The burning issues for Oktoberfest novices

Best tent, best time, the weather...

Pages: 1 2

Surely the questions should be ;

1. What would be the best tent for 11 degenerate Irish lads on a weekend away from wives, girfriends, kids, court appearances in which to savour the best the fest has to offer ?

2. Seeing as it's more crowded at weekends what is the optimum time to arrive on Saturday to guarantee both entry and a decent spot for all 11 without having to wash breakfast down with a beer and being shag all use to bird or beast by midday ?

3. Seeing as we are staying 'till Monday, are Sunday evening's a bit quieter ?

4. Will the poxy weather affect numbers attending ?

5. Has anyone seen Jimmy Two Hats ??

Take a look at this -

Wies'n Barometer

It basically tells you your chances of getting in to tents.

Red - Forget it*
Yellow - Should be some seats available.
Green - Easy

*Though will add that last year me and my colleague went on the 'last day' which was marked as red and got in to a tent easily.

Here's some more tips for a novice...

Checked out Munich nights good relevant info but considering our needs and considering the Wies'n barometer... is it worth our while trying to get into Schottenhamel for all that it has to offer or cut our losses and plump for Hofbrauhaus? Are these booked out or is it a case of getting there early enough?
Showem
If you go early enough and pay attention and find a table that has no reservation, you can get in anywhere. But this means EARLY. 10am is even way too late for 11 people to find seats together on the weekend.

Will there be signs on tables saying reserved?Dont want to give myself false hope thinking ive landed a premium spot only to find out I havent!
Showem
Yep, glued/taped to the tables. Says when the reservation starts and for how many people, ie. how many tables. Even if you can't read German, it's pretty easy to understand. In every tent (Well, perhaps not Hippodrom or Käfer, the VIP tents, but you'll have more fun elsewhere anyways) there's an unreserved section, ask the staff if you aren't sure.
Topsy
I've had tons of fun in Käfer in the past, and I'm not a VIP - not yet, anyway.
One of the good things about Käfer is it stays open until 1am.
You probably wouldn't stand a chance of getting a table in there tho, not for 11 without a reservation.

Should we cut our losses and make for a tent that we will definitely gain entry to rather than hanging around like drowned cats in the rain outside Schottenhamel with the other miserable b****ds . But not the place with the cross-bows, for some reason I always become a target ... also where is the best place to head to in town on Friday night?

Point 1) That just says hofbräu to me. There's thousands of degenerates in there so you should fit in nicely !! The pig pen is standing only so you don't have to worry about trying to find a table for 11. This is a good bet for Saterday and then try a more traditional tent on Sunday where there will be more chance of getting a table

Point 2) Beasts ??... Wrong festival, though you might find the odd horse !.. there again, some of the lasses I saw were not far off that !!

Point 3) Sunday will be busy, but quieter than Saterday because all the italians have fled !

Point 4) The Number of visitors to the fest will drop because the forcast is pants but the down side is that the demand on getting in the tents will go up drastically. Can become a real nightmare when it rains as the tents become mobbed.

Just my 10 cents worth - Opinions vary but get down there early on Saterday is a must

"Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope." Hologram of Konden appears to Potbelly...
Good man Potbelly, you sound like a man with a plan.

Is the reserved area a particular sectionor can is spread to cover the entire tent ?

Since we don't get in until Friday night can you recommend a suitable venue for starting off close enough to the Hauptbahnhof ? We'll be fresh from the airport and are unlike to cope well with additional superflous travel arrangements in the form of taxi or metro trips.

If you don't want to venture far, and there are 11 of you I think, exit Hauptbahnhof by the main entrance and head diagonally over to your right to a street called Schillerstr on which you'll easily find the Schiller Cafe. A dodgier den of iniquity you'll not stumble across. It's a sports bar (owner was a big boxing nut) of sorts and only closes for a couple of hours per day. Not a favourite of mine or even remotely liked but it'll do the job for a first arrival watering hole.

@Potbelly - write out satUrday 100 times!

If I remeber rightly from last year, pretty much all off the tables in the Schottenhammel were reserved apart from a small section in front of the band. Potbelly is definitely the man with the plan - go for the Hofbräu pig pen on the saturday for total carnage and then one of the other tents on the sunday for the real Oktoberfest experience.

Pig Pen is standing only so its good for mingling. You can pretty much always find elbow room on a table but it can be overcrowded early doors on a saturday and you can end up waiting a while for your beers. Last year was good weather so we went and got lashed up in a beergarden during the day, then headed for the 'pen about 7ish when a lot of the soft lads had called it a day and there was a bit more space and you didn't have to wait ages to get your beer. This time of night the main doors will probably be closed (as with all tents) so use the side doors.

As for pub around the Hauptbahnhof, the Bondi bar (link for it is usually in the top right corner of the screen) is usually a good bet if you want to get raucous.

Have fun gents!

The Schiller Cafe gets a real good write up, check it out.

"This bar is usually the first, and often the only, port of call for visiting football supporters arriving at Hauptbahnhof. It's open for about 20 hours of the day so the truly desperate can always get a pint. From what I've seen there it's mostly a hangout for hookers and dropouts. As I don't really fall into either category I stay away from the place as much as possible"

I reckon we're sorted!!!
