Audience reaction to BeMe Theatre's production of "I, Claudia"

"10 out of 10. That was some of the most magnificent acting I have ever seen. Such a strong talent.
My only gripe was that lights went up too soon. I wanted to applaud forever.
"

"Graceful, light-touch, intelligent, charming Elisa!! Balanced, thoughtful direction. Best show I’ve seen in ages. Deft and beautiful.
(P.S. I’m also a trained actor so I’m a really tough critic!)
"

"Rating of show: 11 out of 10. Acting is superb! Thank you!"

I, Claudia follows the precocious 12-year-old Claudia as she finds refuge from her parents’ recent divorce in the basement of her school. As she opens up her vulnerable “pre-teen psyche to the audience, she relates her experiences, both hilarious and heartfelt. The character revealed is, like many girls of her age, funny, intelligent and wounded by the numerous pitfalls that populate the difficult journey of discovery to adulthood. Along the way we meet her absent-minded grandfather Douglas, who wouldn’t mind taking another spin around the block; her father’s new fiancée Leslie, who wants everything just perrrrrfect for her wedding day; and the immigrant school caretaker Drachman, former artistic director of the National Theatre of Bulgonia. A solo actress plays all four characters in mask in this delightfully funny and poignant play. Written by award-winning playwright Kristen Thomson and directed by award-winning director Paul Lampert, veteran actress Elisa Moolecherry deftly takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

"Kristen Thomson’s portrait of a wonderfully winsome young woman trembling on the cusp of adolescence is one of the freshest things to hit the stage in many a season... I, Claudia is blissfully funny and unexpectedly touching."
– Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star

"Thomson blends the humorous and the painful in a single sentence and she’s adept at shifting us from raucous laughter to pin-drop stillness. Thomson’s rich characters grow in performance, painted through voices and physical and verbal rhythms."
– Jon Kaplan, NOW

Kristen Thomson won Toronto Theatre Dora Awards for her first play, the one-woman show, I, Claudia, which she created through improvisation with mask and then presented at the Tarragon Theatre, Belfry Theatre, MTC, The Magnetic North Festival, The World Stage Festival and a tour of Hungary. A television movie adaptation was made of the play for which she won 2 Canadian Comedy Awards for performance and writing and a Gemini Award for best performance. A graduate of The National Theatre School of Canada, Kristen is a member of Soulpepper Theatre Company in Toronto and played the lead role in the feature film Away From Her, directed by Sarah Polley. She is currently Tarragon Theatre’s playwright-in-residence.

BeMe Theatre was co-founded in Barcelona, Spain by Elisa Moolecherry where she presented two productions, The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine and I, Claudia to massive appeal. After moving the company to Munich, Germany, Elisa teamed up with veteran English-language theatre producer Jean-Luc Julien, with the aim of continuing the success of English-language entertainment for the German and English-speaking communities. Elisa is a highly-regarded, professional actress from Canada, having worked in numerous Canadian and American film, television and theatre productions. She recently returned from her solo performance in I, Claudia which just finished a successful remount at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre in China. Jean-Luc was the co-founder and artistic director of The International Outcast Theatre Group (1996-2001) and produced their seven productions in Munich. In 2006 he co-founded Magnolia Theatre and co-produced/co-directed its debut production of A Night of Mamet at Theater und so fort. He has produced, directed and acted in English-language theatre in Los Angeles, Munich, Dubai and Cape Town.

“
– Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star

International Press on Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet):

Delightful often hilarious... MacDonald doesn't miss a trick, scattering satirical observations on love and sex, scholarship and Bard like birdseed, while taking full advantage of the slapstick possibilities in Shakespearean cross-dressing.
- The Washington Post

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)... is a dazzling romp. MacDonald is a real writer and her play is full of brilliance, wit, insight and theatricality.

In Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), playwright Ann Marie MacDonald takes us on a farce-filled leap into the lives of Shakespeare’s two great heroines: Desdemona and Juliet.

The mousy academic, Constance Ledbelly, is convinced that Shakespeare’s two most famous tragedies were originally comedies. By a cosmic twist of fate, Ledbelly finds herself transported - literally! - through her wastepaper basket into the worlds of Othello and Romeo and Juliet where all the world really is a stage: sword-fights, villains, passion, war, ghosts, beautiful women, a masquerade ball, girls dressed as boys, boys in love with girls dressed as boys, girls in love with girls dressed as boys but married to boys in love with girls dressed as boys… and, of course, unrequited love and betrayal. A wonderful romp, you don’t have to be a fan of Shakespeare to enjoy this hilarious gender-bending satire about one woman’s journey toward self-realization.
