Hi Everyone,

My best friend is coming from Canada to visit (ya ya so excited) and we have been trying to find a good spot to go hiking in the Swiss Alps; we will be going around the start of October. Right now she really has her heart set on Gimmelwald. Has anyone been there? What is the best way to get there? Last time she visited we did some hiking in both Austria and Germany but since she has never been to Switzerland we are trying to find something there. Any suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks!

Gimmelwald is high... There is a nice mountain bike route up to it from Lauterbrunnen that takes about three hours up... Never bothered to walk up.

I think if I was visiting again I would spend time in one of the lower places (Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald or Interlaken) It just gives you much more choice as to where you can hike. The whole region is very well served by cable cars, trains and buses - so getting to and from starting/finishing points is really easy.

I think it would be well worth it.

I hiked up Schilthorn about 15 years ago. Was one of the most memorable things I ever did and also one of the most satisfying accomplishments. It took me a long long time (started in Gimmerwald). I had never ever been in any altitude per say and felt like I was having a heart attack the top half of the hike. There were times I literally thought I would die on that mountain, but I made it and the pictures I got from the top were well worth it. Have always wanted to go back and do it again. Maybe will plan that for next Spring/Summer. Thanks for the trip back down memory lane.

EDIT - I would HIGHLY recommend the mountain hostel there. Albeit it was 15 years ago, but even if the place has gone downhill (which I doubt) and isn't the same - the view itself and waking up to it is well well worth it.

Thanks so much! That hostel looks amazing!
How many days would you recommend we spend there?
