Sleeping on the job

Big time faux pas, or acceptable behaviour?

i just had a little discussion with one of my colleagues at work. she said she knows of occasions where an upper level manager here has been found by a secretary to be in deep slumber at his desk. i said so what, i think it's healthy, it's not a bad thing at all. she said no no you don't understand, it was not during lunch time (mittagspause). again i said so what, any time can be a good time for a nap, we don't have to take breaks according to the clock. she seemed upset and said that to be found at your desk sleeping is a very embarrasing thing. i said i like the idea of naps, and as long as whoever's doing it doesn't do it all day long, that i don't see any problem with it. she looked at me like i was crazy and walked away. i'm not saying power naps are welcomed in any working environment in any other country, still i wonder what some other people think about this.

1) Should lock the door
2) Possibly overworked... Yes it does happen!

When I ate a pasta based meal for lunch, I would have uncontrollable urges to sleep afterwards- I would be at my desk with my eyes closing and my head dropping forward. It was terrible. When I realised it was the pasta, I stayed away from it.

we have our own little office rooms, but for some reason the doors don't lock from the inside. i'd say naps are a good thing, even if you have a normal not too tough to manage work level. personally i like to practice zazen meditation on my chair at my desk, but it kind of looks like i'm napping.
Deccie
there is nothing wrong with a nap, as long as it is only a nap and not getting those 3 hours required sleep due to being on a bender the night before.

Some companies encourage so called "power naps"

I had a nice kip at my desk just last night, actually. However, I am self-employed. No bloody chance in the office - too many inconsiderate muppets nattering away on the phone, trying to have meetings and bringing you coffees. rolleyes.gif

You mentioned he was Upper Management, it depends how upper whether it matters or not doesn't it?

ie, who is gonna tell him off for it? If you are a mere peon however i would think you would normally be in the shit for kipping at your desk.

I don't think it's a wise idea for anyone, no matter how high or low in the company they are, to sleep at their desk/in the office, unless on an official break.

I've done it before, but I did it at lunchtime. Locked my office door, put my gym towel under my head, and just lay down in the middle of the floor and slept for 45 minutes. Fantastic. Naps actually are proven to improve efficiency. I think offices really should start organizing "quiet rooms" where one can go to snooze. Sometimes you get stressed and just need a break, and when you wake up your subconscious has come up with a fantastic solution to your problem while you feel quite refreshed.

I once was feeling very unwell at work (years ago, when I was in an office with two others) and so I lay down beneath my desk because I thought I might fall over if I didn't. Scared the bejeebus out of my colleague to see just my feet sticking out from under my desk.

A few weeks ago my boss told me he needed some rest and asked me to hold all calls for half an hour. Sho' 'nuff, he tilted his chair back, put his feet on the desk and snoozed. Worked like magic, he was in a much better mood when he re-surfaced.
@ Ruthie: It's even better when you lie under your desk with your feet on your chair. My then boss freaked out.

I think a good night sleep is much more important ,if I was so tired I would go home

The place I worked while I was in college had a sleeping room. it was a cot and a couch in a fairly small room a bit off of the break room. I know a few guys that took naps in there from time to time...it was meant for the office people, but I worked in distribution...

Anyways, that was Hal Leonard Music Publishing...great place to work, very understanding. Though you were supposed to tell the computer if you were going for a nap.

We have these at work already. smile.gif

Whenever I need a snooze, I go off to the loo for about a half hour or so, and sleep sitting with my face in my hands. wink.gif

I'm in an open plan office and all meeting rooms are glass boxes - so no chance to go and nap -except to the loo, but they're not so inviting...

But I think an employee, boss etc should make sure they get enough sleep at home.

as long as he is getting his work done, I don't see the problem. It is not like he is on the clock is it? Upper level management get paid for results, not the amount of time they spend in the office. He probably works quite long hours, so a nap in between can be good for productivity.
boomtown_rat
true although I guess you could argue he wasnt setting a great example
zemonkey
Had these in my office in Paris - traded them in for an office gym in Germany. The first I never used but did obligate a secretary to use after she fainted twice in a day (she did not want to go home).

I prefer the gym. Want to take a nap, go to a management meeting.

Dont think its a great idea to sleep at work, u can probably relax, close your eyes, put your head on the desk and unwind yourself. But sleeping is a complete no no.

He's probably not pregnant.

But it could be another health issue. Not sure what all is possible - could the secretary get him to talk to a doctor?

A few times, I fell asleep at the wheel while fully rested, so I got meds to take when I'm driving. It's AMAZING what a difference it makes - I hadn't realized I'd spent so much energy every day of my life just battling to stay awake. Always thought I was just lazy.

When I saw the subject line line, I thought it was a thread about dozing off whilst having sex, which I would certainly consider very disrespectful.

We have a ruheraum downstairs...apparently napping is ok at EADS smile.gif

Yeah two of my previous employers had nap rooms. They say 20 minute power naps are good for you and my last job it was encouraged, but I never took advantage cause then I wouldn't want to wake up smile.gif

one of the companies I used to work for had a resting room for pregnant women. seems like most of the time it was commandeered by those of us coming off a bender though!
mere
what's the difference between napping and wasting time on the internet? your productivity level is the same.
TeeJay
I personally wish i could take power-naps, but for my work in retail (well customers come first i guess).

But i do have the ability to do power-naps during lunch hours for 20 or so minutes, the boss things its fine.

Also depends on what type of employment you have. If you have a office desk job and you have finished everything you gotta do because your such a good worker, then i think you deserve a quick small nap during work hours untill you have something eles to do. Not recommending all day though tongue.gif. Pay to sleep - i would love that!
globalgirl
Had a job as a small retail clothing store manager. All the other managers were either out of town or way too sick to even get out of bed to get to the store. I managed to get to the store alright but was really sick with this flu epidemic too.
I couldn't stay upright behind the counter, so eventually spent almost the whole 10 hours the store was open sleeping on a bunch winter coats we clearing out, and only surfacing when one of the part-timers would come and get me to do refunds etc.
Uncle Nick
I used to fall asleep regularly at work until I had something done about mt sleep apnoea.

She probably never ran into someone she couldn't engage in gossip before.

The guy could be in radiation therapy or something. His stuff. Hold him capable of handling it.
