After a few hiccups at Belushi's, Salama's came through big last night. Given the unreliability of Belushi's and the hospitality of Salama's, I propose that this become the new regular venue.

Next week's lineup has the Chargers and Packers in the first game and the Bengals and Seahawks (!!!) in the second match. Big projection screen, good sound, cheap drinks, not smokey: be there or be square.
HankdaTank
What time would those games start? I'm thinking about making American football the sport that I watch and keep track of.
L8knight
Well should be 7pm and 10:15pm, but I could be wrong since I get those times from watching the Bears games each weekend from the Central time zone.
ronk
Of course, the week that I can't make it is when they play the Packer game. Rose, you'll have to cheer twice as loud!

I'll be in the US for the weekend. So, I'll still be watching and I'll be a little closer to the action!

Have fun! I'll see you guys the following week.
phoenix-rose
I'll do my best with cheering the Packers... However, you'll have to help me cheer on baseball some eve.

I'll be there sunday, of course - for at least the first game. (I can't stay out all night again - I have to work Monday.)

~Rose
ronk
OK, sounds like a plan. What's on the baseball schedule next week? I have to admit, when it comes b-ball, if it doesn't directly affect the Brewers (these days that leaves just Cubs and Brewers games) I'm indifferent. Although I do have negative feelings for the Yankees...

Next week Wed or Thur would be great because I'm finally done with language courses then!
ronk
Oh, and to answer the earlier question: The early game starts at 7PM, the late game starts at 10PM (those are Berlin times)
phoenix-rose
Re Baseball -

Thur 20 Sept
21:00 L.A. Dodgers vs Colorado - MLB
Russell Martin and the Dodgers head to Coors Field looking for a road win against their NL West rivals, Matt Holliday and the Rockies.

Otherwise... (don't kill me since you'll be stateside):

Fri 21 Sept
01:00 Milwaukee vs Atlanta - MLB
Prince Fielder will be hoping to slug the Brewers to victory at Turner Field against Mark Teixeira and the Braves in this meeting of two top NL teams.

Looks like I get to Cheer on the Packers and the Braves by myself!! LOL!! Too bad you don't get to be here Friday so I can totally rag on the Brewers ;-) and have someone who would take offense! (Gotta support my home team after all!)

Hi Guys,

Sorry to those who came on Sunday 16th for NFL unsure.gif Belushi's Bar NASN is back and running and will have all baseball and NFL on this week...

Roman_from_Toronto
So..where tomorrow? How many are coming?
Ami in Berlin
I'll echo Roman's question. My preference is Salama's, but if the consensus is Belushi's I'll conform to it. I'm actually not 100% sure that I'll make it as we have had a death in the family this week, but I think I'll probably be ready for some diversion by Sunday night.

If I hear nothing else I'll plan on going to Salama's. Is there is groundswell in the other direction?

Go Hawks.
phoenix-rose
post says salimas, and thats where i'm figuring since I've got a big day starting with 11 am brunch and on to hockey before heading out. Ami/ Roman I'm PMing you my handy number in case it gets changed. SMS me if it does. Otherwise, I'll see you at Salima's for the first game.

According to NASN, the schedule is as follows:

Sun 23 Sept
19:00
Live San Diego vs Green Bay - NFL wub.gif
Philip Rivers and the Chargers go head with head with Brett Favre and the Packers at Lambeau Field in this Week 3 meeting of NFL rivals.

Sun 23 Sept
22:00
Live Cincinnati vs Seattle - NFL
Carson Palmer leads the Bengals into action at Qwest Field, the home of Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawks in this NFL head to head.

