PigHoover
Hi,
I'm off to Oslo for 3 days next weekend with a friend. Has anyone any good tips on where to stay (which areas), what's worth a visit, what's to avoid, etc. etc. Any good bars, restaurants, shopping areas? Has anyone any experiences (good or bad) they care to share?

I really like the Munch Museum was a great introduction to his work, and you could really see his decent into madness. I also did a Fjord tour with a trip to one of the old museum villages, was really interesting to see.

I stayed at one of the Hostels- you can get a private or double room and its still cheaper than a hotel, was about a 30 min walk into town, nothing IMO.

Just be aware that things will be Expensive with a capital E. €6 for a beer etc.

I stayed in the Anker Hostel, which was pretty central and reasonably priced. I have to say that I think that Norway's main attraction is its countryside rather than its cities, but Oslo is still quite pleasant with a decent nightlife, if you can afford it. If you want to get out of the city for a day, the Olympic town of Lillehammer or the stave church in Heddal are worthwhile destinations. The fjords are a bit too far for a day trip really, although it can be done.

Frogner Park is a must! I can't believe how many sculptures Gustav Vigeland created. He really captured the essence of human interaction and human emotions.

Here are some pics I took:

Hi PigHoover, if you dont mind pretending to be me I can give you a letter from the Grand Hotel in Oslo that will entitle you to a VIP stay "free of charge" !! We stayed there a while ago and had such a cerap time I complained and was offered a free weekends accommodation. Like I say you would have to pretend to be me though :-)

I'm planning to go to Oslo for a weekend next month and I'd gladly jump on this (my SN even is pig-related--coincidence? I think not...). Don't you think they'd ask for ID though?
