JG, I think Graham is going to make a battle for the title and looking outside here today, I'd even go so far as to say he's infront by a head. Albeit a very cold head.
polarquest
The Golden Rocking Kayak award is still up for grabs tho...
williamkayak
hi
which one is it as can not see any water round either and what time and exacly where are we meeting

I thought I might do the Wiesent flat water trip this morning (as per the flyer linked by PQ) but it turns out that the Wiesent also has restrictions on it, including one that restricts access to between 1st May and 30th September. Poo!

I know that the UK (in particular England and Wales) access situation is pretty crap but at least around where we used to live there were rivers that I could (and did) paddle year round - river touring in winter is hard to beat for tranquility - but it seems that the rivers here close down for winter. Poo - again! Anyone know of any exceptions?

But what about today? Any firm plans for the ww trip mentioned previously PQ? If not maybe it's back to the bridge again, or maybe a mini-river trip on the Isar (actually I wouldn't be surprised if the Isar is also closed for business but let's not dig too deep into that)...

QUOTE (JayGee @ Apr 23 2007, 7:15 am) *
I paddled the Unterfoering to Ismaning stretch of the Isar on Sunday as planned. This is the summary of my findings:
+ Took me just under two hours at a sedate pace.
+ None of the small weirs presented any problems at current water levels.
+ I "found" a couple of extra rocks in the first two sections of rapids that I hadn't anticipated but still found my way through okay.
+ A couple of times when I took the wrong channel I found I was scraping the bottom getting back to the main flow.
+ Lots of easy options river right for landings for the first big weir portage.
+ Landing for the second portage was a little trickier as the bank was a bit higher, but there are quite a few options thanks to plenty of eddies and some fallen trees to grab hold of.
+ I forgot to mention in the second half that there are a couple of sections of rapids, the biggest of which is at the get out.
+ At the rapids at the get out, don't be tempted to go river right (car park side) as there's a nasty strainer, main flow is straight down the middle, river left also looks passable.
polarquest
JG...still watching the flow levels..look like they are rising...for sure will do something...will get back to you within the hour...

Graham & paddled at the Isnmaning wave yesterday so would like to do something different today...
JayGee
Okay - I'll hold off until I've heard from you.
polarquest
OK...going for the Holzkirchen, looks like the levels are good...call me
JayGee
Rock on Tommy! Our new best mate might be as mad as a box of frogs behind the wheel of his VW but he sure as hell knows where the best river runs are.

Photo's from today's run between Maxlmüle and Grubmüle are now posted in the gallery.
JayGee
BTW the river that we paddled was the Mangfall which apparently contributes 80% of the water of Munich - so if anyone thinks the water tastes a bit funny today it's probably because I went for a swim in it yesterday! wink.gif

Here is the gauge for the Mangfall at Valley courtesy of www.playak.com - currently reflecting yesterday's deluge with a volume at almost 16 cumecs, yesterday we had ~7 cumecs
Kirth
That just looks COLD! I'm in the skiing mode now unfortuantely...
polarquest
16 cumecs ! lets go AGAIN!!! biggrin.gif
JayGee
If it's still high enough on Sunday I'd go again but I wonder whether 16 cumecs might be too high - it could wash out the steps and increase the risk of strainers.
polarquest
Waves would be bigger tho biggrin.gif
polarquest
Or bandit run the Ammer ph34r.gif
polarquest
Mangfall is currently just under 12 cumecs...if it stay like that, it could be the Sunday option...again... smile.gif
williamkayak
you do know it will be -10 at the weekend
polarquest
Possibly -4c...Rain is forecast for Saturday which will hopefully keep the Mangfall level up. Backup plan is to go to Augsburg if the levels drop.
JayGee
I probably won't be available on Sunday due to family commitments and Saturday is also looking to be busy now. That said I hope that I might find some time over the weekend for some boating - probably Saturday afternoon is the most likely option as things stand.