Sun 23 Sept
02:00
Live Dallas vs Chicago - NFL
Two of the NFL's most high-profile teams face off at Soldier Field as Tony Romo and the Cowboys go in search of a road win against Rex Grossman and the Bears.
GoodGrief
Apparently Salamas will be a wash out tonight as no one is going.
Ami in Berlin
I couldn't make it in the end. Concert next week. In two weeks, I guess.
Roman_from_Toronto
Are there any plans for this Sunday?
I'd like to get out for a game tomorrow.
ronk
Hi Roman,
There are a few of us that are going to a concert on Sunday evening. I know, what were they thinking scheduling during football? Oh well, what can you do? I don't think it's the entire regular football crowd, so maybe someone else is still planning to do football? In any case, after a two-week hiatus, I will be back in the football crowd for next Sunday's game(s). Cheers.
snsmith83
Hi,

Does anyone know where we can watch the Houston Atlanta game tomorrow evening at 7? I know that NASN isn't carrying it... does that make it impossible to see here? Would anyone know if NFL games can be viewed on the internet somehow?

Shannon
vincecanada
I believe Sunday Ticket and NFL GamePass have online options.

Houston and Atlanta? Really?
Ami in Berlin
The only way other than NASN that a pub might have an NFL game on is if they have sky. Belushi's, Ceili House, Emerald Isle, Oscar Wilde, Irish Harp and Kilkenny all do. The question then is if they actually put the game on for you. The order in which I have listed

The only way other than NASN that a pub might have an NFL game on is if they have sky. Belushi's, Ceili House, Emerald Isle, Oscar Wilde, Irish Harp and Kilkenny all do. The question then is if they actually put the game on for you. The order in which I have listed those places is the order of likelihood of which I think they would show it. A call ahead of time is advised in any case. Be prepared that even if the Oscar Wilde tells you they will show it, they will probably switch over to Spanish soccer after about 20 minutes. They've lied to me on several occasions.

So the the question then is if Sky is showing a game other than what NASN is. I have no idea how often they show the same or different games. You can check the schedule here: http://www.skysports.com/ . They are not showing Houston-Atlanta, by the way.

Finally, check your PM for other methods.
Ami in Berlin
Sorry for the double post, my internet is being weird tonight.

PS, I'll be at the concert on Sunday, so no NFL for me. I'm looking forward to getting back to it next week, though.
phoenix-rose
Sounds great to me. Meanwhile...

hey ROMAN - (In case you didn't see...)

wub.gif

Brett Favre threw two touchdown passes last night to break Dan Marino's all time record of 420. The 37-year-old Packers QB has now connected with 422, with Green Bay improving to 4-0 after a a 23-16 win over Minnesota.

GO PACKERS!!! wub.gif
ronk
GO PACKERS! Brett Favre is god. Which makes Marino a demigod - nothing to be ashamed of.

OK, on tap this week on NASN:

7PM: NY Jets vs NY Giants *yawn*
10PM: Indianapolis vs Tampa Bay *zzzzzzz*
2AM: Green Bay vs Chicago (I really shouldn't stay up and watch this but...)

So, where are we meeting?
Roman_from_Toronto
GGGGGRRRRRRRRR

Why doesn't the old man just stop...it has nothing to do with football anymore!
Just glory, glory and more glory. At least Marino had some class and knew when to leave, not when records were broken but simply when he knew the time was right.

I wish Marino would come out of retirement and suit up...the Dolphins really really really need some help and leadership! (but then Dan was never in it for the records...they just happened)

Don't hate me now...hahahaha

Um...plans?
Roman_from_Toronto
Actually, now that I think about it, it doesn't matter...Manning will probably wipe us both out :-(
vincecanada
Dan never was a classy guy, in my view. He just looked like a jerk, always ragging on his teammates for dropping balls, etc.. Dan needed some more Isotoner gloves.

And he's still lived about always falling short - I think Boomer gave him a shot last year in the pregame shows, comparing pre-Super Bowl Peyton Manning to Dan Marino, and he shot daggers with his eyes at him. I thought he was going to go across the table at him.

Anywhere showing baseball round 1?

Mmm. Football. Sound good for Sunday. I'll make a pitch for Salama's.

