Yes, I suspect all this kerfuffle has little to do with Catholic doctrine, and a lot to do with some German control-freak clerics getting their knickers in a typically Teutonic twist about anybody being allowed to do anything at any time. Safer to put a blanket ban on all activities and spend the whole day immobilised with fear in case anyone does anything that brings the sky crashing down.

I fear GreenTea has succinctly put her finger on it. That and also the fact that the Bavarians love to ram religion down its citizens throats at every available opportunity. Bastards.

I still say that the Catholic church's collective twisted knickers are symptomatic of their fear of losing power and influence over society in general, and that they do try to tell a large number of non-Catholics what to do and not to do. But I am willing to laugh with you, if not for the same reason.

The prists might not but the police might on occasions... on some catholic holidays where you are not allowed to dance, it is enforced by the police who check nightclubs etc. I also take offence to the church forcing us to non-catholics to adhere to its rules... (don't mind having their holidays here though :-)