I'm not concerned by freezing temperatures - in fact I think snow and ice adds to the experience and I'd quite like to get some pictures - seal launching down a snowy bank into a thin layer of ice at the edges of the water would make a great picture! smile.gif

Probably best to arrange things on the fly so that we can react to water levels and the weather conditions...
Gscrim
Looking forward to the Mangfall on Sunday smile.gif

@JG, I'd join you at Ismaning bridge for a couple of hours on Sat afternoon if you can get a pass.
JayGee
Just to be clear - it's not about "getting a pass" it's simply about trying to fit everything else in... wink.gif
Kirth
So... this is the delima for me... There's snow and I can ski wink.gif

The idea of being in the water in this condition isn't all that tempting... however, if anyone fancies a trip to austria for some skiing tomorrow, PM me smile.gif
polarquest
I might be up for an hour or so at Ismaning if we are back in time on Saturday..if not, for sure Mangfall on Sunday if theres enough water..or Augburg if not.

Kirth, kinda waiting for there to be a bit more base to go skiing, plus its prob going to be busy as hell...that said, GS & keep muttering about getting out shortly and perhaps having a day going through some basic backcountry skills ie avalanche awareness, basic crevase rescue, beacon usage etc etc if you`d be interested...I`ll put a post on the other "skiing" thread also in case anyone else might be interested...

So me make a paddle plan tomorrow on the fly?
Gscrim
@JG, alles klar!

What is the likelihood of you having a couple of hours on Sat, then?

@Kirth, was thinking of skiing somewhere next weekend. Maybe this could be the inaugural TT Paddlers ski trip. Anyone else interested?
polarquest
Yaaars on the skiing...put up a post on the ski thread...what do you think about combining..
MadAxeMurderer
Combining. Years ago we went to Scotland at Easter. There was no water, and somebody said go for the mountains and get the snowmelt. There was no water there either but lots of snow - ski resort. We watched them skiing and thought: we can do that too.

Dragged the kayaks up the slope, and sledded down on them. Security came and watched us for a while, probably wondering if they could arrest/ban us. So if you go to a certain ski resort in Scotland, and see a sign no kayaking allowed, now you know why.
JayGee
All change...

It now looks like I can paddle on Sunday but not Saturday.

A combined paddle/ski trip wouldn't work for me very well but just as long as nobody is depending on me for transport for the skiing side of things then that need not be a problem.

Just checked the Magfall water levels and it seems to be falling quite quickly - I think we'll have to make the call on this on Sunday morning.
polarquest
Yeah, Mangfall is falling but then they have rain forecast for Sat with warming temps and you saw how quick it came up last week...lets see what Sat looks like and decide Sat PM...
Kirth
I don't actually have anything really planned for sunday at the moment. Might come a long for the photo opertunity, not so sure about dipping into such cold water wink.gif
williamkayak
not sure about this weekend will think about it
polarquest
Photo ops galore!
JayGee
Mangfall is at 5 cumecs and falling - this is some way below where it needs to be so I don't think this will be on for today.

Another option is a flatwater paddle on the Isar (Marzling - Moosburg stretch) or, in the words of James Brown, we could take it back to the bridge...

I'll be talking to Tommy (local boater) this morning to see what he recommends - I'll post again after that chat.
Gscrim
Polar and I are 'taking it to the bridge' at 13:30 today for a short but sweet workout.

Anyone else up for it?
JayGee
See you there at 13:30 - I'll travel direct.
polarquest
OK...after this afternoon..I`m ready to concede that its time to wax the skis. 5 hours paddling...finishing in the dark and trying to drive home with no feeling in my feet or several of my fingers, suggests the time has arrived (saw Kirths pics on the Ski thread to...looks good at Lenggries) So...for the next paddle, I know some rivers in Chile that will be warming up soon...anyone? wink.gif
Bannockburn
Back country skiing is powder snow without end, and you guys are still boatin' !? ;-)
polarquest
OH, we`re comin... cool.gif
williamkayak
I would not advice that next weekend will be alot warmer we are talking 10 degress or so if it is that i would definatly be up for paddling will watch the weather this week

Is there any merit in creating a "trip calender" for TT Paddlers meetings for spring summer so its a little less random than it was last year?

With this in mind I think it's about time that we brought this thread back to life.

How about a flat water float on Sunday 2nd March?