Better atmosphere. Projection screen and surround sound. Friendly, locally run establishment. I know there are travel issues for some people. If these are insurmountable then we can do it at Belushi's.

Are there any opinions on the matter?
Roman_from_Toronto
This time of the year is insane. NFL, NHL and MLB Playoffs. Just not enough time to catch it all.
The only problem with Salamas is the food issue. Do we and can we bring something? Order pizza or run to Burger King? Snacks or does everyone bring a little something?
I did like Belushis because of the overall atmosphere but I have to admit that Salamas had that private feel and the screen was awesome.
If I come it will only be for game 1, can't be so wiped out on Monday again.
Lets decide and see how many are interested.
ronk
I have a slight preference for Belushi's because it is closer to me - and I like food too. However, this is not enough for me to cast a vote either way. I will come no matter where the group decides to go.

So I will remain, annoyingly, neutral on this one.
Ami in Berlin
The general rule in Berlin is that if a bar does not sell its own food, you may bring food from outside. I've seen this, and done this, countless times. Also, Salama's looks like about the last place in town that is going to have a problem with this. I don't think it's an issue.

I could make some homemade fresh salsa and guacamole if that helped to shift any opinions.
jtw
The next time I go to Salamas I plan to bring a Call-a-Pizza menu.

However, that will not be this weekend.
phoenix-rose
I'm game for wherever on sunday. Hopefully it'll be a migraine free day. My preference is Belushi's (because it's easy for me to get to) but Salimas is fine too - just means I have to plan for it AND leave after the first game is done (or I'm stuck in the city all night.)

~Rose
Ami in Berlin
Regarding transport, the U5 runs until 00:38, after which the N5 night bus runs throughout the night along the same route, taking 9 minutes to reach Alex rather than 7 with the U-Bahn. The night bus continues on to Hackischer Markt, as well. www.bvg.de

If you're like me and you take the Ring S-Bahn, the last one leaves Frankfurter Alle at 1:08.

With a little forward planning to make the underground/train/bus at the right time, transport isn't all that bad, really.

So I'll plan on Salama's and have chips with salsa and guac in tow. What are we looking at for numbers? ronk, rose, roman, myself+one or two (I have some curious Germans who live around the corner from there wanting to come). Anyone else?
ronk
OK, Salamas it is. I'm looking forward to the guac!
phoenix-rose
since I'm not sure this week's games got posted:

19:00 Live NY Jets vs NY Giants - NFL
Bragging rights in the Big Apple are up for grabs in this Week 5 head to head as Chad Pennington and the Jets take on Eli Manning and the Giants.

22:00 Live Tampa Bay vs Indianapolis - NFL

Jeff Garcia and the Buccaneers are on the road in the RCA Dome against the reigning Super Bowl champions, Peyton Manning and the Colts.

02:00 Live Chicago vs Green Bay - NFL

NFC North rivals go head to head at Lambeau Field as Rex Grossman and the Bears take on Brett Favre and the Packers.
Thorin
I'll be there for the NY game at 19:00. Ronk.. I'm the guy that tried to catch the Decemberists with you a few weeks back.

Also, there's another bar that shows American Football (The Ceili House). It's probably out of everyone's way since it's in my neck of the woods near Ludwigkirchplatz in Wilmersdorf. But, thought I'd throw it out there for future consideration.
Ami in Berlin
Good God does my head hurt today.

Jäger: bad.
Having to go trek to find a cash machine because you can't pay your bill: bad.
Being too drunk to find the night bus stop: very, very bad.

How did the Packers game turn out?
ronk
Yeah, I was a bit fragile this morning as well. Quite a night!

I think we stayed through the first half of the Packer game, and I seem to recall that they were doing well and had a good lead. Now I see that they ended up losing. Oh well.

Ami: that sucks that you couldn't find the bus stop, I trust that you got home OK though (or at least relatively OK).

