Mmmm... if you like cooking for people... *cough*...
there's a fairly big one at the beginning of the Lange Reihe, across from the Sparkasse, you can't miss it. there's also a indian market next door.

Hi there!
Vinh-Loi at the Hauptbahhof is pretty good. Also there's Asia-Shop at Schanze, just next to the train station. In general I would say all of them are pretty expensive so try to bring spices from home. I couldn't believe how much they wanted for sea weed!

Do any of the vietnamese places carry a decent range of fresh herbs (holy basil and all the classic vietnamese ones that get served alongside a meal. The guy in the restaurant said most of them didn't even have names in English)?
I've been addicted to vietnamese food ever since I discovered the magificent Song Que Café on Kingsland Road in Shoreditch (London) and would like to get my hands on a few of the ingredients myself.

Vinh-Loi has a pretty good fresh veg & herbs section at the back, gets crowded on Saturdays but well worth fighting your way through to! My opinion only, but it's better and a little cheaper than the one on Lange Reihe.

I would say a lot of them have English names. Have a look:
http://www.foodsubs.com/HerbsAsian.html Let's say if you have rice paper, sesame leafs and some beef, you are half way sorted out :-)
It looks like we should open a cooking forum here :-0

There's already a cooking forum on the site somewhere!
I guess most of them have names in English, but this vietnamese dude in the restaurant didn't really speak that much English but I guess he wanted to seem like he knew his stuff so he said "THERE IS NO NAME!!" in an officious manner, haha
but yeah, the grilled beef wrapped in Betel leaf is a personal favourite.
I am so going there when I go back to the UK for a visit in a few weeks...

tia to = tia tô Notes: These leaves are purple on one side and green on the other. They have a pleasant, peppery flavor that tastes a bit like cinnamon. Vietnamese cooks often add them to soups at the last minute. Substitutes: shiso OR sweet Asian basil
Awesome!! I've been trying to find out what this one is for ages - I really like it but have never seen it on sale in shops although I've had it in restaurants a few times.
I've learned something useful today!
