Passport expires before residence and work permit

So is it normal for the permits to be curtailed?

Hi Guys, I have a small issue.

I applied for an extension of residence/work permit and it was approved for next 3 years i.e till Oct 2010.

The problem is that my passport expires in June next year and now the officials want to issue my residence/work permit valid only till that date. Is it normal?

I explained them that when I get my new passport, I will carry it along with the old one always and so they can issue me the residence permit till Oct 2010 so I dont have to go for complete procedure again after 6 months.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think this is not normal. I got my NE when my passport was expiring in 3 months. In any case, the work/residence permit has to be stamped again on your new passport. They should issue your residence permit until 2010. Once you get the new passport (old passport will be stamped "Cancelled"), you need to make another trip to the foreign office and get it stamped again (they do this part quickly).

I just got my perminent one last month but the guy told me when my passport expires just come back and he stamps/updates my new passport. Don't know why your case wouldn't be any different.

This is normal. If you want your permits to be for longer, than renew your passport early, then go get the permits.

I suppose you have Indian passport. You can apply for a new passport at CGI-Frankfurt now in case no travel is planned for the next 3 weeks. CGI Frankfurt issues machine readable passports from August 2007.

Well, I certainly hope that this doesn't happen to me next week. I will apply for my Niederlassungserlaubnis (unlimited work and resident permits) and my passport expires in a year from now. That would be just ridiculous.

Same situation for me...my passport was to expire 6 months after I got the sticker...no problems, just took both Passports with me and told them I needed a new sticker and I was outta there in 20 minutes...doesn't cost anything either.

KitKat - that is exactly what I just got and as I explained, he told me just come back and he will stamp/update my new passport.

Yes, you don't have to renew your permit, but you do have to inform them that your passport number has changed. I failed to do that once and when I did go back to renew my permit when it ran out three years later they discovered that the number of the passport I showed them was different from the one they had a note of and they kicked up quite a fuss.

Just to let you know that I have received my residence/work permit valid only till the validity of passport date (and obviously the same date for my wife and son too). And they are not ready to listen anything else.

I will definitely apply for a new passport immediately and then I am not sure if I will have to go through the whole process again for prolonging of the residence/work permit (and fees which comes to 75 euros for three of us).

Thanks all for the answers though.

PS: 'Trudering_Indian', Do you know if I have to fill-up the online form for application for new passport? If yes, which passport office should I select since in online form only the passport offices of India are listed.

Fill up the Passport Renewal Application (PDF) and take it to the nearest Indian Consulate. In your case, it will be:

Consulate General of India
Friedrich Ebert Anlage 26
60325 FRANKFURT/M
Tel: +49 69 1530050
Fax: +49 69 554125

The bevaviour varies from state to state. My Aufenthalt was issued in May'06 for 2 years when my passport was expiring in June'06. That was in Stuttgart. I got my new p/p issued in two weeks, went back to the guys once again who transferred the same title to the new passport. Marked the old one as ungultig.

In a land of superlative standardisation, a rulebook does not always rule. Germans at the Auslanderberhode are different human beings as well smile.gif

I would assume that this varies from country to country, but I got an unlimited work permit (green card) in the US in 1970 and I subsequently had to have that passport riveted to all my subsequent passports to keep it valid - I guess I won't bother when I need to renew my passport next in 2014!

I wouldn't be surprised if some similar system applies in other countries.
