Absolutely! Everyone is welcome.

For the newcomers: Salamas is a small place. There is a small room adjacent to the bar, in the back. That's where most of the football people will be, watching the projection screen. But Mr. Salama usually has football on all the TVs in the place.

And beer is cheap there! Can't remember exactly, but cheap for Berlin, which is cheap anyway. That's one reason why we keep going back.

See you all tonight!
Ami in Berlin
Alright. Sorry for pussing out last night. I had a 12 hour beer marathon on Saturday that ranged from watching soccer in mitte to seeing a friend play Celtic music in Kreuzberg to gay disco in Schöneberg. Consequently, my head was in no shape to venture out on Sunday.

What makes this all worse is they my home internet has been down since Thursday, so I couldn't even see the game at home. Biggest game of the season, and it looks like it was a good one, and there I was lying in bed with a jug of water and a sack full of asprine.

Oh well, I hope all had fun and someone said hi to Mr. Salama for me. Next week, hopefully.
ronk
Yeah, it's too bad that you missed it. It was a packed house at Salamas last night. A good time, as usual.

Hope you feel better. No backing out next week - that goes for you too, Roman smile.gif
Ami in Berlin
It's a pretty tasty line-up next weekend. And for once: no Jets and no Pats (bye weeks?). Seahawks are on Monday night in a rematch of their snowbowl last season against the 49ers. Too late for me, though. Same schedule on both NASN and Sky.

19.00: Vikings-Packers
22.00: Cowboys-Giants
02:00: Don't remember. Don't care.
ronk
Finally! An early Packers game! The second game looks pretty good as well.

I'll cast my vote early for Salamas. There seems to be a good crowd of people that really care about football and are there every week, and they're not all Americans which makes it more interesting. Also, there are no backpacker kids that sit right in front of the big screen but spend most of the time staring at their laptop like one of the other football venues in town.
nw2berlin
I'm definitely down for Salama's again. It was our first time and it was pretty kick ass. Good football crowd, and quite a few locals too. Salama seemed liked a good host too, which makes me want to return.
phoenix-rose
I have to work, but will do my best to be there and wear my Wisconsin shirt. Sorry I've not been around the last few weekends guys!

Go Packers!
Ami in Berlin
Mr Salama? Good host? He's the raddest man in Berlin, as far as I can tell.

I've got a party to go to Saturday, but I'll try to keep my consumption to a minimum so I'm fit for Sunday. Maybe I'll make some more guac and salsa.

PS. The Emeral Isle has closed, so that's off the list for our anyway only theoretical rotation policy.

If you wear yours I'll wear mine. I don't have any Packers stuff, but a big red Wisconsin sweatshirt should show my spirit. It's a bit obnoxious in it's redness, so it rarely makes it into my regular roatation wink.gif

Mmmmm, guac and salsa
phoenix-rose
*laughs* Ronk, obnoxious in its redness? Honey, have you SEEN my red coats? Have you see my red shirts? It's my favorite color.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING can be obnoxious if it's red. :-D
phoenix-rose
Bump - Salimas tonight guys?
Ami in Berlin
I'll be there
ronk
Me too.

This weeks schedule on NASN:

Saturday 17 November - College Football
6PM - Ohio State vs Michigan
9:30PM - Penn State vs Michigan State

Sunday 18 November - NFL
7PM - NY Giants vs Detroit
10PM - Washington vs Dallas
2AM - New England vs Buffalo

Of course, I know that everyone will be at Salamas on Sunday night. Looks like we have some decent games again this week. Anyone interested in catching some college football the night before? The Ohio State - Michigan game at least could be interesting. I'm sure that if we showed up at Salamas on Saturday night he would put the game on for us. Alternatively, we could go to Belushi's.
Ami in Berlin
Once my head has recovered in a couple days I'll let you know. I ended up walking all the way home last night (took about 40 minutes) after Salama decided to give me some free schnapps.

It seems the Pats and Jets have been replaced by the Giants and Cowboys as NASN's favorite teams.

The Ohio State-Michigan game could be fun, but it's on at the same time as the Scotland-England soccer match.
ronk
Ouch, that hurts. But free schnapps, that's good. Sorry I missed that.

About the college games, I don't think I'll be watching them. I forgot that I made other plans. I'll still be at Salamas on Sunday though.
J n Berlin
Last Sunday was a good time, Monday morning was a bit rough...but was worth it.

I'm up to see my Cowboys play on Sunday. Not sure about Saturday yet, but will keep it in mind. Would be fun also to see the futbol game (England/Scotland).

