Aussie Rules Football Grand Final - Sep.2004

Which Munich pubs will show it?

That "One day in September" is coming around again. Which pubs are playing the Aussie Rules Grand Final this year? Which would you recommend?

Last year I listened to the tail end of Roy and HG's broadcast on JJJ over the internet, which was brilliant. I then went to the rerun at Ned Kelly's, which was disappointing as the pub is pretty dingy (also I think they water down their Augustiner - you have to order it in bottles there).

There is one member here who obviously has a vested interest in recommending a certain pub, but I am still interested in hearing what he has to offer.

Hazza might have a vested interest, but I'll recommend The Arc for sports viewing without having a vested interest. I watched a fairly major sports final (with a fair number of people present) there this week. It's easy to find a good viewing spot, especially lush if you get the couch, the ventilation was acceptable and the quality of the TVs and screen are good. Couldn't hear the play by play that well, but that's probably just a matter of turning up the volume.

Sounds good. Who else will be going to see it and where?

When is it and who's playing?
Showem
From what I remember, I think it's Saturday, September 25th. Showing live at something like 5am.

I heard the Bondi has to close down, is that true or just a rumour?

How does that work? The time zones don't add up. I guess you mean a replay is 11am German time, then?
bex
nope, ooh, maybe. sorry I was told the game is live here at 11am...
Showem
They might be showing the replay at 11am, but the live game starts at 5am Munich time.

According to the AFL site, the game itself starts at 14:30 Melbourne local time.

According to http://timeanddate.com this is 6:30 am Munich local time (Munich time = Melbourne time - 8 hours at this time of year).

They have a replay on Sky later in the day, but I am not sure when and still am not sure where to go and see it.
Showem
Isn't Melbourne 9 hours ahead of Munich while it's daylight savings time?
interplanetjanet
No, it's always an even number (8 or 10), since we go opposite directions when we change times.
Hazza
The game will be broadcast live at The Arc. We'll probably just stay open all night.

Game starts around 6:30am local time, but as we've been advertising to all the Aussie tourists here for the Oktoberfest, I would suggest you get there early...
bludger
Sounds great. Do you also have the Roy and HG commentary? (I assume not).

Do you also play a replay later?
Hazza
We don't have internet connection at the bar, so can't do Roy and HG. In any case, I think most people would prefer to hear the original commentary.

We won't show a replay, because the ICC Champions Trophy (Cricket mini world cup) final starts at 11am and we'll be braodcasting that live once the Aussie Rules is finished. The Bondi and Ned Kelly's are both showing a replay of the GF though.

This is the first time since I arrived in Munich that any pub has played the game-of-all-games live. When I first came to Munich in 1996, Shennanigan's played the replay. Later it went to Outland, the owner of which at the time was English and had never even heard of the game until I went around and asked him if he was going to play it. Recently the delayed broadcast moved to Ned Kelly's, which is also owned by non-Aussies (the same guy who used to own Shennanigan's and a few other Irish pubs in Munich, from what I've heard), but correctly honours our-Ned, so I can't complain.

Now finally comes Hazza and puts things right. No Roy and HG like when I watched Collingwood break their losing streak at the Tote in Collingwood, but I didn't really expect that. Onya mate.

I'll try to be there before 6am as you say. My wife and a girlfriend of ours will be coming as well, so I had better make sure I refresh their understanding of the rules. I hope your coffee is good (or at least strong).
