perhaps a slightly trivial problem, but the warranty recently ran out on my DVD player and now it's started jumping during films*, so I'm left with a bit of a dialema: do I chuck it and get a new one? sad.gif or do I try and find someone who can repair it? unsure.gif

Can anyone offer any advice? Either player related, or a good place to take the thing for repairs?

*I can give a more detailed explanation if anyone wants it, but suffice to say I did thouroughly clean both discs and player and I'm convinced the problem lies elsewhere

Dump it and get another one.

The spring retainers that maintain tension on the laser heads weaken and cause the head alignment to mis-position and jump. The springs themselves cost cents, but finding the right one can be impossible. Sometimes the laser guides are enclosed, so they can be fiddly to open and replace too.

When you can get a new replacement player probably supporting many more new formats from around €40 then the guidance to dump and replace is spot on...

Probably 60€ to repair

and 30€ for a new one

Thanks for the help!

YL I had a look inside and the laser was easy to get to - replacing springs looks a little tough mind you blink.gif

If I decide to try and repair it, can you suggest someone I could take it to?

Had a look on guenstiger and no-names start at 50 euros, name-brands start at 75 euros. So if a repair cost 60, it might be worth the effort unsure.gif

Unlikely. If it's a well known brand you may have to take it back to an authorized repair agent as only they have access to original parts. A typical repair might cost €25 to estimate, €50 for labour, plus parts, plus MwSt, plus any shipping costs incurred if the agent is not local...

Unless it is particularly valuable, or encased in antique teak, then a €50-€60 noname (and they can be found cheaper) will probably have more features and a 2 year guarantee...

hi all,

i'm looking for a DVD player repair shop...
the original poster of this pretty old thread probably bought a new DVD player back then, but I don't want to do it, since mine is a portable one that costed over 200 euros not so long ago. It's a Philips and still within the garantee period, but I have two problems:
1-it's broken because my son let it fall, so the the garantee probably won't cover this kind of damage and I'll have to pay for the repair,
2-there are no philips authorized centers in munich, so i'd have to mail it to one in leipzig and wait for weeks to have it back.

any tips are welcome.

thanks,
maria

i too have a dvd player which needs repairing and as it's a denon, i'm not replacing it with a 40yoyo model.

any suggestions welcome, apart from buying a 40yoyo replacement wink.gif

How about a 30 yoyo replacement?. What does your Denon have that it does not (disregarding reliability, of course smile.gif)
