Hi everbody,
Does anyoneknow of a cheap way to get to Salzburg next Tuesday? There will be two of us so a Bayern Ticket is too expensive still. Are there any buses, carpools, or any other unique ways of getting to Salzburg. We are actually going to the airport there. How far is the airport from the city?
Thank you,
Z

Approximately 4.8km to the river from the airport.

Try www.mitfahrzentrale.de. Always lots of people going. Here's 2 people going next Tuesday. I looked it up for you because them websites can be tricky.

How cheap do you want it to be? A Bayern ticket will cost you €27 for up to 5 people, so that's €13.50 each, or €5.40 if you find 3 friends along the way (like hanging around the station looking for other wasters wanting a free ride), for a 2-hour train trip.
The airport is about 20 minutes by bus from the railway station - buses run every 10 minutes (bus line #2) and costs €1.80 each...

Walking would be cheaper.

Incidentally, this is the first time I've ever heard anyone complain about the price of a Bayern Ticket. €13 to travel 150km – what more do these people want?

There is no problem with trying to find a cheaper way, esp when you are a student and your funds are in US dollars. Also considering the 85 euro I paid for my plane ticket, 27 euros (roundtrip) is more than 30% of the plane ticket. Comparing 85 euros for 1800 km (roundtrip to London) and 27 euros (roundtrip to Salzburg 300 km) the train is actually quite expensive.

Then the trip from Stanstead to London is going to totally wipe you out.

Actually the train is not so much expensive as the fact that the price you paid for your airline ticket is outrageous in an environmental sense.

Exactly. The train fare is good value, the plane fare is ludicrously cheap. The reason is that Deutsche Bahn is having its funding cut further and further while the budget airlines operate in a cloud-cuckoo land where they get tax rebates on their operating costs and "financial incentives" to fly to particular airports.

As already pointed out, the fare from Essex into London will be a killer (note: bus is cheaper). Given that you are a student and therefore presumably reasonably flexible, one of the many Lufthansa flights starting at €88 return (€49 single) from Munich to London Heathrow would have worked out quicker and cheaper. Rarely are the "budget" airlines all that cheap, once you start adding in all the extras.

Yes, I agree with you there. Air traffic is a huge environmental problem. I would honestly prefer to take a night train, but that not really feasible.

I recently heard about the Lufthansa student fares so it wasn't on my find when I bought my ticket. I only booked my ticket yesterday and I don't know if i could have gotten the student rate 6 days in advance. Ill think of that next time, thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to take the bus to the city.

Six days in advance = no cheap air ticket.
I'd really reccomend flying on a non chav airline into Thiefrow (LHR), get an Oyster and your transfer is all inclusive innit geezer.
