I seem to recall that a number of us (myself included) won't be able to paddle this weekend. So looking ahead to the following weekend I'd like to propose a trip to
Ismaning Bridge.
DATE: Sunday 28th October
TIME: 11:00 - ???
PLACE:
Carpark on the east side of the river, and on the north side of the main roadAbout this location:
- The Isar at Ismaning bridge provides a good introduction to moving water and for practicing basic maneuvers such as breaking in/out of eddies and ferry glides.
- Parking is close to the river but space is limited - although at this time of the year this shouldn't be a problem
- To the south of the bridge the river is wide and quite slow moving with some big eddies behind the bridge supports - there's also a nice spot for seal launching down the bank (something like a 2 - 3m slide down the bank with a 30cm drop into the water at the end).
- To the north of the bridge there is a short section of reasonably benign rapids with the main water channel being through the center, left and right channels are only runnable at high water levels.
- Dependent on water levels there's a bit of a wave for the more intrepid beginners and intermediate paddlers at the bottom of the main channel.
- As the river widens out again the water slows and in this section there are natural eddies on both sides of the river which provide good opportunities for eddy hopping practice for the novice white water paddlers.
- There is usually sufficient slack water along the east side of the river to paddle back upstream and make the eddy hopping section a circuit.
- For the outdoor dining fans the location offers good potential with some wide gravel banks - I'll bring the BBQ's along.
NB Despite the spot being relatively friendly please be prepared to get wet - please dress accordingly.

Won't be able to make this one as I'll be in South Africa...
Could someone take a long a camera and get some more shots for the photo album ?
Cheers

If I wanted to turn up with camera (and not paddle) is there any public transport near there?
JayGee
Oct 17 2007, 12:21 pm
Hi Pootle,
As far as I can see the closest bus stop would be Am Lenzenfleck which is serviced by the 531 service between
Ismaning and Erding. It looks like a short walk from there.
I found that out using the MVV trip planner

I just saw this thread and was thinking of coming along with my camera too but Pootle seems to have that covered.
So my next scroungy question is: Is there anyone who will have gear/kayak to lend to someone who wants to give it a go? All I have is water shoes and a shorty wetsuit(Brrr). pretty please?

Hi Tom17,
There's usually opportunity to borrow boats and paddles - not everyone will want to be on the water all day.
If you get the opportunity you might look at getting a rash vest to wear with your shorty, it's not essential but it's a relatively cheap way of keeping yourself warm whilst on/in the water.
Hope to see you on the water soon.

OK then I come along and decide what to do when I get there. I will bring my shorty but not buying anything else as I am leaving Munich in a month or so. I will just freeze me nuts off, or not bother

I'll be there! =)
@Tom17 - come along and I'll freeze my butt off with you... as I too don't have all my gear yet.

I just came back into town so would be up for a paddle at Issmaning Bridge tommorrow if anyone else is up for it. It looks like some of the river levels are up from the snow last 24hrs, so the Loisach or Ammer might be ok if anyone feels like venturing further afield..Dave

FYI, Jon & I paddled at Issmaning bridge yesterday. The water level was the lowest its been all summer, although the wave is still surfable and its still a fun and easy spot. As for next weekends meet there, be warned that the water temp has dropped a lot since last week. Being upside down is unpleasant and swimming downright miserable. If you are planning to paddle with us at the weekend, be prepared for the cold. I will dig out what extra neoprene I can muster. It is essential to have a full set of dry and warm clothing to change into and some hot liquid. Yesterday it was snowing while we were on the water. While paddling its possible to stay quite warm but once you swim you need to be able to get warm and dry quickly. If its snowing or raining next weekend, we can bring a warmup tent and set that up on the bank there. Just be warned and be prepared! Also consider not paddling and just eating!

A good venue to discuss our winter ski program around the campfire...yes we WILL build a fire!!!

@WK: I could pick you up from Lohhof at 10:30ish when I travel over to PQ's to pick up boats*
* I'm thinking that I might take the tourers along (as well as my ww boat) to explore the river up and downstream of the bridge should the prevailing conditions make playing in the moving water not so appealing. These boats could also be available for anyone wishing to try kayaking for the first time with concerns about getting wet and cold at this time of year.
I'll also bring both BBQ's and something to eat - probably a chili or a stew.

Is the fire being lit when it gets dark, or as soon as we set up base camp?
Is it legal to have an open fire? Do we even care if its legal or not?
polarquest
Oct 23 2007, 4:43 pm
Madax...you worried about gettin cold!? I´d light the fire right when we make base camp, n feed it til we´re done. Legal? I´d call it community service...all that untidy drifwood lyin around...lucky theres folk like us to clean it all up. I´ll bring real beer this time to wash down the food.
Might even bring my Yak.

