I`d say option 2...

I'm up for option 2 as well. I'd like to head to a shop with people who know what the gears all about wink.gif

So I've put up my photo's from EchingerSee and Augsburg... next time we go out, I'll make sure I've charged my camera's batteries!

I think the new TT Paddle Club should have at least one of these...I especially like the color.

My memory's a bit hazy but I think its here

Can't get the address exactly correct, but follow Zentralländstr (the bit I've marked) until the end, and where the road ends there's a bridge with a chute and wave under it. And below that a resonable bit of flatwater. This is also where the log rafts end up after those drinking trips down the Isar.

There are some moderately interesting rapids for about 1 km above that, and the good thing is you can paddle up the canal beside it to the top. That's why all the kayak clubs are located there, its really good for evening training in the winter. It does sometimes get shutdown for maintanance, so it would really suck if that hapenned this weekend, anybody in the area feel up to scouting it out?

And I guess I better plan to get a longjohn wetsuit and a kag really fast. Where in munich should I go for such things? I remember the sport shop at Münchner Freiheit used to be popular.

So I think we've discussed things for the weekend in general terms let's now agree times and places.

In the morning some of us will make a run down to Rosenheim to check out the sale at Blue and White, for this I propose that we meet up at the "boat yard" (i.e. PolarQuests) at 08:00ish.
The reasons for this proposal:
1) I was going to drop my boat off there in the morning so that when we load boats in the afternoon it can all be done in one go.
2) It's close to Lohhof S-Bahn so people traveling by train can be picked up easily.
3) There's car parking space so we can meet up and then jump into the minimum number of cars required for the number of people traveling.
4) I think everyone knows where it is.
@PQ is this okay for you?

In the afternoon we plan to paddle at Thalkirchen.
Let's meet at the carpark just to the north of the arrow on the map that MAM posted (above) at 13:00ish.
An alternative meetup could be the "boat yard" at 12:00ish as we'll need to load boats.

As I'll be out most of the day I'm intending to grab lunch on the hoof somewhere between Rosenheim and Munich - therefore I'm not planning on carrying the BBQs with me on Saturday. Instead I'll probably just take a flask of soup or tea. Of course if the intention is to combine paddling with a meeting of the outdoors dining club and the BBQs are required then please let me know.

JG

Sounds ok, except for me to goto PQ's, means heading north, to head south again... Perhaps I can just meet you guys at Blue & White ?

hi
what time sould i get to the station in the morning
james
JayGee
@Kirth: If you like I could pick you up - best place for me would be Daglfing (on the S8) at 07:30ish - it would save taking one almost empty car to Rosenheim. Your call.

@WK: I'll be aiming to be at PQ's around 08:00ish so if you're at Lohhof as I drive in I'll pick you up then, otherwise we'll get you on the way out. You have my number so if there are any problems we should be able to hook up via phone.
Kirth
@JG: Cheers for the offer, however I'm gonna be picking Graham up on the way, so I'll meet you guys down there smile.gif

Phew...seems like an early start...don`t wake me!

I`m not going to B&W... I dare not buy any more boating gear this season!

Will plan on being at Thalkirchen at about noon and will take as many WW boats as I can (I`m heading up to get the demo boats this afternoon) I`ll put aside whatever WW boats I cannot load and whoever returns here can get? (I`m getting three demo`s, I think I can only get four boats on my roof, so would need soemone to get the green & red daggers from here) JG, are you thinking you will bring the touring boats?

Please, one note of caution: When loading boats etc in the parking lot here, particularly on a Sat morning, be aware of the horses, a lot of them are fancy dancy dressage horses, skittish as hell, and "ridden" by owners even more prone to orbital activity at the slightest untoward dissturbance. That said, it is after all, a stable, and not a kayak yard!! You know what I`m saying! Thanks.

Graham, I did not make it to Augsburg so did not get the Prijon. Figure you could see what B&W have...also paddle one of the demos, and we could get in next week if nothing turns up over the weekend.

Bannockburn..are you going to get out for a paddle?

MadAx, I`ll hopefully get a demo boat you can fit in...are you going to B&W?

As far as the "Outdoor Eating Club", I`m sure on this occasion, we can improvise, and bring pre-cooked delicacies. This may actually suit my Hamper better, and be good practice for when we venture further afield into the Bavarian wilderness and have to live off the land.

If you see the "have to have" bargain at B&W, feel free to call me on my cell for counciling.

