New moderator required for the TT forum

Update: We now have two new moderators

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Metachat
Pages: 1, 2, 3
Editor Bob
So, it's time again for TT to recruit a new moderator to join the existing team of five. If you're interested in helping maintain TT as the best English-language chat forum for Germany, drop me a PM. All native English-speakers are invited to apply. Write what you think makes for a good moderator on TT and why you think you'd be good at it (or could learn to be good at it).

The main tasks are... editing topic titles to make them clearer and more concise. Moving threads to their most appropriate subforum. Removing spam and other abuse. Keeping an eye on discussions to make sure they stay on topic and free from personal attacks between members. And responding to reports sent in by other members.

Note that forum moderation is a volunteer job. That has two important consequences. Firstly, and most obviously, you don't get paid. No money, no rewards, probably not even a thank you. Secondly, there is no level of commitment required. Whether you actively moderate for two hours a day, or just five minutes a week, it doesn't matter. Of course the more you're online the better, but there's no obligation.

Just my two cents perhaps it would be nice to have a moderator who is not in Munich?

Not that it matters but maybe it would be nice to show that we are a national site now?

Obviously this is nothing against the mods we have now as I like you all biggrin.gif
PES
I nominate Purple Muffin.

Ha. But just think of THE POWER you will wield. Mere mortals will cower at your feet.

Has to be don riina to add the non PC angle to moderation. smile.gif

I'm just wondering how quickly I would get sacked. I think a prawn sandwich would last longer.

Showem's in England, isn't she?
Purple Muffin
Yes she is that is right sorry. Well one of the other four could be from somewhere else in Germany maybe? Just a thought...
Keydeck
@JE, I can confirm that a prawn sandwich lasts approximately 36 hours when forgotten about because it was left in the microwave for 'safekeeping'. After that it starts to smell like something that I would imagine to be akin to Satan's taint.

oh.. jeez..
thefirelane
I nominate BadBob or djgrazy!

On a more serious note... I realize this might sound stupid as this is a website for Germany… but do we have any active forum members living in the states (ex-ex-pats?) With the time zone difference, we could have almost 24/7 moderator coverage. Just a thought.
Johnny English
Wow, what a brilliant thought. I see just a tiny weeny flaw in this plan. If there are FUCK ALL people online at 3am then there is FUCK ALL to moderate. Just a thought.
DDBug
This tempting, since I am probably online all the time - but it's not like this site doesn't distract me enough as it is ...
Eleanor Rigby
Do we get to vote on the candidates? biggrin.gif
Lifeisabuffet
I nominate Saint, Eleanor Rigby, Greentea, Jml and Eurovol. (Not sure if they nominated themselves and have time for this)

If myself, Saint and eurovol were moderators not only would this forum but possibly the entire world as we know it, implode on itself.

We're much more capable of causing drama than fixing it.
Johnny English
I vote for Editor Bob. He obviously does fuck all and just leaves all the real work to his unpaid elves anyway.
Tiggi
I think thefirelane's idea is quite a good one. Some of the most offensive and abusive topics I've ever seen on here have been in the middle of Friday and Saturday nights. Could have a US-based mod as well as another Europe-based one? Preferably trained in taming aggressive drunks.

Hey?!? Some of the best threads have been the result of late night wine sessions. At least that's how Andrea and Hams became close to my heart. wub.gif

Firstly, and most obviously, you don't get paid.

I'm sorry, could somebody explain this concept to me, a job you don't get paid for?
No I'm sorry, I can't get my head round this idea.
DDBug
That's what I said to the first moderator I met (who actually introduced me to Toytown). I never got a comprehensible answer to why someone would work for free, but to each their own.

(off to write bills since I will have been working for free until I charge the clients myself).
Johnny English
I told you before. Due to the power you hold you get "ius primae noctis" on all fit newbies.
bluedave
It's a bit like becoming a husband, you have to still put in the effort to keep her sweet but you don't get any rewards for it anymore. wink.gif

I do plenty of jobs I don't get paid for. Satisfaction is not just out of earning money you know.

For example those who have kids and pack them off to Brownies/Cubs/Scouts/football practice/playscheme etc. Do you think most of the people running those things get paid? Not likely in most cases. Or what about volunteers in charity shops?

I think thefirelane's idea is quite a good one.

So do I but for a different reason. It's easier to separate the wheat from the chaff when the pile is not being added to. It must be hell moderating a thread that's being added to at two posts per minute.
Gen
To have a mod from outside of Munich or even outside of Germany, such a person must apply for the position. Nominating other people doesn't count. Simple really.
Jeeves
Well yeah, that's kind of a prerequisite.
Once the applicants are known they should all get sent to a tropical rainforest somewhere while we get to vote them out one at a time.

Hahahaha - yeah, hilarious. Nice one. wink.gif
Allershausen
I suspect being a mod will be somewhat less rewarding than being a volunteer kiddies helper. Especially as TT is hardly a charity, the man at the helm makes his living out of it. The better a job you make of it, the more members TT gets, the more advertising revenue goes into EBs pockets. Sorry to sound so mercenary but that's the truth of it!

Indeed! I like being a cheeky, condenscending coquette too much to go over to the side of the Light.
Punchbear
When is the deadline for application? I can think of one person who'd be eminently suitable for this, only problem is that she's away on holidays until next week and won't be online 'til then.
Johnny English
I kinda think that they could take on on 2 or 3 if overwhelmed with applications. Spread the load and that.

I nominate Kay. She is always on the look out for bad spelling and poor grammar. cool.gif

Hey who moderates the moderators??? (As in who guards the guards)

No it takes a more varied skillset than that. We need to know that she enjoys pulling the wings off flies, and laughs when an elderly person falls and breaks an arm. These are the type of traits you need in a good moderator.

Showem doesnt live in Munich, she is now in the UK.
and if it were desirable to have a US based mod to take care of the drunks in Europe then EPJ would be my first choice, but I dont think she is that active any more

You mean nobody has even noticed that I've been extremely restrained of late, even when faced with umpteen "definately", "neice" or "a women", not to mention the recent "bin" instead of "been" (shudder)? I might as well go back to my bad even worse old ways.