A PC madaxemurderer could only happen in Germany! After what Dave told me about the place, may need the fire for protection. What's on the menu for this weekend JG?? Large meatballs in gravy?
MadAxeMurderer
Oct 23 2007, 8:36 pm
PC MadAXe??? I resemble that accusation. Hmm probably have been in Germany too long. Its almost definitely illegal to have an open fire because of the fire risk. The fact that everything is bloody sodden is completely irrelevant, the law is the law. Verboten, eine Freckheit, unverschammt usw.
Personally I like a good fire, and if I bring the two rug rats reckon a fire would be good value for them too. I'm just worried about Polar our fearless leader being roughed up and taken off to the slammer for Unzulassigesfeurmachenohnegenehmigunginverbotenenort. Though God help whoever tries to give him a good rogering in prison.
Might bring some potatoes in foil to illegally cook in the illegal fire started by the subversive paddlers. TT Anarchist paddlers rule.

Unzulassigesfeurmachenohnegenehmigunginverbotenenort
Don't you just love German. Takes me back to school when I was about 5. Completely devoid of any structure & punctuation. Do Germans play scrabble? Must be a real bitch finding a word to fit the board. I guess you need one mother of a PC to calculate the scores.
While we're on the issue of regulations, might be worth checking if there are regs on potato sizes for Unzulassigesfeurmachenohnegenehmigunginverbotenenort, if you came to the idea of roasting a few tates, there's probably a rule on it and some sort of taxation.
Nice one Mad,

Bring it on!!

I guess I'll check with the Amt für Kartoffelroasteninunzulassigesfeurgemachtohnegenehmigunginverbotenenort, anybody have the phone number?
Edit looked it up, its 112. The answer is that as the fire is illegal, all sizes, and shapes of potatoe are also illegal. They also warned me that sausages and marshmallows would also be considered subversive, but they did manage to avoid the word terrorist.
Ha I'd like to see them try that in Ireland, making potatoes illegal. Lets lynch some beamters.

So, are we still on for Sunday? I went past the wave last night and it looks as if there is some more water than last week. Just be prepped for the cold...and we WILL have a FIRE ! Will plan to be there about 11am. Dave

...and if James is at Lohhof for 10:30ish he'll be there too.

Oct 26 2007, 1:27 pm
I'll be there with the mad bitch* who swam last week. Might try and teach her a little about crossing fast flowing water this time. Agnieska(the Polish woman with the inflatable boat) might be there with her son and mother. Don't know if I'm towing children.
Gotta go hunt some potatoes. Ferocious wee beasties but I'm not scared.
*I christened her mad bitch Jane, and she's very proud of the title.

So...following on from yesterdays conversation while paddling at
Ismaning...what do you think the regs are concerning "borrowing" a large, tracked excavator to re-model the rocks at the bridge to create a new rapid? Also, we could create a new surfwave in case they shut down the one in town. We could also create an out of site catchment pool for all the drowning victims so the city avoids bad PR. We don`t need no multi-million dollar development program, website or nothing like that.
Just a damn big backhoe...for about five hours, JG`s bbq and a couple of cases of beer...
Next weekend?
JayGee
Oct 29 2007, 1:32 pm
Just on the off chance that the "project" to remodel the
Isar at Ismanning is a serious proposition...
I'm afraid to say I'm blocked for the next two or possibly even three weekends with family commitments.

MadAxeMurderer
Oct 29 2007, 2:06 pm
That's a splendid idea, but we should also build a dog quenching station, which could possibly be used for washing boats and gear if there are no canine infernos to put out.
How is Gizmo? Got a soft spot for him as he hasn't tried to bite me yet.
Now if only I could develop a soft spot for the dagger, maybe the fact that my hips and knees were screaming about the pain of being crushed has a negative impact, but I felt really unstable it in, while warming very fast to Polar's seriously under volume squirt boat.

Thanks for asking about Gizmo!! He`s fine, just a little toasted on the fur! We now call him old Smoky. The others just require that you bring peace friendship offerings of meat (I know, you are a veggie...but) Least you got all your fingers still. You left with the same number of kids you arrived with right?...just they did not seem as hungry as usual when we got home...
We can take turns driving the ho...hoe..back..hoe...I mean, you do have to stop for beer when you are operating big earth moving equipment.

Graham steady on. You're making us look like a bunch of arm chair sitting, pipe smoking, ooohh that looks cold gang, not the macho image of: I'd have survived that grade 6 if the lumps of ice floating in the water hadn't hit while I was trying to handroll after throwing away my paddles that we're trying to cultivate. There is such a thing as being too keen.
I have all my fingers, last time I checked all the children had theirs. Actually the other 2 males are okay, except when Wilma is announcing her intention of ripping my throat out, and they feel the need to give her moral support. I'm sure there's a spark of doggy love buried in her somewhere.

And if the pleased phase lasts longer than 2 weeks before slipping to the
always off with mates phase, then write a book, take careful notes about what aftershave you wear, what food you ate, what conversations you had, anything that'll help others reproduce your success. You'll be a millionaire!!!
