already decided we should stay with that!
But maybe
some other time if we can't find another place we could use McLean's, only if no sports are on, and its not crowded with drunks, etc. I agree it's not the ideal place for games.
Hammonia
Feb 24 2008, 11:31 am
Generally I'd agree,
McLeans is perfect for us, I said that to Laurel last week. But personally, I have never seen it THAT crowded, so generally we will have to check sports events.
For this time, I've already made the reservation and I don't want to cancel.
I reserved in the room that is a bit off from the bigger part of the restaurant, they said they were fine with us playing board games there.

Greek place - Perfect!
McLeans - Perhaps we will try it again another time. Have we agreed on 6 pm for dinner and a little later to play games?
@Figgy - Have you got any good group games in English, like Outburst, Taboo, etc? With such a large group it might be fun to play a game all together, and later split off into groups to play other games.
@Hammonia - Will you please post the name and address of the restaurant?

OK. so it's going to be
Thursday, February 28th, 6 p.m. for food, later for games
at
Taverna Omiros
Koppelstraße 24
22527 Hamburg
phone 5402824
For anybody who comes by car: there's a car park behind the restaurant, but if you come from direction Kieler Straße you will have to make a u-turn, you can't turn left on the street.
I've made reservation for 12, so far we have
Laurel + Matt
Figgy + hubby
Laurel's friend (+maybe bf)
Graham
Karin + Mat

Tor
our neighbour Britta
have I forgotten anybody?
@Figgy: can you please also bring Ticket to Ride? I got the US version, but the extension cards have not yet arrived.
Will you bring all the games or is there anything we should bring?
Figgy
Feb 24 2008, 2:15 pm
Wow, I think it's great that are so many interested in coming!
Yes, I can bring Ticket to Ride.
I can also bring some party type games that are good for large groups in teams: Taboo, 25 words or less.
I also have some other easy games that can handle 7-10 players: Apples to Apples, Bang, Bohnanza, 6 Nimmt, Wits and Wagers, Cash 'n' Guns.
I'll bring a couple other strategy games too in case we want to split into smaller groups.
It would be good to have an accurate head count by Thursday as this will help me determine which games would be best to bring.
ps you can use our real names on the participant list if you like, instead of Figgy and Hubby, Betty and Frank!

Yeah, but you have the best games

I'd LOVE to play Taboo, have never played it in English (so might really suck), I only have it in German.
Do you by any chance also have Outburst? It's one of my absolute favourites.
I also ordered the book version of twenty questions, hope it arrives on time.
I'll let you know when (if) I got the extension for Zug um Zug, but it's not been sent yet.
edit: Figgy, what have you done to me! I'm totally addicted to Zug um Zug, am playing it online now, played with Laurel today - it's really good fun
Figgy
Feb 24 2008, 9:41 pm
I'm really happy that you like Zug um Zug. Then you will probably like some of my other games as well.
I do have Outburst, but it is an older version and is very American, that is, many of the answers may be out of date or brands etc that you wouldn't necessarily recognize. Because of this I haven't played it for a long time.
Probably a better word game to play is Apples to Apples. It's another hit with most people that I've played it with and not as difficult as Taboo if your first language isn't english. The idea of it is that each player has a hand of cards each with one word which is a noun. Each player gets a turn being the judge - he turns over an Adjective card and all the other players have to play one of their noun cards to it (verdeckt). The judge chooses which noun card he thinks best fits the adjective card and the person that played that card gets a point. You get some pretty funny combinations. I also have the german version, I've only played it once because I usually play with english speakers.

@ Figgy - I would like to learn the Europe version of Ticket to Ride, but we could do it another time since you are bringing all those other games! I haven't heard back from Adrian so I am going to assume that we aren't meeting during the day on Th.
@ Hammonia and Figgy - Serious question: is it even possible to play Ticket to Ride without getting the Beatles song stuck in your head? I am failing miserably in that respect! =0)
Hammonia
Feb 25 2008, 1:21 pm
no problem, I don't have it in my head.
See it as Zug um Zug, not as ticket to ride, that might work

Turns out my colleague plays it almost every lunchtime online, now call ME addicted...
btw: you can always play as a guest, not need to register at all. The only thing is you can't open a game then. But if someone else opens and you know the password, you're fine

Let's talk about final numbers again on Thursday, I can still extend the reservation.

Can everybody please let me know by lunchtime if they (resp. their friends) will be there so that I can correct the reservation. Thanks.
@Betty: sorry the extension 1910 did not arrive yet, so I'm not bringing the game. Have to come streight from work anyway, can't leave early today. Thanks for bringing all the games, you're a star! But everybody else, please bring your games, even if they're only for 4 or 5 people, we can always make two or three tables for different games...
If our friend Julia comes, she said she would love to play poker - anybody interested?
Looking forward to seeing you all

Had a look for BANG! at amazon.de, you can get it for € 5,89 there, but it's the German version. Amazon.co.uk compared to that is a rip-off for 9,50 quid. Plus shipping to Germany. boo. Didn't find it on ebay.

Feb 29 2008, 4:24 pm
It is very hard to get the english version here and it is much more expensive. You could probably get by with the German version and a few translation downloads.
You can get Bang! T-Shirts at the publishers web-site. Cool.

Hi there,
just read the last entry. I'm afraid there will be football on and I doubt that Billy will keep the tele off since HSV is shown on the German TV and Rangers is on BBC. Both games start at 21:00. Next week is the second leg ... I'm sorry but I doubt it'll be quiet nights for board games however much I would like to have you here!!! Wiebke

Sorry guys but we have a virus in our pc at home and will bring it to a friend on Thursday who will floor it completely. Will leave the computer there so will probably not stay long and might still join you, but can't promise.

@Hammonia Shade! I hope you get your computer back soon!
Everyone: I'm willing to give Cafe May another go (it was a nice place, and it seems to be difficult to find a substitute). If I leave earlier I may have more luck finding a parking spot. Or I could take transit...
I'd be willing to go downtown too.
I'm not sure if Frank will be able to join us, he has been working late this week.
Who is still interested?

Mar 4 2008, 4:09 pm
Matt and I may be going out of town on Thursday evening so we'll have to let you guys know if we're coming. If we don't go away, we'll definitely be there. Both downtown and Cafe May work better for us, but we aren't opposed to trying new places too. I'll keep you guys abreast of our plans.

Okay, we are going out of town but not until Friday morning (early.) Matt's out but I'd like to meet up for a few games as long as I'm not out too late. Have we decided on a meeting place yet? Cafe May would be great for me!