The Canadian is available to use also, it may be fun to have, but it will require a dedicated vehicle to transport it, along with a strurdy person/s to load it. The paddles are in the horse box.

Just another thought...

As its getting a wee bit colder...

When you are all spending your hard earned sheckels...bear in mind that even though it seems that the paddling season is drawing to a close, it should be possible to paddle quite long into the winter (if one is keen enough) and start again quite early in the spring. The spring is when its going to be coldest. My point is that you might want to get some basic cold weather paddle gear now, so you can extend this season, start earlier next, and be warm and toasty tomorrow.

At least, consider some "poggies" neoprene "mitts" that fit to the paddle shafts. IMO, neoprene gloves are junk...at best you have to cover the paddle shafts with wax, and it compromises your feel of the paddle. The neoprene poggies wrap the paddle shaft and allow you to paddle "bare" handed while keeping your hands warm. They do work, I`ve used them for years in Alaskan, glacial water. Don`t buy the nylon versions...also junk.

If you see bargains on drytops, inspect the neck & wrist seals carefully. Also bear in mind, we can buy the Hiko drytops new at between 90-150 euro.

Helmet liners are cheap...look stupid when worn without a helmet...and are awesome in cold water.

IMO..."semi" dry tops and pants are better that full "dry" suits, tops and pants.

Think about some safety stuff...would be good to see some more towlines and throwbags appearing (then we can spend some time learning how to use them!) The little ones (10-15m bags) are cool to have (they can live in the little area in your cockpit made for a drinks holder) They are cheap, small but it would be cool to know that each WW boat has one in it.

Who else has a First aid kit on the water ? (FYI, there is a small basic behind the seat in mine) I like those cheap biking kits, take out the contents, wrap in two ziplocks, but it bag in the original bag, tie it to the backrest in your boat, and hope you never need it. The only thing I add is a CPR shield. On this topic, it would be good at some point this winter to set up a rescue/safety/first aid session.

Finally for a colder day like tomorrow...each paddler should have a flask with something warm in it to drink in your vehicle along with extra warmup clothes.

To answer and add to some of the questions and comments from PQ.

Boat Yard vs Stable: Noted.

Picking up Boats: I wasn't planning on taking the tourers; I can pick up both the green and the red dagger.

Safety Kit:
- I also have a small first aid kit that I keep in my boat - in addition to the usual plasters and tape I've also included a "space blanket" which I think is a useful addition.
- If you carry a throw line or a tow line you ought to also carry a knife should you need to cut away any lines in a hurry. The advice I was given is look for something with a blunt tip (to save accidental punctures) either with a fixed blade (and sheathed) or with a locking blade that you can open with one hand. I carry mine on a lanyard on my PFD.
- A whistle is a very cheap but useful addition to your safety kit.

Pogies/Gloves: I bought some neoprene gloves once and now never use them simply because I found they kept my hands cold not warm. Personally I've found that even in the snow and ice, as long as I'm paddling my hands stay warm, but if I needed anything more I'd go with pogies. I would also suggest carrying (in a dry bag) gloves and hats for any stops off the water.

Keeping Dry/Warm:
- I like my dry suit for the cold weather, but if you go that route bear in mind that not only do they keep the river water out but they also keep the sweat in. So if you wear a dry suit for a while still expect to change in to dry clothes later.

Other Kit to Consider:
- Dry bags/Peli cases: for kit you want to take with you and keep dry. Typically the best place to store kit is in the back of your boat so take into account how much space you have and the config of your boat.
- Airbags: fill up any unused empty space (typically in the back of the boat) with airbags.
- Spare bungs: if you lose your bung on a trip it's a pain, carry a spare.
- Split paddles: useful to have a set of spare paddles tucked away just in case somebody in the group loses/breaks a paddle (essential for remote trips; not required for park & play)

I'm probably going to B&W. Would have to leave at 07:30 which makes a nice change from leaving at 06:10 as I've been doing all week.

Not in the market for gloves. I find cycling without gloves really hardens your hands agains the cold, with the disadvantage that I can't wear gloves skiing because my hands get too warm.

would love to do it.
i am currently still as an EXpat in south africa but will be returning in november. here i only did races with the fiberglass kayak. can someone tell me approx the prices of the white water canoes in germany now? then i can maybe get one here and bring it back with?
thanks
polarquest
Hi Domonic in South Africa smile.gif ! Welcome to our growing TT Paddle group. You would be most welcome to join us when you return. Boat prices vary from used 250Euro to 1500 new for current design plastic boats. Don`t know what is avail in SA, but as most are made in Europe or the US, may not be worth it from there. I would suggest you try some different boats once you are here, and as a group, I think we are going to try to have one or two boats available as short term loaners until you get set up. Just post here or get in touch with one of us onece you are back.

