I've been listening to the radio today and there's an interesting report by Antenne Bayern regarding hygiene conditions at the Oktoberfest.
After conducting a study to determine whether the proper hygiene rules are been followed when handling beer glasses, food and cutlery the results are a bit surprising. 37% of a total of 35 tests on 8 different tents showed bacterial contamination.
Two thirds of the tested fish products sold at the Wies'n were contaminated with bacteria, 2 out of 10 beer glasses as well and the bacterial count on the cutlery available on the tables was three times higher than what is accepted.
According to what is reported by Antenne Bayern there are only 6 to 8 health inspectors to supervise the hygiene regulations throughout the duration of the festival.

Uh, bacteria are everywhere. "Sterile" only exists in a laboratory set up for that. The types of bacteria found would be far more interesting. Very few are actually dangerous. All in all, I would be more worried about the virally infected visitors.

Wouldn't be surprised a bit if everyone's colds and coughs at this time of year are being passed around at The Wies'n. I would be more surprised if they weren't .

The wiesn cold comes from getting trashed and walking around in just a shirt in the middle of the night after sweating your bum of for two hours dancings and going "la la la la la la la". That an them zgereister bringing foriegn germs in. I would get to worried about anything else, germs are good for us, we live to clean most of the time anyway.

You do not get a "cold" from just being cold, this is some kind of old wives tale from 400 years ago. Although being cold might make you more susceptible to getting a cold, these days it is very rarely the case that it has any influence at all. Your second guess is however pretty spot on, along with your last sentence too..

Ditto.
Think about this: How many people who serve you wash their hands before they serve or prepare the food for you. Some people have no habit of washing their hands after using the bathroom.

Men never pay attention to whether the house is clean or not. They pay attention to if the dinner is ready, if some exciting football game is on, if cold beer is in the fridge and that juicy sex is available as dessert.

noooooooooooooo. and santa claus is real yeah? and the weisn is a volksfest? ;-)) 17 years of wiesn mate. Quiet aware of how and why a wiesn cold can happen. I've done it to myself more times than was necessary... I did mean though all the medical stuff about reduced resistance. Easier to blame bacteria on a glass than the fact you snogged a stranger at the back of the auggie tent...

This old chestnut again. Regretfully I had a run in with Showem on the "cold is a virus" thingie and lost. I found this link on the BBC actually (so shot myself in the foot basically)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/4433496.stmQUOTE
If your mother always warned you to wrap up warm to avoid catching a cold, it seems she may have had a point. Scientists say they have the first proof that there really is a link between getting cold and catching one.
Staff at the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff took 180 volunteers and asked half of them to keep their bare feet in icy water for 20 minutes.
They found 29% developed a cold within five days, compared with only 9% in the control group not exposed to a chill.
QUOTE
"If they become chilled, this causes a pronounced constriction of the blood vessels in the nose and shuts off the warm blood that supplies the white cells that fight infection.
"The reduced defences in the nose allow the virus to get stronger and common cold symptoms develop.
"Although the chilled subject believes they have 'caught a cold' what has, in fact, happened is that the dormant infection has taken hold."
Makes sense. When you get cold it does draw the blood away from extremities.
p.s. But aside from this showem is usually wrong about everything else, and I am usually right about everything else, so keep the faith.

No we pay attention to if the dinner is what we wanted. That the lady of the house understands how long the sports game lasts and does not insist on talking mumbo jumbo unrelated rubbish in the last five minutes of the second half/forth quarter/ninth innings/last over (have I missed anything), that not only is the beer cold but served without us asking or moving for it and that the sex that follows does not involve us having to do anything or move out of the tv chair or put down our beer.

A cat bite is about 10 times more bacteria-ridden than a dog-bite. A bite from a human is even 50 times more infectuous that a cat-bite. And never cut chilis and not wash your hands before going to the toilet.

What if you dipped your hands in bleach after chopping the chilis? I've had problems taking out my contact lenses after chili chopping. Now that's painful. Even having used gloves for the chopping -- I must've chopped through them.
