Hello all,

I'm moving to Munich one week from today to work an internship for BMW Financial, and they placed into one of their intern complexes on Zwillingstrasse in Milbertshofen. Anyone know the area, or have any general orientation tips to help get me acquainted with the city? Thanks a million!

I used to live 2 blocks away from where you will be living.
I'd say, walk to Knorstrasse, hop on the U2 ubahn, switch to the U3 on the first stop (Scheidplatz) towards Marienplatz, get off at Marienplatz and walk around! You could also skip the U2 and walk directly to the U3 line.
You could also bike down Belgradstrasse or Schleisheimerstrasse and then east on Hohenzollenstrasse until Leopoldtrasse, over there you have a lot of stores and cafes and the University LMU.
In the Neighborhood, you could go the Olympia park, there is a hill over there where you can get a nice view of the city.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to help.

Thanks a lot! Like I said, I get there next Tuesday, but don't start work until September 3rd, so I'll have plenty of time to literally just wander around haha.

How quickly will it take for a bank account to be completely setup? I'll fill out everything my first day somewhere at a Deutsche Bank in the city, but how long might it take for me to get my debit card?

Also, where could I get a cheap, efficient pre-paid phone?

Unfortunately I never did any of those things, Oh, how I envy you, arriving into Munich just in time for The Oktoberfest!

By the way, for the Fest, get on the U2 until Hauptbahnhof and then follow the masses on the U5/U4 till Theresienwiese.
Here is the Ubahn-Sbahn map

You'll find plenty of information if you use the search function (top right corner) as these issues have been discussed time and again. The following banking thread seems to be just what you need: Advice for opening a bank account quickly.

And here are the search results for pre-paid phone services. Happy reading!

Wow, thanks a lot! Sorry I didn't check the Search right off the bat...

Not slagging the area around Milbertshofen U-Bahn station, probably one of the best areas in North Munich,
but the great thing is, with the U2 and U3 you are virtually anywhere in the city within 30 minutes.

You are better off walking to Petuelring - just go south on Schleißheimer Straße - and taking the U3, getting off at Goetheplatz. Much less crowded and no change at Hauptbahnhof - absolute nightmare.
Milbertshofen is a great place to live, everything you need is in walking distance. There is a laundromat at Keferloher/Knorrstraße, and Blücher on Keferloherstraße serves cheap food that sticks to your ribs and is a popular venue for Champions League viewing (get there early or you have a pillar in your way). The public library on Schleißheimer Straße right around the corner from Zwillingstraße has tons of DVDs and videos as well as some English language books. Chinese, Italian and Indian takeaways abound (Punjabi in Kantstraße is very good), the Eboli restaurant at Keferloher/Schleißheimer is pricy but extremely worth while.
Welcome to Munich!
