As long as you're looking for fiction, the THALIA Buchandlung has quite a good selection, certainly in their branches in the city centre (Spitalerstrasse near the main station/Europa Passage/Grosse Bleichen behind Alsterhaus); not too much in the way of non-fiction, though. Then there's Colon on the Colonnaden (behind the Opera House), although I think they might be a bit more expensive, and the Heinrich-Heine Bookshop on Grindelallee next to the university campus. Stilke at the main station and Dammtor (and probably Altona?) have best-seller/chick-lit paperbacks and magazines. Robert of english-food-and-books might be worth PM'ing, I'm not sure how much book he's got among his foodstuffs these days - and I've seen (irregular) meet-ups for book-swapping posted on here (I think they were all in Eimsbüttel). The public libraries are surprisingly well-stocked with English books: the small library at Doormannsweg/Eimsbüttel is quite good, but even better is the main library at Hühnerposten behind the main station. But as for a Hamburg bookshop dealing in only English? I'd have to pass...

You can order lots of books online at amazon.de
The Thalia as previously mentioned is fabulous - best selection in the city, best view while curled up for a read.
We also swap books occasionally here - not like in Munich. We know what gets swapped down there.

I still have a stock of 15000 books, so it has a selection. And for book people it has a fine selection. Naturally, for avid readers you may see books which you know you must have read, but that is good or not?

In Munich I found the public libraries have a good selection of fiction. Kept me in books my first year.
Then I discoverd bookswapper.com. It is a swapping website with over 1500 titles listed. You chose what you want and it gets mailed to you for 80cents, the sender pays the 80. When you are done you relist it and send it on to someone else. Haven't needed to use the library or buy a book all year!
good luck in your quest.
