I'm from Los Angeles and soon to take a 1-2 year assignment in Frankfurt. Where should I live? I'll be working for Lufthansa Airlines so HELP! What's Frankfurt life like? Should I live in the city or outskirts? I'll of course have a car.

I'll of course have a car.

Of course!

Beyond suggesting that life could be easier and cheaper without a car, I can't really help too much. Good luck with the move.

Try Kelsterbach ... conveniently close to both Frankfurt and its Airport

If you are single, I'm not sure if it's so much fun to live in the outskirts. Not much going on. In Frankfurt, Bornheim, Nordend, Bockenheim, Sachsenhausen, Westend are nice areas; flats in Westend and parts of Sachsenhausen being pricey though. You could also have a look at the city of Mainz, on the river Rhein west of the Airport.

Assume you'll be at the Flughafen. Since you didn't mention family, assume you'lll be alone. I couldn't recommend the towns in the immediate vicinity of the Flughafen like Raunheim, Kelsterbach, Mörfelden, etc. For one, they're very noisy due to the Airport and don't have much to offer otherwise. A big consideratiion is whether you really want to drive or take the S-Bahn. The train is good if you're a downtown kind of person. Taking a car will give you more flexibility to live outside the city if you are more of a countryside person.
Anywhere in central Mainz or Frankfurt and you'd have maybe a 30-35 minute commute with the S-Bahn. It can be easily more than that with a car. If you do shift work though, then the train is problematic.

Back in the day, I lived in Sachsenhausen and got the 61 bus to Terminal 1 then got onto the LH Shuttle which goes directly to each building and as you'll get your transport costs probably paid (JobTicket plus cheap car rentals when needed), you might want to think about whether you need a car. Parking is also horrific in FFM and apartments don't generally come with car lots.
But I was Systems, not Passage.
Sachsenhausen has great transport links (train, bus, close to motorway), a decent big supermarket, running routes, plus some pretty good bars nearby. You can also get to other parts of the city relatively easily.
One downside: it can be an LH Ghetto precisely because it is so handy (but the local gyms etc also offer discounts if you show that badge). Bornheim & Nordend also popular with Lufthanseaten.
Don't forget to use the LH Intranet, it's a goldmine of local info!

Schwanheim is near the airport but not on the flight path and quite quiet. It's next to the forrest and nr the river. public transport is limited (strassenbahn takes about 30 mins to the city, but maybe 10 to the s-bahn to get to the airport) or it's about a 5-10 min drive through the forrest to the airport.

not city but nice village feel. I recommend it, and may even have a 1 bed, 2 room apartment for rent. maybe,
