Help choosing a phone and Internet plan

Advice for a newcomer in Munich

Handy Smurf
Hello all,

So, I will be coming to Munich for good in mid-October. My company has a relocation vendor that I‘ve been working with, and I’ve already found a nice apartment in Schwabing (right by the BP gas station, two blocks away from the Karstadt department store). So, I am very excited!

I have a topic that I could use some help with. First, the re-lo vendor is asking me to choose a phone and internet plan. Here is the option I am thinking to take:

Call and Surf "Comfort"
* 44,95 Euro/month (phone and Internet)
* 59,95 Euro once for installation
* Calling Flatrate to German land line numbers
* DSL-flat with DSL 6000 installation.
* 3,94 calling-flatrate to all neighbour states of Germany and to USA, Canada and Australia, Great Britain, Ireland etc

So, my questions are:

1. Is this the best option for the highest-speed internet possible, plus the ability to call the U.S.?
2. Are there pitfalls & catches to this plan that I should be aware of?

I have read on this board a lot of information on Deutsche Telekom, which is all a little bit daunting. If anyone can comment on whether this is the best deal or if I should ask for something else, that would be really helpful. Thanks to all!

1. This is not the cheapest option to Call US and Europe. You can use VoIP providers (with quality as good as a fixed line) to call US for less than 1ct/min.
2. How long will you be in Germany? Call and Surf "Comfort" package comes with a 24 month minimum contract period, and cancellation in between can be a issue.

If you go with a provider like Alice , for the same monthly charge, you get 16Mbps, with no activation fees and no minimum contract period. Disadvantage - you cannot use cheap "call by call" prefixes. But this is not a issue if you use VoIP effectively.

you can use prefix numbers to dial anywhere in the world for less than a cent a minute so need even for Voip equipment or contracts.

Much though I hate to turn my long established table. but slowly, the Telekom Call&Surf deal is becoming a good one. This is one of the few providers where you can get a line up and working within a week or so, have a reasonable one-time connection fee of €49.95, subsidised hardware (modem/router/WLAN/VoIP for €30) and from today flatrate calls to most European countries, USA Canada and Australia for €3.95. You might shave a few cents a month off using VoIP or call-by-call, but both add a level of hassle, technical know-how, and sometimes dodgy quality. While still not as good as many may like, their customer service is the best of a bad lot, and they commit to fixing a fault in one working day (as other providers rely on Telekom to fix faults they can't make this commitment) The main downside is the 24 month minimum commitment.
€34.95/month provides a passable 2Mbit flatrate internet connection, analogue phone line, 120 minutes included to German landlines, plus €3.95 to extend it to flatrate international calling. Again, you may save a couple of €€ a month on the connection, but I doubt you'll get it so quickly and keep it working so reliably.

Having now had to eat them my words don't taste so bad after all.

The one thing I've found sinch switching to T-Mobile, is that their sales staff (or the company the hire) keep calling
both the mobile and home # trying to get me to sign-up for more services I don't need. Sometimes they call 2-3 times a day
for 3-4 days straight, usually at the same times and the caller ID always shows as "Unknown".

I've told them to stop calling and to remove me from their list, but they keep calling..

@YL6
You know of any secret direct contacts/ways of making them stop once and for all?

It's almost certainly not T-Mobile (or Telekom) calling you, but a marketing partner. Next time they call ask them for your customer number or the charges on the last invoice - they can't tell you. Most likely you checked (or did not check) the box preventing your number being passed on to third parties...

Well, they know I signed with T-Mobile, Know what plans I have and phone I have. They had to get this info. directly from T-Mobile.
