Have it on good authority that Air Berlin will start serving Stansted twice a day from MUC as of early November. Not sure if their site has details yet or not.

€1 each way plus tax.

Cheers for the tip Jimbo.
According to the website, online checkin for flights ex-UK is only available for flights departing Belfast, Glasgow or Manchester. Hope they'll include STN in this list before January.
MonksTown
Hope they keep offering decently priced flights.
I looked at some flights with Easyshit and they were only 20 yoyos cheaper than BA, ie more once you add on the transit costs into London from Norfolk.
Owain Glyndwr
aye, the train is nearly 40 quid return into London from Stansted.
MonksTown
FORTY QUID!
JESUS! ohmy.gif
Jimbo
Well, nearly forty quid if you consider £23.50 to be nearly forty quid.
Owain Glyndwr
actually, i think i am wrong on that. more like 25 quid return unless you go first class.

edit: yeah Jimbo i was just on a website that quoted 40 quid but that looks like the first class price.

this compares to £8 return for the tube to Heathrow or £28 for the Express or £14 return for the Connect trains.
Jimbo
Yeah, 39 notes for first class. I only know coz I catch the Stansted Express to work every day. Oh, and for anybody wondering, no, first class is not worth it.

Well I just looked at the site and at least in January they will have flights from Stanstead, so including taxes and other charges you can get a return flight at christmas from €62.
MonksTown
Or with an Oyster, £7 return if you travel Monday-Friday daytimes or as low as £ 4 return if you travel at other times!
And you can combine Heathrow tube travel with a Travelcard as well which is another expense on top if you fly to Stansted.

There has to be a WELL big price difference on the airfare before I'd consider flying to Stansted.

Just had a look at this for a weekend back in early December. It's good to see a little more competition on this route. However, the "€1" flights are actually €19, it's just that €18 on each leg are disguised as a "fuel surcharge", because obviously their tax-free fuel is an expensive and unforeseen cost that has to be levied separately.

This brings the return trip to €62. A great price under normal circumstances, but Lufthansa have reacted and reduced their price to €89 return, the lowest I've ever seen from them. Given that they fly to Heathrow rather than Stansted, offer seven flights a day rather than two, and have higher levels of service, I'll probably pay the extra €25 or so to go with them. The bus to and from Stansted alone comes to more than that.

Incidentally, BA are charging €160 for that period. Lufthansa charge a €13 "Ticket service charge" on top of their bookings, presumably to cover the cost of emailing you that all-important confirmation, but (bizarrely) if you book through lufthansa.co.uk the ticket price is the same and there's no additional charge. They also offer single tickets on this route at €49, giving you the option to fly one way with LH and in the other direction with Easyjet or Air Berlin, depending on times and pricing.

I honestly don't understand why BA are charing so much to fly MUC to LHR, considering Lufthansa are only charging £60! I know BA see themselves as an 'upgrade' from other airlines, but £50 extra is pushing it.

stansted a sh1thole.. generally a b@stard to get to..not worth bothering with unless desperado or live on doorstep.

the €89 fares from Lufthansa are just teasers. Most people can't fly at those times. I just checked out the weekend of the 9th November and you have to fly at 1pm on the Friday and 3:25pm on the sunday to get that fare.

If you want to fly when most people do, ie Friday evening at about 7pm and sunday evening at about 5pm, BA are cheaper than Lufthansa!

BA charge €160 whereas Lufthansa are more expensive at €186

Stansted may indeed be a comedy airport, but Heathrow is soooooooooo busy these days it freaks me out. Gets me all enochlophobic it does. But still the only true choice.

I have booked the family to Heathrow for Christmas and managed to get all of us flights with LH for 89 Euro each and could have flown on any flight. If you book in advance, you can get a great deal. On the other hand, when I wanted to go back to the UK at short notice for a funeral earlier this year, the cheapest flights to B'ham were 1400 Euro. Luckily hubby M/M points that I could use .

Tip with Stansted is to get the National Express bus rather than the train. It's not only cheaper, but unless you want to go to east London, it's can also be quicker.

A bus? A bus? Bugger that. I want me one of these instead:

not my expierence, i am flying for 89EURplus tax around christmas and return new year. MUC-LHR

Obviously the €89 deal is no good for 9-5ers looking to get away for the weekend, but the fact that planes at other times of the day/week are still 80% full shows that not everyone is that restricted. Obviously the prices are going to be higher Friday evening and Sunday evening. Like everything in life, you need to be flexible to get the best deal.

Yeah ditto. Mind you, I'm using Lufthansa.co.uk to avoid the €13 service charge.

Air Berlin now has more details on their website. The service starts on 5 Nov 07, and there are 2 flights per day for Monday to Friday, one per day at the weekend. Prices are from €1 each way, but with tax then it means a round trip price starting at about €62. It seems competitive against EasyJet, but that depends on where you are trying to get to in the UK. For me, East Anglia is fine, and the bonus is that Air Berlin gives you pre-assigned seats and a small snack, newspapers etc.

Horay to Air Berlin!!!

At least now when we want to get to London, we wont have to take mickey mouse air ways, who thought they would change a flawless check-in process for the rush and push process that they currently have.

Got an update from Air Berlin today, with the details of the route.

Horay to Air Berlin!!!

A friend of mine is captain with Air Berlin flying 737-800s and recently got transfer to be based in Munich (suits him as he lives there). He said that AB had been rather low key in MUC for years but activity was increasing - this must be one of the results thereof. If you see an AB captain in his late 40s well over 2m tall...

I've just booked tickets home via Lufthansa for xmas and NY (both sensible and/or peak times/days), got the 89EUR deal, but didn't realise that I could have avoided the 13EUR fee by booking thru .co.uk - thanks for the tipoff. I'll know for next time! Shame about the wasted pennies this time tho - would have been a bit more in the beer kitty... sad.gif

Flew on AB last night, Stansted to MUC, all in cost was €33. No check-in queues, reserved seat, good service including sarnie. I quite like Stansted coz it is quieter and if you don't live close to GTW or LHR anyway, then I guess it doesn't make much difference to you.
libby
I've just heard from the Air Berlin Customer Services that the MUC-STN route is being stopped after October.

Does anyone know if this is a winter schedule change, or a permanent loss?
HellesAngel
Shit. That means back to a scabbyJet monopoly mad.gif. Air Berlin weren't always cheap but they were always better than easyShit and it was convenient to have another option.
