Museum of Broken Relationships - Berlin

Share your pain for public gain

The Museum of Broken Relationships is proving to be quite the hit in Berlin. And you can donate too.

QUOTE
Museum of Broken Relationships is a project which proceeds from the assumption that objects possess integrated fields - "holograms" of memories and emotions. With its layout the museum intends to create a space of 'secure memory' or 'protected remembrance' in order to preserve the material and nonmaterial heritage of broken relationships.

Want to Become a Donor? Have you recently broken up with your love? You feel an urge to remove or even permanently destroy everything that reminds you of this painful experience. Do not do that as you will surely regeret it some time.

By registering on the web pages of the Museum you become its donor and here you can store everything that reminds you of your bygone love: e-mails, photographs, SMS messages. If your memories still trigger off painful memories "lock" your exhibits for a specified period: 3 months, 6 months or however long you need for recovering. Simply 'remove' them into the museum during convalescence and participate in creation of "collective emotional history".

The Balkan exhibition is currently housed at the Tacheles art centre and is the creation of two Zagreb artists, Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic, who split up and wanted to do something creative with the pain they were both feeling.

QUOTE
Ms Vistica says the exhibition can have a therapeutic effect.
"The normal impulse is to destroy the mementos of a relationship in order to recover, but we thought of using creativity to overcome the pain of the experience and also remember the joy those objects once held for us," she said.
The cathartic effect is evident in some of the descriptions accompanying the objects.
One woman donated an axe and described chopping up the furniture of her cheating female lover.
"The more her room filled up with chopped up furniture, the more I started to feel better. Two weeks after she was kicked out she came to take the furniture. It was neatly arranged into small heaps and fragments of wood."

Other exhibits include used sex toys and a wedding dress (unworn).

That the cheating lover ever thought she was going to get her stuff back from a woman with an axe is probably worth a museum exhibit in itself, to be honest...

Seriously, that's normal? Most people do that then? I never have! unsure.gif

Edit: Apologies for posting in the Berlin forum - only just noticed. On the other hand, I think Katrina's contribution is actually a good example of useful posting by someone from another region. It does happen.