Here are some options from previous posts:
QUOTE (polarquest @ Feb 11 2008, 12:42 pm) *
Yesterday, five of us & four dogs paddled from Bad Tolz to Wolfrathausen, stopping along the way to indulge in the usual TT feeding frenzy. The trip took about 6 hrs with stop. A nice mellow float and would be great for an early spring TT get together. If we planned this for some time in April, I might be able to arrange extra open canoes for those interested in paddling a canoe rather than a kayak.

QUOTE (polarquest @ Nov 8 2007, 9:41 am) *
Following info on Wiesent from "local" paddler.

Coming up to your suggestion in your forum to paddle the Wiesent on Sunday some more information from my side as I am “very local?. I was born in that area.

Best trip is to start in Doos and then float down to Muggendorf. This is a quite easy run you can do with short boats. I did this trip at least 40 times also with children groups and even with an Eskimo Nano. 16 km should take 3 hours (depending on lunch breaks etc.). The current is fine and nature is great. Some weirs give fun. All a floatable.

Shuttling is perfect. You go straight over the hill from Muggendorf to Doos (app. 2 – 3 km) instead going up the whole 16 km along the river. You can do this also by foot or by bike, but mind 16% gradient, need good breaks. Parking is no problem.

Best around that area is cheap restaurants. Schweinebraten should cost around 5 EUR, half liter beer less than 1,80 EUR. Try dark beer. That area is famous for it.

If you need further information just let me know. Our decision to go will somehow depend on the weather, because we will have to sleep in the tent.

Another tip for early March – try Waldnaab near Windischeschenbach– easy float in the beginning then speeding up to grade 2-3 (3+).

Thoughts?

JG
polarquest
2nd would be good for us. I`d suggest the float mentioned, Tolz-WRH, early-ish start, lunch/fire on the way tongue.gif

Its suitable for open canoes, the touring boats & kayaks.
williamkayak
im up for this let me know arrangements
Mysterious M
Hi there !! looking forward to some water sport in April..not sure of march coz it seems like its gonna still be cold
I have no experience in canoeing or kayaking...just did a week of river rafting some years ago...am i still welcome. This would be my first TT event n looking forward to it
Kirth
oh wow, I should actually be here for this, so I'm in. I'll let you all know if something comes up and I can't make it!
ThePigsInBlankets
I'd love to join in as well, provided I can get my hands on something that floats by then...any advice?
JayGee
@Mysterious M + ThePigsInBlanket + anyone else thinking of joining...

If I understand things correctly (not having paddled the stretch in question myself) the proposed trip should be a nice gentle float with little chance of going for a swim. Therefore it should probably be a good trip for (a) someone new to paddling and/or (cool.gif anyone who doesn't have full cold water paddling kit.

Of course there are caveats to this:
1) a swim is always a possibility however remote it might seem
2) you'll probably get a bit wet regardless of whether or not you swim - i.e. water running down the paddles or it rains.
3) it's quite a long trip (I think PQ said it took them 6 hours last time albeit at a gentle pace and with a long break) so it could be a long day if you decide after the first hour that this paddling thing isn't for you and of course you'll need a certain amount of stamina.

All that said it's highly likely that for the smallish number of people who may wish to join the trip that we should be able to get enough boats, paddles and pfds together.
- Then the only issue is likely to be how we sort out the transport and shuttles between start and end points - but we can sort that out when we have a better grip on the numbers.

@PQ: But, I'm just a novice myself - how do you see things PQ?

Should we start off one of those attendance list that some groups use?

I'll start, on the next post...
JayGee

polarquest
We should be able muster about four Ally folding canoes & two hardshell canoes. I figure we should have space for about 6-8 non boat owning paddlers if those with kayaks paddle those.

While this is a mellow float, there are also some areas that need care and its not inconceivable to capsize a canoe. The water is also really really cold!! That said, when we paddled last week, I wore only fleece clothing, but then I`m a reasonably confident paddler in an open boat. Some of the others also wore full drysuits. Everyone will need to have at least a full set of dry gear. I can bring along enough dry barrels/bags. Its also a fullday when travel/shuttle time is taken into account, and there is at least 4-5 hours paddling.

We will plan a lunch stop halfway. Each person should be responsible for bringing along they`re own food...and plenty of it, plus at least a thermos of hot liquid.

Put your name on the list asap, so I can set about mustering enough boats.
