I am wondering that I should buy a desktop computer in the US or in Germany. In addition, what are other electronic items, if any, I should purchase in the US to bring with me when I move Germany. Your advice and comments are appreciated.

Computer will be much cheaper in the States. Most other stuff I wouldn't bother with the hassle of transporting I reckon. Whatever you do purchase, remember that over here it's a 240v system, not 120v, so check out the tech specs.

Assuming a PC? It'll be more expensive here, but I would buy it here - for the reason of the warranty. (Have a look at dell.com vs. dell.de for price comparisons). Otherwise, you’ll have to import the computer and in that case it may not be covered with the warranty. I did fill out said forms for Dell when I brought my laptop over, so this is possible.
Lastly, the desktop computer should be able to accept 120 and 220 volt. You could check this when you buy the computer…

DEFINITELY buy it in the States. I have all my computers from the States (all power supplies have 110/220 switches) and whenever I go home I buy the part(s) I need for upgrades. The money you'll save is justification enough.

You move your PC or laptop from the US to Europe and you need any support you are going to be in one world of hurt. Microsoft, for one, is split into geographical areas and they will not offer support for products purchased in one area and then moved to another. So, say you need a replacement CD because your OS CD broke. What do you do? You phone up Microsoft. Since you are in Europe you get the European service. You tell them you got your PC and software in the US. They say, "Sorry we can't help you. Call the US support service". You call the US and they will say "Hi, you live in Europe? Sorry, we can't ship to Europe". Trust me on this one because I am in a position to know. So my advice is it will definitely be cheaper in the US, but only if nothing goes wrong.

Actually if your OS CD broke, the 1st stop/call is the Maker of the PC. Not Microsoft.

Apple laptop with 3 year Applecare is a world wide warranty. Get the laptop in the states and then get a flat screen over here for the laptop.
