There was a time when you could cycle to the Englischergarten and get some hashish from the black guys hanging around there. They seem to have vanished so I guess they are plying their business elsewhere now.

Yeah, Giselastraße U-Bahn exit, walk towards English Garden (best later at night), and someone on a bike used to approach you, then go off and talk to some guy, etc etc. I dunno if all that still goes on, but even if it does, I would avoid it man.

My mate got nabbed down there, and it took 6 policemen in a van to search him there & then, and another 2 at the station for a strip search/form filling etc. They found 1.2 g of hash on him, and the judge threw it out of court as ridiculous. Total waste of police time & money, but as I have always said, the police in germany are the most militant police in Europe.

Theres loads of hash & weed about in Munich like anywhere in Europe, and thanks to the advancements made in hybrid breeding and hydroponics by the good people of Holland, most grass here is actually grown in Germany. Just ask a native friend to help out - I know almost nobody here, but most people I meet seem to puff to some extent.

I went on a field trip to the fountain proposed by Karen (there is a practical side to academic research), and there were one or two guys sitting on the benches around but they didn’t seem interested, and genuinely seemed to be watching the children playing in the fountain.

I didn’t ask any of them directly, but thought it was obvious I was hoping someone would offer me something. Is there a specific time of day, maybe they prefer after dark ?

Having also done a thesis on drug use & abuse I can confirm that there are several options pertaining to the procurement of recreational drugs in Munich without putting yourself at risk from approaching strange geezers on bikes.

As a non-drug-consumer-researcher, I would only offer this little bit of adviceadditional information: it might also be good to focus on the fact that drug deals between people who don't know each other have been known to result in the distribution of very poor quality or otherwise engineered/modified product which could be very harmful to the consumer's health.

You also have to register it and get a permit from the local police. Just like germany to have a permit for everything

No way you can grow your own in ultra conservative Bavaria, where 6- 8 policemen will happily waste hours and hours and hours of tax payers money trying to process somebody for possession of less than 1 gram of poor quality hashish.

Actually, Bavaria has one of the higher Eigenbedarf limits. Three units for 6 gramm total.
Unless you're caught with it in certain places, such as schools, hospitals, some youth event or while driving your car, and only unless you've been caught with any in the past year.

Possesion varies by state, no? Or are the police just super lax in Düsseldorf? I was told there that you could carry 7g. In Bavaria, judges might chuck it out of court, but the local coppers WILL nick you for anything. Were they not swabbing people in the English Garden a couple of years back with some sweat analysis machine? (without having any evidence other than seeing somebody with long hair)

Why is Bavaria so conservative about marijuana? Is it to protect the beer industry? You would think that by 2008, and having Switzerland so close they would be more relaxed about this "drug".

I think that could be said about a lot of places, why dont they just do like the Dutch? What a wonderful world it would be for us bun heads, but, sadly, it aint going to happen.
It's being reclassed in the UK from a class C to a class B. The classification doesn't matter much, the police will in most cases leave you off with a caution, unless you are pulling the piss and smoking a big fat one walking down Oxford Street.

Anyway, as correctly mentioned above, you are allowed small ammounts fror personal use under German FEDERAL law but how this law is enforced variies by state.
As DonR says, the bavarian police will use a lot ofresources for the TINIEST ammounts of cannabis.
The CSU has one if its guiding principles that Bavaria and Munich in particular should be VERY "safe".
Fro what I hear, the availability of illegal drugs is lower in Munich and the prices higher than in other German cities.

You can use this for your amusement. Buy large bags of Vogelfutter and plant the hemp seeds all over the city.

Bird seed is usually treated (microwaved?) so that the seeds won't germinate though of course some are fertile.
I suppose once you have a plant or two on the go it isn't too much hassle but if you know where to buy it, just going and doing so is easier.

As has been pointed out above, the public places where you might find some street dealing are policed, as the government doesn't want any kind of recognisable drugs "scene" developing around a fixed location.

The Bavarian police do stake outs to catch cyclists going the wrong way or riding without the correct reflectors. For anyone that doesn't know and thinks I'm being sarcastic, I'm not, they do this. So it doesn't surprise me that they have plenty of time to bust people with weed as well. Although I appreciate the lack of crime in Munich, often I do think that maybe they do have a bit too much time on their hands.

When applying for the "weed growing permit" at your local police station, don't forget to bring along your illegal gun hidden in the nightstand.