I just collected 3 demos from Waterworld. We have a Robson Sportster to try, a Robson Twin Tip (Jon you neeed this boat!) For those of you in the boat market tomorrow at B&W, bear in mind that these demos are for sale also, and very little used. The Sportster is the pro version (fancy seat system) for 580 (thats the wholesale price) The TwinTip 430Euro. There is also a Zelezny Wigo play boat (that I neeed!) tongue.gif That is 400 euro. I could be talked out of my new Inazone for 550 (its quite a new boat) wink.gif I also have some paddles for 80euros (all right hand)

Jon, I picked up two pieces of seat/hip foam that was all he had, but its all thats in the others, just duct taped in...

JG, I take it you can bring the two Daggers that are here.

Dave
JayGee
@PQ: yep I'll pickup the daggers.
JReast
I'm planning on coming over tomorrow afternoon at least. Let me know if you want anything picking up. I'll square up with you tomorrow Dave for the other. What are the paddles you've got? If you do need something taking down there, can you just PM me ur address Dave. Not sure I'd find it again. JG, did you get any other takers for the rugby l8r? It'd certainly be nice to watch it with company.
Kirth
I'm now not gonna be able to make the morning, friends coming over tonight.

However, I'll definitely be there for the afternoon. Graham and I going to cycle down.

Just had a look at the twin tip spec. Is it a kayak or a barrel? biggrin.gif

Like the look of the Wigo though €400 ohmy.gif That looks nice to play could be a fight over that one. Is that the one you sent me details of earlier. Looks similar?

Yeah, the twin tip is bizare! going to be interesting to sit in that...the Wigo looks awesome, its super light to...

Don't hold your breath about me turning up at 08:00 tomorrow in the kayak stables. A friend has arrived in town and I'll probably be burning the midnight oil with him. More likely to just grab a set of long johns in town and arrive down for 13:00. No barbeques? Ok we'll live.
Kirth
Thanks for a great day out.. .was interesting trying the different types of kayaks. Not too sure about the loaners wink.gif

I'll be sorting the photo's out tomorrow, and then they'll be up on flickr. I'll post the link here as normal.

Whilst looking for some kayak rolling videos I stumbled across this one on YouTube.

God knows what goes through you head when something like this happens but I'm amazed that the paddler comes out of it with what looks like a super cool roll.

Let me know if you want the original's, they are about 360mb, can put on a CD.

That was a good day. Pity I turned up so late, I was just getting into it when it was time to pack up. Amazing what a bit of neoprene can do to your attitude.

Where was the general opinion on where I can go to get a roof rack that attaches onto the bars already on my car. Something like what John (JReast) has?

The weird boat I paddled first (and really liked) had one fastening nut too many so I put it in a pocket for safe keeping, and forgot about it. So I've got one extra if anybody wants to claim it, or has a boat missing one. Strange that I liked it better than the dagger, the dagger looks like a really good design.

Jillis the 2 year old seemed pretty pissed when I got into the kayak without giving him a spin first. Came stubbling over as soon I opened the spraydeck and called him for a ride. So I reckon he'll be hand rolling this time next year.

That rolling video is awesome. He must have been under water for 3 or 4 seconds before popping back up. Then again having an orca land on my kayak like that would make my day if I survived, even if I didn't roll. Could it be a fake?

I had a few difficulties finding roof bars and I started a thread on the subject - there are a few ideas on where you might try looking there.

We talked about that in the bar at the end of the day - the consensus view was that it is genuine footage - apparently (ref PQ) it's not an uncommon event in some waters, and there are a number of other YouTube clips of close encounters with Orca's about to lend credence to that.

Umhh, caught the tail end of the weather forecast this morning.
Not so good.
After today, forecast temps are starting to look more like my school grades (min/max) 1/4, -3/4, -3/4, -6/5, -5/7 ...
Gonna have trouble stopping the kayak hibernating. Now where did I put my skiis?

