Sharing a "Schönes-Wochenende" train ticket

Tips on how to find four strangers to share with

Let's say I want to go to the Frankfurterbuchmesse in Frankfurt from Stuttgart. If I buy a schoeneswochenende Ticket, in order to save money, how do I get 4 more strangers to join me or how do I join 4 others going the same way. I have tried googling for this but couldn't find any suitable info. Other than advertising several weeks in advance in magazines like the Lift, is there a way to do it, other than standing with a placard at the station - wonder if that's even allowed ?

PS: I do not want to drive and am not keen on using the Mitfahrgelegenheit service.

Sharing a ticket, or reselling it, is strictly NOT allowed as a condition of the ticket, although of course people do it. One way would be to hang around the ticket machines and ask people if they are heading in the same direction as you. Or you could walk along the train asking, hoping you find someone before the ticket inspector finds you. Otherwise, there is a website similar to the Mitfahr. schemes but for people in your situation, namely Mitbahn.com.

Thanks STB. I have only used the said ticket once to travel on my own to Cologne to catch the Thallys to Brussels but I see 'Veranstaltungen' by the VHS where they actually share the SW ticket . I suppose it's okay as long as it's done in advance. Thanks for the link.

If its only you using the SWE ticket, why not save some $ and get the SWE single tix for 5 Eur or so less..

@DK: There is no such thing as a Schönes Wochenende Ticket Single. Only (some of) the Länder tickets (e.g. the Bayern Ticket) offer a single-person version. The Wochenende Ticket is always for up to five people.

@Sweetypie: By "sharing" I meant sharing with strangers; obviously if a group of people come together from a club or society then it's no problem them sharing a ticket. That's completely different from hanging around a train station looking for strangers to travel with you.

Might be a cool web-sharing type app along the lines of the ride share apps like http://www.erideshare.com/ - not sure of the details but, if you think it'd be useful I might have time to code it up.

@wiseleyb: What an offer ! If the Moderators think it's a good idea, and if it's allowed to do so legally etc., perhaps we could have a section on TT to start with.

What STB said. Hang around the ticket machines which is what all the students do. Either you'll meet up with a group preparing to buy a ticket or someone will be buying a ticket that you can tag along with. The former is legit since you've technically met and therefore planned to travel as a group already, the latter practice is, at best, questionable based on the rules of the ticket.

woof.
