Moving to Germany next week, various advice needed

Telephone and Internet, car leasing, etc.

I'm moving to Germany next week for a 2 year job contract, well Crailsheim specifically. And I am looking for some advice getting settled.

If possible I would like to only get a mobile phone and an internet connection to start. I would prefer to not get a land telephone line as two phone numbers for one person seems like a waste. And I don't think I'm going to get TV right away either. That being the case which internet provider is best in the area I'm in, or is DT really the only option? Is it possible to bundle cellphone and internet service into one payment?

As for transportation what can I expect to pay to lease a car? As long as it isn't too expensive I think I would prefer that, otherwise buy a cheapo car and sell it before returning to Canada?

What's a good store for computer equipment, games and so forth. Something similar to a Best Buy? I've heard saturn.de is ok?

I'm sure I'll have more question by the end of the week...

Thanks in advance.

On phone and internet: Many of the major providers offer mobile phones along with an internet flatrate, e.g. "o2" and "Base". I suggest going with o2 as you can also choose a "home zone" in which you'll have landline rates for both making and receiving calls. E.g, I have o2's "Genion S" tariff, at 10 Euro/month, plus 25 Euro/month for 5 GB internet traffic, and I can then have my Laptop dial into the 'net using the phone via Bluetooth. However, make sure you get UMTS (3G) reception in your area, or you won't get this internet rate with o2 there. It all can be ordered in a day, best to go to a o2 shop. See also: www.o2online.de (I hope you can read some German, at least?)

For TV, if you have a modern (fast) laptop with USB 2, get a DVB-T USB stick along with software (I recommend EyeTV if you have a Mac). That'll get you plenty of stations (about 20) for free.

Saturn-Hansa and Media Markt are kind of like Best Buy. Usually some big stuff is cheap, and all the add-ons are rather expensive (e.g, cheap Computers, but then the adapters, cables etc. are costlier than elsewhere).
