Buying furniture in Belgium or Holland

Cheaper than buying locally in NRW?

I heard somewhere that Belgium and/or Holland have some very competitively priced furniture stores near the German Border eg. Aachen etc. Is this true?

Many thanks

Answering myself...somewhat.

I already found one store on the web, which is near Aachen and delivers to NRW - don't know about the prices yet, but there must be something to it, if they deliver to Germany.

AND, best thing, they open on Sundays...

If anyone knows more though, please let me know.

thanx mishal

If you want good to outstanding quality at decent prices (as opposed to the usual Ikea type stuff), the best thing to do is go to the Cocoon show in Brussels in late November. Furniture dealers from Benelux and to a lesser extent Germany show there and offer quite good discounts/specials for stuff purchased or ordered at the show. Most will deliver to Germany, no problem.

Best to visit during a weekday, you can go by train and then catch the subway (#1 line) to Heysel.

Brilliant, thank you !

Enjoy it...it's quite a nice show and there are several good cafes set up around the exhibit areas so you can enjoy some beer, wine, pate, salad, sandwiches, etc.

Most of the items at the show are very good quality, so don't look for Ikea prices. But you will definitely get your money's worth...best buys are on bedding, upholstered furniture (sofas, chairs), storage units (think Hulsta and similar), cookware, lighting and carpets. Getting a catalog when you enter is a good idea so you can keep your head straight about what you like, prices, and vendors. Give yourself about three hours to do the whole show and more if you find stuff you're seriously interested in and want to order. Also, as soon as you get to the Brussels train station (for Heysel, get off at the Gare Centrale and catch the metro there), pick up a copy of the English language newsmagazine, the Bulletin. The classifieds in the back usually carry several ads from small English speaking companies that will do deliveries in the region, in case you find something you really like at the show but the vendor won't deliver. A lot of the vendors are from the Liege area, which makes it that much easier to get them to agree to deliver just over the border to NRW.

While you're out at Heysel, check out the renovated Atomium nearby; has a pretty funky bar at the top with a great view

By the way, as far as Ikea is concerned, you need to comparison shop. I have noticed that some items are more expensive in Belgium than in Germany and vice-versa...
