Dame Anita Roddick dies aged 64

She was a bloody good businesswoman. Just a shame I could never go into one of her shops on account of a dibilitating allergy to perfume.

sold out bodyshop to a global player who's happily violating any old principle the bodyshop ever stood for.
can't quite get my latin up to par, nothing bad about the dead, etc.
never believed in that. from what is publicly available, she was a turncoat money*-grabber in her later years.
she let a lot of people down, now she's dead. shit happens.

*or whatever - you name it, god knows she should have been financially comfortable enough by then, and as to fame: it's Dame Anita, isn't it

Although she stepped aside as the ceo of bodyshop, the original principles still remain in place. Yes the body shop has changed and adapted its look to maintain its competitiveness, but just because the shops look like clarins, or yves st lauren doesnt mean they have the same ethics and principles. Body shops principles have not changed in that body shop products are not tested on animals, are bought from renewable resources from communities which have a long term arrangement with the company.

There will be always resentment for those who do well, particularly in the corporate world, but Anita started her own business next to an undertaker ( unfortunate choice of name for a next door neighbour :-) ) and built it up from there to what it is today.

I have enormous respect for her, what she did and the legacy she has left behind.

The world has lost one of its true entrepreneurs.

She was very careful how she defined testing on animals. Bodyshop sold a lot that had been previously tested on animals by other companies before she set up Body Shop, but, as understand it, would not sell anything that had been tested on animals after she started Body Shop.

Interesting read, written over 10 years ago too.
