Advice on choosing an area to live in
BirchBeer
We're in the early stages of planning a move to Dresden and would like to do a scouting trip next month to look at neighbourhoods. We'd like to be reasonablly close to the center of Dresden (within a 30 minute train/tram/bus ride, closer than that is fine too), preferably in a nice area with some decent cafes and restaurants of its own. Also green space/parks.

We're over 40, not into the whole nightlife or clubbing scene anymore, but we don't want to live in a neighbourhood with nobody but pensioners either. And we don't want to live some place rural with no shops, cafes, etc.

If things go as planned, we can spend up to about 1000€ per month on rent. What will that get us in the Dresden area?

Also, IF--very speculative at this point, of course--we decide to buy a place in Dresden, any recs for estate agencies? Very roughly speaking, what should we expect to spend for a well-built (or well-renovated) two-bed, two bath apartment (minimum) with fireplace, balony or terrace and parking in a good neighborhood/suburb? Or possibly a townhouse (if there are any around in that area).

Many thanks!

Welcome to the Forum, In terms of where to live, Neustadt is very lively. The Altstadt is very touristy. Johannstadt and Strissen are also ok places to live. 1000Euros a month can get you a castle in Dresden as rent here is very cheap.
However, if you rent an unfurnished flat you have to bring in your own kitchen, which is a a bitz bizzare.

If you want to buy as an investment, you won't make money in property here like you do in the UK.

No, we're not looking to become property developers. But if the job turns out as well as we hope, then we'll be in the Dresden area for several years.

Yes, putting in our own kitchen is a bit odd, fortunately, we have relatives in NRW who are kitchen and bath designers! biggrin.gif

We've lived in furnished and part-furnished places long enough, we'd like a place kitted out with our stuff for a change.

Thanks for the area recs.

Hi, I live in Striesen! It's a very safe area with lots of family type neighborhoods. I have a 2 bedroom flat for 485 euros per month. That's warm rent which means that the heat is included. The second bedroom is very small, and is probably more like an arbeiten ? (office) But I love it here. It's close to Schillerplatz and the Blaue Wunder. I arrived in July and plan to stay. Good Luck with your search!

Dear Dresden guys,
It may be happen that I am moved from Munich to Dresden because of work, the company has already been giving me some advice about what Dresden is like and I have read most of what is on TT which is really helpful.
I heard from people that at the moment with the hightech industry moving into Dresden that it is a bit of a boom town and is rapidly becoming a popular place to live with reasonable rents, I guess the rent part is true, what about the 'boom town'?

The company owns an apartment in or near Pesterwitz, which by the look of the map is a bit out of town, anyone got any info on what it is like around there??

Thanks for your help...

If you haven't found it yet, Dresden's city website has a good interactive map of the city. Yeah, so does Google, but this one is really Dresden-specific and includes neighborhood names. Check it out.

You'll find traffic even at rush hour isn't like a big city, but it CAN slow down at peak travel times. Think about where the office is and how road/street car connections are.

Also the maps on VVO-online.de will help you choose a house if you want to live near a strassenbahnhaltestelle. You won't ever need a car!
