JG & James, posted some pics from yesterday on the TT gallery. There's a few more on my Facebook if you're interested. It's easier for me to upload them there.

This thread is intended to be used for planning future paddling trips, however in this case I'll use it simply to share with anyone who might be interested in local paddling the details of a trip that three of us undertook yesterday afternoon.

Trip: Middle Isar
Put-in: Sylvenstein Reservoir Outlet (+47° 35' 26.75", +11° 32' 53.46")
Take-out: Bad Tolz (+47° 45' 46.35", +11° 33' 4.63")
Distance: ~25km
Grade: 2 (3)

Summary:
As evidenced by the number of people on the water, in a variety of crafts ranging from kayaks through to large inflatable rafts, this is a popular river trip in some beautiful scenery.

We managed the full 25km distance in 4.5 - 5 hours with just one short break for refreshments but anyone undertaking this with kids or more inexperienced paddlers might consider either shortening the trip (take-out at Lenggries?) or allowing for a few stops over the course of a full day.

Most of the white-water features are nothing more than fastish moving wave-trains with few obsticles to avoid - although there are some spots where trees can present a hazard to the unwary.

We had one portage at a largish weir above Lenggries (sign posted on the river) that wasn't running at the current water level and we also got out to inspect at a rapid below Lenggries. This feature was very popoular with the commercial rafters and it also looked to be the take-out for a number of groups. There's also a bar and bier garden at the top of the bank where we stopped for refreshments. On returning to the river I decided to portage but both Jon and Graham went for it and took it successfully, proving that there are at least two lines down for kayaks.

We were fortunate with the weather in that shortly after starting out the strong sun was replaced with cooler temperatures and for a time some quite heavy rain - I suspect that if the whole trip had been undertaken in the heat of the sun that we might of had problems. Lesson learnt: if you plan to be on the water in the summer sun remember to pack the sun-block and plenty of drinking water!

Any interest in a weekend trip?
Day1: Sylvenstein -> Bad Tolz
(Stop over night in Bad Tolz)
Day2: Bad Tolz -> Wolfratshausen

One for the longer boats and the open?

I guess we could even extend this with a third day all the way to Munich?

I'm interested JG, only prob now is finding a spare weekend this year.

I'm still interested in whitewater kayaking, class III and class IV for now. Here or other countries, available during weekdays as well. ~Alexandra

I tend to end up swimming in class III and class IV is too much for me so I guess I'm not the ideal paddle buddy for you PA - but there are a few good competent boaters around here who would be comfortable at those grades. That said if you're prepared to drop down to class II occaisionally or even support some less experienced guys on a class III trip then a few more options might be opened up.

BTW I can recommend Peter Bantock's White Water North Alps as a guide, it's slightly out of date with some of the detail but it would give you a good insight into what runs exist in the area.

Any interest for a trip this Sunday (10th Aug) - my last opportunity before we head off on our summer holiday.

Maybe a trip to Augsburg?
