Hi - is there an equivalent to 'Waitrose' here? Aldi.Lidl,Netto etc are the same as the UK and Reve is perhaps Tesco equivalent - but is there a better quality supermarket?

Also are there any French Style Hypermarkets??

Thanks

Where do you live? In Berlin try Reichelt, Mema. Kaufland/Kaufmarkt for Tesco-like experience.

Thanks Speedy - but we live 50km east of Frankfurt.

There is nothing on the same scale as the French style hypermarkets but you might be interested in a trip to the Walmart in Dreiech. I believe they have been bought out by Real now. It is quite large and has everything you need in one go if you are looking for basics.

Real tend to be of the larger variety of supermarkets. Maintal maybe the nearest to you.
Just click on http://www.real.de/ and enter your PLZ to find the nearest to you.
Or you could try the Hessen Center with its multitude of stores and the Toom Supermarket

If you are 50 km east of Frankfurt then you will be near Kaufland at Gelnhausen. This is not comparable to a Carrefour, but it's bigger and offers more variety than the other German supermarkets. It's the only place I can go and get everyhting I need in the one shop.

Just out of interest, there are no giant food supermarkets in D for
a simple reason. They are illegal!
When supermarkets started here a law was passed forbidding the food
sales areas of supermarkets to be more than so many square metres.
The idea was to protect corner shops (Tante Emma Laden).
The law is still in force and so food is cheap in Germany due to cut-throat
competition and no Tescopoly.
(Also (in towns) an easy cycle ride away - nice and green and healthy).

Thanks - that explains a lot!
