I finally found a place to rent movies/DVDs in English this past weekend. I thought I would spread the word since the place has a good selection of both and seems like a secret find. Seriously, I felt like I was entering the world of Harry Potter in Diagon's Alley. Or the English Double World of Munich maybe.
It is called the
English Video Club on Theresienstr. 73. It is very close to the Theresien
U-Bahn on the U2. When you get to number 73 though, it is actually an apartment building. You'll have to press the appropriate name and wait to be buzzed in. Then you'll just go down the dark hallway, knock three times, provide the English password, and you are in. No membership fee. Saturday specials. Helpful desk people (owner?). Hope this helps someone.

Sounds mysterious. Or perhaps it's a joke? You didn't give a name or password...

Hey, this
Video Club place really does exist. I'm amazed that I've never heard of it since I live just around the corner.
Can you give us some more details Bee? is it a "normal" video shop, or more like someone hocking DVD's from their garage?
How did you find out about it?

It's a normal shop on the up and up, just hard to find. I was joking about the secret password deal.
It was recommended to me by a friend, and they seem to be in the know for the expat English scene. At the desk you can also buy candy and other goodies.
Note that they have only some of their DVDs on display. they also have a cabinet behind the desk full of them. If you are looking for something in particular, ask.

Does film passage have a large selection of older films from the 70's or so or is it mostly the same selection as in German Video Shops

Does anyone know of a place besides the one in Theresienstraße, which is a pain to get to, especially by car! Also, their deposit - thing is rather annoying???
Looking in particular for stuff like Monthy Python etc.
Do let me know!
Cheers

Most, if not all of these new "24 hour" DVD renting kiosk's popping up all over the place have DVD's in english.
Go chek'em out.. The systems are in German, but the DVD's are usually in German/english/italian/turkish etc.

I use Monte Video, most DVD's have the English language to pick from, and there is also some English Video's, but I usually just do the DVD's. Great Selection of new stuff also, and they are all over the city!

Great name "Monte Video". It's the capital of Uruguay. Not a lota people know that.
Didn't realise that they were a chain. I only know the store on Frankfurter Ring (number 80-ish), Schwabing/Milbertshofen.

Check the Toytown homepage, there's a link to:
Video/DVD clubs with English language films.
Another store which was added recently in on Nymphenburgerstrasse - Editor Bob, where did the link go?!

Hi,
What is the best way of getting access to english movies(DVDs) in munich. I see lots of outlets for DVD but wonder how one gets access. How does one get membership that allows him/her to hire a DVD. And does all these DVD outlets give english movies.
Thankyou.

Most all DVDs are in multiple languages with German and English being the top two here. You have to register at all video outlets and some charge for this registration. Some places used to require a deposit with your membership, but not sure if they still do. I actually need to get my deposit back from the English Video Club.

Or...you could just buy'em. DVD's are nearly as cheap to buy as they are to rent these days. Just look @ the back and make sure there's english...which is 99% of the time. I bought "The Great Outdoors" for 5 euros at karstadt the other day...the german title doesn't make a goddamn bit of sense, however...

Yeah I was just Müllers and bought Clockwork Orange for 7.99, and The Big Red One for 7.99 also. I caved in and also bought Half baked for 9.99.

To go along with Half Baked, they also had Dazed and Confused for 5.55 @ karstadt just up the escalator at Münchner Freiheit U-bahn station (not the main store)
the german title was just Confused, I believe...but definately it.

Be careful if you buy stuff from fleamarkets and the like. We got a video once that was obviously a rip off. I mean during the movie you could see people getting up and going to the bathroom or to get more crap to stuff their mouths with. The whole thing looked legit until we watched the movie.

You can try the
English Video Film Club. They have got a pretty good collection and if you take a monthly membership, the rental charge comes down to as low as 80c/DVD.
They have a very vast collection too: non mainstream movies, foriegn films etc, many of them you wont find anywhere else in Munich.

I'll second this. Also, after I had a conversation with the guy who runs it about a very interesting non-mainstream video that they didn't have, he got it for the shop.

Second the post re: Missing Image. The staff are friendly and helpful and the owner went to school with a friend of ours...

They will also take a look at indie movies that you are interested in...
That said, one can also order mail delivery DVDs from Amango or Amazon if these shops are out of the way for you.

I angry with grobah.
Missing image is a real nice place to rent and it is pretty cheap. The workers speak english, and they have a lot of english and french DVDs.
http://missingimage.com/ and they give good advises.

I second Cape Bretoner's recomendation for amango.de . Plentyof classic/indie stuff and far broader selection than any bricks and mortar store.
