Hello,

Coming to Oktoberfest for 1 week. I am wondering what is the best value ticket for using the public transport in Munich whilst I am in town. Planning to travel to Dachau and also will be coming in from the airport and back out to the airport using public transport. Is a Isar Card the right one to get? Your assistance would be appreciated in this matter.

Thanks

Fransisco

Depends on the days you are here as IsarCards are issued for calendar weeks not 7 day periods.

I will be in Munich from Monday to Monday
Mariposa
Yeah, the Isarcard will be good then. It is valid Monday to the next Monday at noon.

Isar Card Rings 1-4 and then use an "Aussenraum" day ticket on the days you are going to the Airport / Dachau.

To specify this further: when arriving at the airport, go to the S-Bahn counter and ask for one "Isar Card Wochenkarte Ringe 1-4" (IsarCard for one week, i.e. from Monday to next Monday noon; rings 1-4 means valid within Munich city borders). Will be EUR 15,80 and is good for as many trips as you like, any time, with any public transport within Munich city borders. Does not have to be validated in one of the blue boxes, as the duration of validity will already be printed on it.

Also ask for 3 "Tageskarte Aussenraum" (ticket for one day, outer zone), as both the airport and Dachau are not within Munich city borders. So, one for getting from the airport into the city, one for your Dachau day trip, and one to get you back to the airport. One will be EUR 5,00.

Important: as the Tageskarte Aussenraum is only valid for the area outside Munich city limits, only the combined tickets (Tageskarte and IsarCard) will be good for the airport and Dachau trips. Also, be sure to validate the Tageskarten in one of the blue boxes at the station entrances of U-Bahn / S-Bahn before entering the train. The blue box will print the day of validation on the Tageskarte, enabling the fare inspectors to see that the ticket is valid for this or that day.

@fransiscocaramanga: wil you be staying out in Dachau or are your just taking a day trip there, it wasn't 100% clear in the OP.

I am staying in the centre of Munich, only travelling out to Dachau. We are now planning to go to the Monastry at Andechs, would that be covered by a tageskarte aussenraum? If not, would ticket would be needed to travel to there?

Yes, Andechs is also covered by the Tageskarte Aussenraum. But Andechs has no direct train service, it is only served by 2 regional bus routes, to which you can either transfer at the S-Bahn S5 Herrsching terminal or at the S-Bahn S6 Starnberg Nord (not to be confused with Starnberg itself!) station. Please make sure to check the schedules of the Andechs buses (routes 951 and 956) in advance - they only run very limited service, somewhat like two buses out to Andechs before noon and two buses back in the afternoon. But you can also hike from the S5 Herrsching terminal to Andechs, it's kind of a nice walk. Takes 2 hours one way, so if the weather is nice maybe you would like to go for it. Don't try hiking from Starnberg to Andechs anyway - it's too far away for walking.

One question: when you go back to the airport on Monday, will this be before or after noon?
fransiscoscaramanga
Its an evening flight, so would be travelling back to airport after noon.

Ok, so then I would recommend for you:

1 IsarCard Wochenkarte Ringe 1-4 EUR 15,80
3 Tageskarte Aussenraum 3x EUR 5,00 = EUR 15,00
1 Tageskarte Gesamtnetz EUR 10,00

total EUR 40,80

IsarCard for your trips within Munich city limits
Tageskarte Aussenraum as addition to the IsarCard for airport -> Munich, Dachau, Andechs

As the IsarCard will expire Monday noon, you will need a "complete" ticket for getting you back to the airport on Monday afternoon, this would be the Tageskarte Gesamtnetz (day ticket for all areas, inside and outside city).

Enjoy your trip to Munich smile.gif
