The Schleißheimer Strasse is blocked between Frankfurter Ring and Neuherbergstrasse after an unexploded (duh!) bomb from WW II was found during construction work. Sheesh, I used to live around there and drove along that stretch of road about three times a month. How many more might there be?

Thousands if not millions. Better to find it like this than to be blown up on the autobahn or at a bus stop.

Rumour has it that they found a couple when dismanteling Riem airport...gives a whole new meaning to the term "airport security"... ph34r.gif

How dangerous are these things really? I mean, they seem to be found quite regularly, but it's not often that you hear of one just going off spontaneously.

I wonder if they'll find one in the lot behind here that is being dug up to make room for a new high rise. The lot hadn't been built on properly before. unsure.gif

Actually I don't really remember hearing about any of them going off spontaneously as long as I've lived in Munich (about 6 years). Guess it's not really a big deal - but better safe than sorry...and blown to pieces. ph34r.gif

There is tons of unexploded ordnance under German cities. Remember that these things were steel encased and had hardened casings to go through concrete before detonating, dropped from a mile high sometimes the fuses did not work properly and they just went straight into the ground. TNT was used as the explosive in these bombs, TNT degrades over time and becomes more and more unstable, the slightest knock could detonate it. Most German cities were bombed to obliteration during the WWII, Augsburg for example was so heavily bombed that the city was mixed into the ground and you could not tell the streets from the houses. Munich was 70% destroyed and Berlin was raised to the ground, nevermind Dresden which was UNESSCESSARILY firebombed to cause maximum human casualties.

It´s not like in the movies where the though gets blown in the air then, dusts himself off and saves the planet. A bomb will shred you to pieces quicker than you can blink. Not a nice sight. sad.gif
I once had to dig a trench in the courtyard of an old house in Schwabing, with an excavator, I dug up a long cylinder and just about shat myself, but it turned out to be an old parafin-heater. There`s me poking at this thing with a stick and wondering if it`ll go off. ohmy.gif Felt a bit stupid I can tell you. 5 mins later I managed to start work again and smashed a window in the house with the excavator. Then I really felt stupid and out of pocket. sad.gif

Makes you wonder why people worry about something as innocent as bombs - with you around... ph34r.gif

As I said, autobahn and bus stop kablooey! In 10 years of living here, those are the only two that I know of that went kablooey. In that same time, they have probably found 20-30 in and around Munich (about one every 4-6 months).

England also have their fair share of WWII UXBs

Yeah, but that's smelly old nazi bombs - not the funky stuff we got here. cool.gif

I would call a V2 thingy pretty funky. Better than anything the allies had.

The one found was British this time. 500 pounder I believe they said.