Anything easier than Ismaning bridge for the next trip? When I was a lad all those years ago, there was a wier on the Trent at Averham where the water came out of the power station and straight over the wier. Water temp was still 15 even in winter. Hotter still on Sunday morning when the station was on full tilt with everyone cooking Sunday lunch. Anyone know anywhere similar in Germany?

Only disadvantage was that if you had to roll in the Trent, two days later you were extremely sick. A lot of people had the same problem at Holme Pierpoint I believe.

Failing that JG where did you get your dry suit from?
JayGee
My drysuit was made by Andi Riley in the UK - he was recommended to me by numerous people and I've had no complaints with mine. He has designs/options specifically designed for paddlers but he also has suitable solutions for most other water sports - I know that he's a very keen sailor himself.

Main advantage is that you get a hard wearing, custom made drysuit at pretty much the same price as you'd pay for an off-the-peg suit.

If you're confident enough to get all the measurements right yourself then Andi can make up the suit to those measurements but most people I know who bought from him went along to him to be measured up. Whether or not he's geared up to post outside the UK is something that you'd have to find out from Andi himself - it's pretty much a one-man band which operates out of his home in Bedford. When I bought mine he had something like a 6 to 8 week lead time on each suit - bearing in mind that most of his business is generated by word of mouth I think this gives a pretty good indication of how well his gear is thought of, but it also means that he's unlikely to be able to help you out quickly.

Here are some links that I found which recommend Andi and provide contact details:

The following is from the WCA - if you have an interest in access rights for paddlers in England and Wales this may be of interest to you and your support would be appreciated.
8<-------------------------------------------------
Dear Friend

The Welsh Canoeing Association (WCA) are currently lobbying the Welsh Assembly to introduce a Land Reform Bill for Wales which would give the right of responsible access to the open countryside and inland waters of Wales. The power to introduce such legislation was transferred from Westminster to Cardiff last July, and we are currently in a position where Assembly members are seriously looking at the WCA proposals. If passed the pressure would greatly increase on Westminster to follow suit for England.

Although the law regarding access to the countryside in England and Wales was recently clarified through the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000), this, however, did not include inland waters. As such water sport enthusiasts often face uncertainty as to their legal rights when utilising non-tidal waters. There is no guarantee that a canoeist, for example, will not be committing an act of trespass by simply traveling down a river where they have not obtained permission from all those who own land along the stretch being paddled. Introducing a Land Reform Bill would remove such uncertainties and allow all to enjoy their natural heritage rather than making it the preserve of a privileged few

If you support idea of a Land Reform Bill for Wales, please sign the online petition at http://petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=2856. The Government of Wales Act (2006) requires the Assembly to act on petitions received if an issue falls within their powers so, if we get enough people to sign, this petition can make a difference .The Welsh Assembly have confirmed that signatures from anywhere in the world are appropriate, so please sign up. It only takes a matter of seconds. Similar lobbying helped in getting the Scottish Parliament to pass the Land Reform Act (2003).

Many thanks for your support. For more information please visit http://www.canoeingisnotacrime.org.uk.

Best regards

Has any progress been made on the possibility of arranging some pool sessions?
polarquest
I think G is going to make contact with the club at Augsburg (as he seems to be the better German speaker) It looks like we will be out there on Saturday, so will also see what we can find out then. Don`t think I`m going to make the Sunday trip to Nurnberg. It also looks like the weather is finally going to crap out for longer trips...ski waxing time!
JReast
There's a prijon dry cag going on fleabay.de up for about €40. 290176512390 At that price, I think it'd be a good buy for anyone getting back into kayaking. Is the current high bid with one of the TT group? No point bidding against ourselves!

Folowing JG's recommendations ordered a couple of kayaking books. My experience of kayaking books in the past is that they've tended to be extremely basic and are somewhat like teaching your grandmother to such eggs. As Jon recommended, kayak by William Nealy is a light hearted look at kayaking but gets the point across another book I picked up "White water safety and rescue" by a Franco Ferrero (ISBN 0-9547061-5-3) is probably one of the best kayaking books I've seen yet. It covers water reading, river running organisation and communication, lots of quality information on rescue techniques etc. Trust me guys if you haven't already got this one buy it. It's worth every cent!
JayGee
Poo! The main zip on my dry suit is buggered - so I won't be paddling anything but flatwater until that gets fixed. sad.gif
JReast
That's the risk you take paddling by the bridge at Ismaning. At least it's only your drysuit.

Okay - so it was a poor choice of words. smile.gif