Jason
Ami in Berlin
I'll be watching the soccer on Saturday, venue still to be determined.

Sunday's up in the air. Pretty much has everything to do with how much beer gets drunk on Saturday and what state my head is in on Sunday.

Next Topic:
Thanksgiving. There's football, of course. But for once I'm going to say that maybe Salama's isn't the best venue. Food, you see. Last year I went to the Ceili House in Wilmersdorf, and it was good (game on the big screen, good food). I can recommend that again, but of course it's on the wrong side of Berlin for most people (it's close to my work at least). The Emerald Isle would have been ideal, but they've closed. Any thoughts on the matter?
ronk
I'd be up for the Ceili House. Sounds like a nice place and food is definitely a must for the Thanksgiving games.

What kind of food are we talking about? Is it pub food, or something a bit better?
Ami in Berlin
It's pub food, but I'd rate it higher than what you get at Belushi's. I've had fish and chips and burgers there, both of which were good. I'm afraid roast turkey isn't on the menu this year.
Monchick
They probably won't put on football anywhere Saturday because that is one of the biggest European Cup soccer days of the year. Such a dilemma...watch Italy getting creamed playing "football" or watching the Wolverines beat their nemisis...such decisions.
ronk
You're so sure about Michigan winning? I'll take that bet.

This another game in which I'd love to see both teams lose. That never seems to happen though.
Ami in Berlin
Look at it this way. The team the wins still kind of losses, as they will have won the Conference and the chance to go get creamed in a BSC bowl. I'll be rooting for Michigan, just to make a mockery of the whole BCS thing.

As for any place showing it, I'm guessing your only hope is a single screen off in the corner at Belushi's, or if Salama comes through. What makes me think that Salama's may work is that there is pretty much zero chance of any Scots or Italians being there. Any of the other usual haunts will be full of them. Germany plays at 20.00, though, which might mean you only get 2 hours of college football even at Salama's.

Anyway, as I've already said, I'll be watching the Italian embarrass themselves.
Monchick
I don't know if Italy will lose, but we might get to see a riot live. I hope to enjoy my Saturday alternating between real and fake football (that is, watching the Germany and Italy games) and then returning to real football. Where would be a good place where I could do this?
ronk
I think Belushi's is your best bet. Although a TV with real (American) football may be a tall order on a night packed with so much soccer.
Ami in Berlin
The Germany game is on after the Italy game, so no need to alternate.

As for venues, the usual suspects.
Oscar Wilde will be packed. I hate the place. I mean really, really hate it. But I'll probably end up there since the Emerald Isle has closed and that's where most of my friends are likely to be. It will be full of Scots, and so very entertaining.
Irish Harp in Charlottenburg and Ceili House in Wilmersdorf are options, but on the wrong side of the city, alas.
That pretty much exhausts the list of footy bars.

Don't know, still have to confer with some people to sort out plans, but I suspect I'll be found cursing having to pay €3.40 for a half liter of Berliner at the Oscars. Unless the game is on ARD or ZDF. Got to check that.

EDIT: Yep. It's on ZDF. That means the beer can be a lot cheap at home.
Ami in Berlin
Not sure, but I may skip out this week.

I'm trying to hatch a plan to get myself to the mountains, strap two pieces of fiberglass on my feet, and go for a long walk. So far this seems to involve getting up at 5:30 and talking a long and/or expensive train and/or bus ride, but I'd like to see the snow before it melts.

I'm sure I'll end up sleeping in, so maybe I'm on for football after all.
Ami in Berlin
Goddamn Italians. I will never understand how that was a free kick to Italy.

Anyway, I've got my shit packed and it looks like I'm getting up at 'what-the-fuck-o'clock' to go skiing tomorrow, so unless I oversleep I won't be there for football.

Thanksgiving on Thursday, though.
ronk
Have fun skiing.

So, about Thanksgiving...here's the schedule:

Thursday 22 November
6:30PM Green Bay vs. Detroit
10:00PM NY Jets vs. Dallas

Friday 23 November
2:00AM Indianapolis vs. Atlanta

I think I may have plans for dinner, but hopefully it will be an early dinner so that I don't miss the Green Bay game. Was the consensus to go to the Ceili House instead of Salamas?
J n Berlin
I'm up for Thursday. Salamans is fine as we can bring food in. I figure I can get a turkey sandwhich somewhere.

J
vincecanada
I may be in for the Green Bay vs. God's Team matchup. Where are you watching?
Ami in Berlin
I'm going to equivocate on the location. With work in the morning, I'm only coming for the first game anyway.

