Why do we run?
Around 47,000 women in Germany are confronted with the diagnosis of breast cancer each year. It can happen at any age. In a large number of cases, the disease is detected late and sometimes too late. We want to change that!
"We" are the people who want to act instead of talk. We started the German Affiliate of the Susan G. KOMEN Breast Cancer Foundation in 1999, a non-profit organization that wants to finance specific programs to promote education about early detection and to improve patient care. We do all this under the international symbol for breast cancer, the pink ribbon.
Who runs?
Everybody runs! To raise awareness about breast cancer in Germany, we have been organizing the KOMEN Race for the Cure® on the Museumsufer in Frankfurt since 2000. Almost 5,000 runners came last year and turned the run into a movement - for and with breast cancer patients.
It all started in Dallas, Texas, in October 1983 with 800 runners at the first KOMEN Race for the Cure®. Today more than 1.5 million people participate annually in more than 110 cities in this, the largest series of world-wide 5 km runs, to show their support for the cause.
Why should you run?
Every year more and more people discover the fun of joining the KOMEN Race for the Cure® - running together for a goal: to raise awareness about a life-threatening disease and to give courage and strength to those affected. And they are there too, in the pink T-Shirts.
To be a part of this event is a very special experience for everyone who has ever participated. Much more is gained than just personal physical fitness.
