In a land-based vehicle under your direct control

So I searched for ‘fastest’ or ‘speed’ but didn’t see anything. I’m surprised that living in the land of the autobahn, this hasn’t come up.

So I ask you: what is the fastest you’ve traveled? The vehicle must be land based, and under your direct control (for the survey) Feel free to post any other numbers below (airplanes, trains, etc).

For me, I maxed out at 262 km/h
Carm
I drove a friends BMW at 280 on the Autobahn... that was fast and scary at the same time, sort of got pissed off when I had to slow down to 200.
JerseyBoy
For me, it was about 250 kph in a BMW 5-series.
Bumpy
240 km. Scheiß governor.
Inflatablewoman
230 km/h in a Z3 down to Salzburg.
Kaos
45 KPH on B Roads.

Okay not fast but when your driving a 60 ton Challenger 2 main battle tank its fast enough.
thefirelane
crap, sorry everyone... I put in KM to be clear and it reset the vote count sad.gif
Johnny English
ha - i just read as mph so that cocked up that survey
Welsh man
I did a parachute jump together with a professional Parachute diver tied to my back. Awsome experience. Dived through the clouds with 230 odd Km/hr.
Dafydd
165 MPH on a CBR900RR on an A road (in dry conditions with good visibility smile.gif )

I assumed MPH so have also fooked up the vote...

strange. The BMWs that could go faster than 250 kph are electronically regulated to top out at 250kph. Was it modded?
Jimbo
Nissan 350Z, V-max'd on the digital speedo at 265km/h. I'd guess the real speed was 10kph or so lower though as most clocks read over at those speeds, sometimes by even more than 10kph.

EDIT: OG, a lot of those limiters are quite 'soft' according to quite a few magazines - IIRC Autocar had an M5 at 167mph before the limited called time.
Carm
OG-not that I know of, I took 3 hours to drive back from Limburg to Munich.
JerseyBoy
It seems that my vote has disappeared... ???
Owain Glyndwr
Limburg on the A3 south east of Cologne?

I was wondering the same thing. We had a 335i last weekend and when I looked over, we were pushing 260...the speedometer goes up to 280 but...

Carm, what was it?
Sin
Used to do shakedown and calibration runs for the heap of shit XJ220's at Millbrook. Whatever one of those things does before it falls apart. You could only do 30 minutes in the morning session and 30 in the afternoon because on the 2 mile bowl fully suited and helmeted you'd get a right 'orrible 'eadache (we weren't issued any neckbraces). Did the job for most of the spring and summer of '93 when I was still young and could concentrate on...

...sorry, what were we talking about again? unsure.gif
Pas
321+! We have Michael Schumacher reading these posts.

'Only' done about 225 but that was fast enough in an Audi Estate and it didn't like it very much.
Jimbo
No, I think we have a bullshitter reading actually...that's 200mph+...

Yeah, the problem is that I can't vote again, once I've already voted. sad.gif

I got my '78 New Yorker Brougham up to 110 mph once with seven other passengers and two cases of beer. I still think that's some kind of record.
Allershausen
About 240kph, on the speedo anyway, in a Volkswagen Corrado I used to own. Stuff comes towards you bloody quick at that speed!

And the "creation of most kinetic energy" award goes to...
Sin
I haven't voted because I don't know what the max speed I've done is. I'm not sure if it was the XJ220's, which were the only supercar we worked on on full speed shakedowns. Driven F40's but never on Millbrook's bowl and only to impress punters with big wallets. Also driven a Ralt-Toyota RT3 in a test, but I don't think that could have been over about 170mph (and we didn't get the sponsorship to do the 1982 season anyway).
mothbola
Much the same as Sin.

Drove a Schuppan 962 Porsche on the Le Mans Airport runway.
Couldn't tell you how fast, but pretty much flatout.
parnell
quite quickly

Did you know Vern then?
Timmeh
Somewhere around 250..not too sure exactly in a brand spanking 2007 BMW 760Li which BMW foolishly lent me. I was too busy wiping sweat from my hands to have a solid look at the speedo.

Under someone elses control I have been about 280 kph in a 911 Twin Turbo.

Not directly, but did know a number of Aussie and Kiwi engineers from the racing team.
Also had a ride in the street legal version of the race car.
MichiS
265 kph on a Honda VTR1000 on German Autobahn.
taxidriver
Drove 280 in a F512TR in 92 on the Fiorano Circuit and it was scary... have hardly gone over 200 ever since

That's the car that put him out of business. I didn't know him personally either.

There has to be somebody who's driven a white van at 350 on a british motorway.

Yeah.. wasn't it some something to do with non-payment from some Japanese buyers?

This could probably come close.
bluedave
About 240/250 as most people in a variety of vehicles.
Derekbeggs
I made 149kmh in my trusty wee twingo, going down hill with a tailwind and using the turbulence from an artic as a catapult.

Bit loud though.
Sin
@mothbola, they had one of those Transits at a British GP back in the 90's somewhen with a DFV in the back (not the one in your link).
slateberry
not fast ..but consistant.some time last year I left Bremen at 23:00 arrived home near hanau at 01:01 aprox 415 km, speed varied between 215 and 225 because of the hills(VW Golf 1.9) very little traffic , arrived home with average speed on the display 198 kmh ! ( this was including the drive onto the autobahn aprox 5 mins and off to my house aprox 10 mins )

That was the cylinder head bouncing off the inside of the bonnet!
Tom17
Not very fast really. About 145Mph(~233kph) in me mates M3 on the M25. Having never gone that fast previously, I was not happy if there were cars in the lane next to me so I had to back off. The bloody thing was still pulling the same as it was at 90-100 (~150kph) though smile.gif

I love driving cars fast but have just never had the opportunity to drive fast cars...
Yeti
I got a diesel VW van up to 118 going downhill on the autobahn, while listening to Queens of the Stone Age.

Jes' the usual instability.

That must qualify as 290 odd in any normal vehicle?

Edit: sorry, just saw the phrase "direct control".
TexMunich
About 1238 km/h when I broke the sound barrier in a T-38 back in military flight school. Those were the days.

Otherwise, 225 km/h in my M3. That was about as fast as I would ever want to go on land. The car ran solid, but just to many obstructions to enjoy - other cars. That was a great car. Needed a family car so it had to go :-(
thefirelane
Cool little bell curve we've got going on... fun to be top side of it smile.gif
Tom17
Sucks being a race driver and being in the middle of the curve :-(
Matt T
About 230, when my company lent me a BMW 5er to go to Stuttgart on business.

I also remember the first time I hit 200 - it was in a rental Vectra, before I lived in Germany, heading to Munich for Oktoberfest.

A part of me thinks that a speed limit on German autobahns would be a good thing, but there's another part that thinks it would be such a shame...

What! give over I used get 75+ KPH out of my old Chieftain back in the days! That only weighed 56 T bombed up! tongue.gif
Fastest I ever got a Mil Veh was 90 MPH in a Fox AFV. I thought I was going to disappear up my own asshole. ( Yes I twiddled the govs)
Fastest car was a BMW 7 265 KPH, I think I was too scared to do more than glance at the speedo! blink.gif
oli2000
My Supra does 275 kph. At least that's what the speedometer says, the navigation thing says it's 250 kph.
grazzenger
277 in a porsche 993 carrera 4 cabrio and 279 in an audi s6. obv the porsche was more fun. the owner of both is my brother-in-law who has just ordered a 997 turbo, so looking forward to seeing the far side of 300 sometime soon. what a nice chap to just lob me the keys and tell me to get on with it.
