Furniture stores which deliver and accept Amex

Does anywhere take American Express?

I need to get new furniture pretty quickly but most places do not accept Amex [which is a requirment] and delivery terms seem dodgy..

Do you know of anywhere that fits the bill?

Thanks

Don't know if Ikea accept Amex.

Very helpful Pepper wink.gif

Blue Möbel (on Kapuzinerstr as far as I remember) accept American Express.

Bo Design (or whatever they're called) on Sonnenstr accepted Visa when we got our sofa and I think they took Amex as well.

Also check out this thread: Recommended furniture shops in Munich, Couches, beds, etc...

Thanks keydeck, the main Blue Mobel office in another city says Yes they accept Amex but the local store here said Only EC Card.

I know Ikea is also only EC Card..

I really cant get my head around what the Germans despise about Amex so much? It seems no one takes it...

Still on the look..

Slightly off-topic, but...

Germans don't like credit cards in general (they've only gained general popularity in the last 10 years, and then only because of agressive marketing by the Visa organisation), and AmEx in particular, mainly because of its name. Where it is accepted it's generally considered as a business users card and not for the unwashed public...

Personally if I see a store does take AmEx, I avoid it - (to me) it's an indication of pandering to the tourist masses and inflated prices...

Yorkshire - most of what you say is true. But not all of it.

The Amex problem lies with the fees that the credit card companies charge shops. Amex, quite simply, charge more than everyone else which basically means it's only worth offering Amex as a service if you're a company expecting a whole stack of 'tourist' customers as opposed to locals or if you're part of a chain which has enough clout to negotiate better rates with Amex.

Mulitple Choice:

a. Check out the Classified's Section on Toytown. I found a comfly chair, he didn't accept American Express, but it was free.

b. Go to the nearest American Express office for a cash advance for the furniture acquisition.

c. I am sure Drop Shop can help you out (see advertiser's on Toytown)

d. All of the above

I think it was (all true).

You just added an additional reason.

However, in the last year in a push to get more business (viz. the interminable AmEx sales stands at the airport, Hauptbahnhof and elsewhere) AmEx have been offering traders totally comission free deals, at least for 6-12 months to accept their card. I agree, however, that once special deals are removed fron the picture, or expire, an extortionate 6-8% comission is not unusual, compared with 3-4% for most other card

Amex normally charges retailers 2.95% but you can sometimes do better. Most retailers get charged around 2% for the other cards although again if you work at it you can get this down to around 1.35%.

One of the historical issues was that Amex as well as charging the retailer more - also did not pay them for 28 days, whereas all your other credit cards paid up in around 3-4 days. They also deduct their commission from every deal upfront - rather than just as a monthly bill (after the event) - which made accounting bloody impossible as well.

Amex cards are the emperors new clothes. Who wants a card that is not universally accepted?

In Germany? - one local guy I know (who granted has a low credit card turnover) gets slammed for 4% with a 60 day wait for his money. When he signed up as a trader he got a special offer where they paid HIM 2% to take the card (Visa or Mastercard, but not Amex) for 6 months. He did lots of credit card business in the first 6 months, then the special offer came to an end, so he only takes the card when he must, and then adds a 5% premium for transactions under €500... It's actually cheaper (and less hassle) to use WorldPay...
