Hello all,

I am new to the site, just got to Germany a few weeks ago. I don´t know my way around my city that well yet, but I am looking for a few things.. Not because I desperately miss them, but because I am in charge of planning a American Fall Evening and an American Christmas Party for my job. Can anyone help me?
cider? Is Federweiße the closest equivalent?
caramel apples?
real hot dogs?

I might have more things I need, but cider is the most 'dringend'! Thanks in advance for any help!!!

If you mean like American apple cider, no. You can get Apfel Most which is lightly fermented. If you want the non-alcoholic stuff, get Trub or Naturtrub Apfelsaft. Otherwise you can try English/Irish cider (Strongbow's or Magner's, for example) but they're nothing like what you're used to in the US.

caramel apples?
Gotta make those yourself. Caramel is damned easy to make.

real hot dogs?
"Real"? As in the American version of a Frankfurter or Wiener which is available everywhere here and has more actual meat, fewer lips and less skin than the ones back home? Just get Wieners; once you add the ketchup/mustard/onions/sauerkraut you'll never notice the difference. Most larger supermarkets carry hot dog buns these days.

Stores like Hit, Kaufhof and Hertie have a small section with a very limited selection of American products. Be prepared to pay out the wazoo for these; a small jar of French's yellow mustard which would cost less than $0.79 back home will set you back €3 or so. Gulden's is almost €6. Germans also think we Yanks eat tons of Marshmallow Fluff; they have more of that in the US products section than anything else. They often have Campbell's Tomato soup but Cream of Mushroom is rare. Toytown rules require you to report any and all sightings of Campbell's condensed Cream of Mushroom soup on sale in any German store. Your report should include Store name, address, city, price, and how much you're able to pick up for the rest of us.

woof.

Haven't tried them, but the online store United Foods stocks Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup. A bit pricey at 3.29 euro plus shipping.

It is listed as being in stock and available.

Thank you all for the very speedy answers!

Unfortunately the little American base (there was indeed one here, one of my co-workers kindly drove me by today) has closed. I have heard there is a base in Wiesbaden? Can anyone confirm this for me? Do I need an in (meaning an American soldier friend) or will my civilian ID do the trick?
Also (I have never celebrated a Christmas in Germany, so forgive me if the questions seem dumb!), I am looking for eggnog. Does that exist here? My best translation is Eierpunsch.
By hot dogs I meant Ballpark (specifically American brands). Of course sausage abounds here and is quite tasty, but I am trying to find authentic American brands.
I have not yet seen any Campbell´s Cream of Mushroom soup or any Campbell´s for that matter, but if I do, I will be sure to post it here! Don´t worry.
And one last question, Cheerios? (These are for me!)

Again, thanks all for the help. It is greatly appreciated, and will assist me in my quest to throw the best American parties this town has ever seen. wink.gif

lol, I have just received a request from a German friend of mine if Bisquick mix is available in Germany. Apparently during her trip to the US she got hooked and wants more, more, more.

unsure.gif Can she be helped?

nope as far as i know you need to get someone to take you to the base (it's right up a hill when you drive into wiesbaden coming from mainz if that helps) you might be able to get in by yourself, however they will "catch" you as soon as you get to the cashier cause you need an army id to be able to pay.

about the eggnog... hmm no clue...

maybe give that site i posted another look. haven't looked much into it myself, but maybe you find some of it on there...

Better stocked Karstadt stores will have Bisquick mix in their Feinkostabteilung (deli). Munich Main station and Nordbad branches certainly do, so try Karstadt Giessen, Wiesbaden or the likeliest bet Frankfurt Zeil (all in the basement).

If no easy source is available, give her this:

QUICK MIX (MAKE YOUR OWN BISQUICK MIX)

8 1/2 c. flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. instant nonfat dry milk
2 1/4 c. vegetable shortening

Sift together all dry ingredients into a large bowl. Blend well. With pastry blender, cut in shortening. Mixture should resemble corn meal in texture. Put in large airtight container. Label. Date clearly - should be used in 10 to 12 weeks. Store in cool, dry place. Makes about 13 cups of quick mix. Can be used in any recipe that calls for Bisquick.

You will need a Military friend...

Bisquick is readily avail. in Germany.. Just costs a little more than in the US, and the box is smaller.

Hi pixiedust,

Yes; there is a large complex in Wiesbaden as well as U.S. facilities in Hanau, although Hanau is scheduled to be closed sometime this year.

As for access, you will need someone with a DoD Identification and Priviledge Card to sign you in. Make sure you have your U.S. Passport.
