Trivial wee thing no doubt, but ever since I installed a new external wireless card on my laptop I am asked for a password every time i switch on now.

i don't know how this happened but cant turn it off, i just want to be able to let it turn on and straight to what it used to be which is my current profile now. (password is thankfully nothing!)

Download the Microsoft Powertoys package from MS, and enable the Automatic Login option

Welcome to Microsoft's world...

Run REGEDIT.exe

Find the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Find in that the folder SOFTWARE
in that MICROSOFT
in that WINDOWS NT
in that CurrentVersion
in that WINLOGON

In there there is many "Keys". Ensure that the key DefaultUserName is set to the user you log in as. And ensure AutoAdminLogon is set to 1

Then reboot and it should be done.

This basically happens, because as soon as you have a network device, Microsoft always assumes you are logging onto a network. I know there is a much less complicated way of doing this, but really cannot remember right now, so the advise from Mauddib should fix it !

If I remember correctly, it's because adding any network device also automatically installs the "Client for Microsoft Networks" in your network connection properties. This isn't needed for surfing the internet (in your typical home configuration).
