Sorry pixie but your post 52 just proved the point.
Anyway, back on topic, i think you have to be very firm with people here in the Fatherland, it is not enough to allude to or hint at something, German people expect clear and concise expression of your wishes, be it in business or in social situations.

Well, its different because i struggle with Germans vocab. Where in the us it was easy to say go away, coz i spoke the language. And in malls there is more security. I have had a stalker before, i know how to deal with being followed, i just lack certain vocab and phrases.

I understand since my German is awful...get an mp3 player so you don't hear them. I also agree with the cell phone thing, you may want to get one so you can call if you have problems and such. Just always be alert.
Or just get angry and yell at them in English, it will confuse them. I was told by someone here that if someone is bothering me just to speak English and not attempt German. Since I am equally worried about walking around at night in the city I live in. Well not where I live but where I work. The youngins like to cause trouble sometimes.

Re mp3 player - I often have mine "off" but the headphones in my ears... yes, I wear it even at night.
For me, I find it deters alot of the comments, and I can still hear pretty well because I don't have those weird tiny stick-in-the-ear type buds. Also, it's great for eavesdropping in on other amusing conversations (if you can keep a straight face) while in public places. (Especially when they're about you!)
Otherwise, I also find that walking quickly, and not moving out of the way when someone is walking at me - and giving them the "don't piss me off or I'll ram my fist down your throat" look really deters too. Humm... then again, I am the chick who spent a couple days in a mosh pit last week so maybe I'm just mean...

the other night I was waiting for the tram, and had my earphones in, a guy kept trying chat me up, I once removed the earphones to answer his question, then replaced them and ignored him, he went on to someone else.

I would agree to a certain extent with both Carm and georgiagirl.
In London I would never have them on at night, and would find it seriously questionable during the day.
In Munich unless in a really rough area (where to be exact I don't know) I'd have no problem with listening to my iPod.
As yet in this city I've had no problem, drunk or sober, with regards to my safety.