Well, give the old liver a rest until next week - same time, same place
ronk
OK, this Sunday's games are:

7:00PM - Philadelphia Eagles vs NY Jets

10:00PM - New England Patriots vs Dallas Cowboys

2:00AM - New Orleans Saints vs Seattle Seahawks

I suggest Salama's again, but I'm open to other suggestions. Belushi's is nice as well and I'm told that there are other places showing football on Sundays. So, chime in with your vote.

The big question is, will there be guacamole and salsa again this week?
Ami in Berlin
Why do they do this to me?

Seahawks as the late game?
The game of the season thus far as the 10:00 game?
And the early game is the Jets, again. Do they show the Jets every week?

Reverse that order and I'd be a lot happier.

Anyway, I can't stay as late as last week. My preference of venue is probably well-known at this point, but I'll cede to the will of the majority, especially since I'll be making it an early night. Guac? Maybe, but no promises this week. And under absolutely no circumstances will I be drinking Jäger shots again.
Sandgroperin
D and I won't make it this Sunday so you are safe from the Jaeger shots.
phoenix-rose
Sorry I didn't make last week - they are doing crazy things with the transportation out my way. I didn't make it to brunch either (GERR!).

Anyhow, I'm figuring on attempting this on Sunday - and will keep the eyes peeled for where.

~Rose
L8knight
What game is being shown at 7pm? The Bears play the Vikings at Noon (7pm German time), will you be putting that up?
phoenix-rose
It's NASN, so it's up to them to decide what they play - we're sort of at their mercy.

Repost of Ronk's earlier:

7:00PM - Philadelphia Eagles vs NY Jets

10:00PM - New England Patriots vs Dallas Cowboys

2:00AM - New Orleans Saints vs Seattle Seahawks
aussiefox73
Hi Ronk,

This week we have the following games on at belushi's ( www.belushis.com) Rosa-luxemburg-str 39-41 berlin 10178

Sunday
19:00 Tampa Bay v Tennessee
22:00 Dallaas v New England GO COWBOYS !!! rolleyes.gif
2am Seattle v New Orleans
Chris
P.S if the game isn't on any of the TV's then please ask one of the staff to put it on one of the TV's... Please realize also that on Sunday night is also the rugby Semi-Final so that will be on as well... It will be very busy.
ronk
OK, well, football watchers of Berlin: What do you think?

Belushi's or Salama's? The early game is different at each place, both have the cowboys game, both may be crowded (Salama's was last week at least). Belushi's has food as has been mentioned before.

Some of us were talking last week about the possibility of having rotating venues for watching football. Belushi's and Salama's would be in the rotation of course, and there's a place out to the west somewhere as well - don't remember name or place though.

I think my vote would be for Salama's again this week and then we can set up a rotation after that.
Ami in Berlin
The venue in the west is Ceili House in Wilmersdorf. It's cool and the food is good. Others have reported that the Emerald Isle in Kreuzberg will show NFL also. I haven't been there for NFL, but it is a cool place and has really good food, including a Sunday roast special. I'm only sceptical because I know they have Bingo on Sunday nights, and that brings in a pretty large audience (I know, hard to believe). I'd say we should call ahead before deciding to go there.

A rotating schedule is probably the fairest way to do this. It looks like we have three, maybe four options that are in different parts of the city.

The issue this week is the Rugby World Cup semifinal at 21:00. This will most likely dominate proceedings everywhere other than Salama's. Even if Belushi's (or one of the others) puts the NFL on one TV, the sound won't be good and we'll be crowded out by the people there to watch rugby.

So it looks like I'm seconding ronk's proposal to go to Salama's this week and then start the rotation. Anyone else have thoughts?
phoenix-rose
Salimas is good for me. Do we want to order food, or each bring "munchies?"
vincecanada
Might be able to make the early game this week.

On a side note, anyone else flying up to London in 2 weeks for the NYG-MIA game?