Miss the Green Bay game ronk? Blasphemy.
Ami in Berlin
With a long weekend ahead of me, I had to skip out last night. Watched online though.

Can't wait for next week's showdown of 10-1 teams, not that we'll be able to see it.

The games on Sunday aren't that attractive:
Vikings-Giants
Ravens-Chargers

If I'm not too hung over from Karaoke on Saturday I'll come down, but it looks fairly doubtful.
Ami in Berlin
Not a bad lineup this week:
For those awake at 2:00 am Friday morning (not me, just to be clear), the battle of 10-1 NFC teams. Thank you NFL Network for screwing just about eveyone here.

On Sunday we have:
19:00 Jacksonville v. Indy. I think this could be a surprisingly good game.
22:00 Giants v. Bears. Maybe not a classic, but two reasonably well matched teams.

That's the NASN schedule. Sky has Cleveland v Arizona as the late game, which is kind of a dog.

Same bat-time? Same bat-channel?
Monchick
The Colts game will be interesting. I'm more interested in tomorrow night's game however. We need a reasonable team for my PATs to destroy if I am going to pull an all-nighter in February.
Ami in Berlin
"Thanks Eli, this game is over, I'm going home." That's what I said after he threw a pick in the endzone late in the third quarter. Great, I thought. I can actually get home for once without wandering around looking for a night bus and ending up walking for 45 minutes in the rain, snow, whatever. The Giants are going nowhere, so I'm going home.

So I just got home, easily for once I add, and I've turned on the game online just as the Giants pull out the win. That'll teach me. Never again, Salama, never again shall I leave you early. S-Bahn be damned, I will walk from now on.

Anyway, it was a skeleton crew tonight at Salamas. The Jags gave Indy a damn good game. The Giants-Bears game was awful, at least until I left. Then it seems it got good.

Oh well, off to bed.
ronk
I missed Salama's last night, but with the parents still in town and the fact that I'm taking a couple of days off from football, I couldn't make it.

No worries, I'll probably be back on board next week, but for now, I'm still nursing my wounds from the Packer game and watching more football could aggravate them, especially with the pundits proclaiming that Tony Romo is the new QB-King of the NFC. Did we really see anything special from him or do we just need sensationalism to keep the ratings up? I suppose that teams outside of New England and Dallas should just stop playing now, if we believe the talking heads. In fact, let's just have the Superbowl next week and get it over with, right? OK, enough cynicism. I'll watch next week. I can't stay away for too long.
winterfeld
Sun 9 Dec
19:00 Live Dallas vs Detroit
22:00 Live Pittsburgh vs New England (!!)
02:00 Live Indianapolis vs Baltimore

Mon 10 Dec

02:30 Live New Orleans vs Atlanta
Monchick
Wow. Someone actually put an explanation point next to my Pats. Believe it or not, I'm more interested in watching the Lions/Cowboys game before. It's a given we're in the Superbowl, but I think playing Dallas would be incredibly predictable.
vincecanada
A "given"?

"That's why they play the games..."

<- Colts fan.
jtw
So this week the Fins have a chance to prevent the Pats from duplicating their undefeated season. Who's around for it?

NASN's full Sunday Night slate:

20:00 Giants at Bills
23:00 Dolphins at Patriots
03:00 Redskins at Vikings

I've been to one NFL night this year, so I'll live the Belushi's/Salamas decision up to the regulars.
Ami in Berlin
I'm off until the playoffs. I know a few of the other Salama's regulars are away too, but there should be a couple people down there at least.

FYI. Are those times correct? If so, that's one hour later than usual.
jtw

FYI. Are those times correct? If so, that's one hour later than usual.

I added one hour to the times on the NASN website to go from GMT to CET. But maybe I'm wrong, since for example 16:00 EST + 6 = 22:00 CET.
Wiley
i haven't been to any of the games yet...but will on sunday. has anyone decided where?
jtw
Yes, I did get the times wrong (for some reason I was thinking NASN's schedule was in GMT rather than CET) so it's actually

19:00 Giants at Bills
22:00 Dolphins at Patriots
02:00 Redskins at Vikings

There's some thought of going to The Bird this week.
jtw
So it seems to be Belushi's in the end.
nw2berlin
Does anyone know the lineup of this week's games? I'll be heading to Salama's as usual. My pops is in town and I want to show him some NFL.
winterfeld
I know .. (NASN)

Sun 30 Dec

22:00 Live Dallas vs Washington - NFL
