Health insurance options with €400 mini-job

Hi-

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I looked up other threads and couldn't find exactly the info I needed.

I am going to be starting a mini job and was wondering if that makes me eligible for the gov-regulated health insurance. I've looked into some of the private plans mentioned on the other threads, but since my income will be limited to the 400euro mini job and some savings with the cheapest private insurances costing about 200euro that still too rich for my blood.

Anyone in a similar situation that could give me a clue on what my options are? I could easily get some travel insurance for the next year but they tend to only cover emergencies and i would like something a bit more comprehensive if i can manage it. also, keeping my insurance from back home isn't an option since i had a real bare bones plane and it doesn't cover me at all abroad unless its an accident.

I am here on a 2 year language visa, with the "ziel" of getting into a uni. I'm taking private lessons though since the language schools weren't fitting into my work and study schedule so I think that means I'm not eligible for student health insurance, or is having a student visa enough?

Anybody a health insurance expert out there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

(Also, does anyone know what the cost of a Haftpflichtversicherung policy is? I was told by one person that it only costs 20-30euros for the year, but when I contacted a insurance agent he told me the policy cost 80euro. That still seems a reasonable amount but if there are cheaper plans with similar coverage, that would be preferable. Thanks again.)

Excuse me, but what's a 'mini-job'? blink.gif

1. mini-job: with a 400-EUR mini-job your employer pays on top of your gross-for-net salary some 30% for health insurance and other social welfare fees. However, that does not mean that your receive health insurance for that. with 400-EUR job you can indeed only get yourself a private health insurance as a freelancer for (some sources say) around 120.- EUR/month. The better solution would be to convince your employer to give you a 450.- EUR-job. When your salary is in excess of 400.- EUR per month, you'll get compulsory public health insurance. You will receive only a net salary then of about 311.- EUR p.m., but you'll receive the full package of social welfare insurances with it. At the same time your employer has only around 45.- EUR higher costs per month and I would try to convince him to do that for you with some free extra hours of work each month if I were you because it is still a real bargin if you can get health insurance plus other insurance for that. Check this link for more info in German: http://www.finanztip.de/recht/arbeitsrecht/mini-jobs.htm

Haftpflichtversicherung: 60-80 EUR per year sound about right from my professional point of view. There may be Cheaper insurances out there, but you should compare the small print and the track record (how fast do the pay, to they have a lot of legal disputes with claimees etc). Those I can recommend (which are usually in line with what FINANZTEST recommends there) are all in the vicinity of 60-80 EUR per year for a single person.
