Hi there Toytowners, lovely site you got here, very professional. biggrin.gif

Have had a good look round but now feel it's time to ask my own question...

Myself and my brothers are heading over to Munich for a long weekend at the end of August and we are looking for an outdoor activity to do on the Saturday within Munich or within easy public transport distance?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and be gentle on the newbie please! ohmy.gif

How old are you, what kind of stuff you all like?
Easiest answer would be to hire bikes, ride down the River Isar, go for a swin, got to a beer garden.
Watch hw much you drink with the bikes mind.

Between 30-40, I imagine a lot of the time will be spent in beer gardens etc. but trying to organise something inbetween that.

Not sure they would all be up for cycling and swimming, perhaps visiting a decent tourist attraction/mountain views/lake or something.

A football game ight be fun, a boat trip on one of the lakes?
Get one of the cheap train tickets and go out to Prien am Chiemsee. Little steam railway and boats on the lake perhapss.

I'm a tour guide (busy as hell toward the end of the month, but...) if you need a guide to the tourist sites around Munich, I'm a hell of a lot cheaper direct than through a company.

Otherwise, I'd hit up the beer and oktoberfest museum, could do a beer tour, maybe http://www.radiusmunich.com/tours/beer

That includes a meal, a few beers, and going through the beer and oktoberfest museum...lasts from 6pm-9ish...usually a bit after 9, leaves you off at the Hofbraeuhaus...and it is NOT a pub crawl. The guide gives you the history of beer, explains the bavarian beers and foods, etc.

You dont say how many you are but 5 people can travel on a Bayern ticket ( reduced price train ticket for groups ) .

Step one : Buy one of these at ticket machine ( press the flag button to get english instructions )

step two :Take S Bahn or U bahn to Munich Ost train station ,

Step three : take train from platform 8 to Rosenheim

step four : 30 minutes later alight in Rosenheim , follow crowds to Rosenheim Herbstfest

Step five : Find table ( try to get here before midday )

Step six : Say ( however many you are ) Maß bitte , recieve , pay , drink .

Repeat as necessary , catch the last train back to Munich @ 11-00 pm.

The Fest is a warm up for the Oktoberfest , with all the latest rides and attractions and better cheaper beer , this year Maß Marzen 6,30 € , half a chicken 5,90€,
Fish on a stick ( dependant on weight ) average 6,50 € .

Enjoy .

More so the swim in the Isar if that is what you choose.

Garmish is very beautiful and is right outside of Munich. Here's a site with some pics: http://travel.webshots.com/album/194944071cNAbvg

1) The Rosenheim trip looks brilliant. I know most of the good Munich activities, but I've missed out on that trip. That ticket is a steal too.
2) Seriously consider bikes as a great way to get around the city if the weather is good. Not as a sport. And you will also need a break from all of that boozing.
3) We often hire inflatable boats for a day on the river. Its not too dramatic this time of year. So you won't need the gear as shown below. But it's a good mix of action and boozing and end up, of course, at a beergarden.

Hi there,

My tip: to get into the Alps, take the train out of Munich to Lenggries. From there I think thereÄs a mountain bike firm whoÄ'd hire you bikes to get to Sylvensteiner speicher Dam. There you'd start to see the real Alps. Try thatr.

Mind you I reckon you won't get that far as the beer will whyk you like Iit does most of us. You will most likely end up pissed in a beer garden. Only being realistic here.

I would take Mike up on his offer of being a tour guide...he knows his stuff

Went on a tour of Salzburg with him in April and he made it very interesting

Well we are heading out tomorrow to your lovely town and really looking forward to it. cool.gif

Thanks again for all your input, I will post again next week and let you know how our trip went.

One last question, do the late bars/clubs fuss over dress codes, in other words do we need to be concerned with bringing shirts and shoes with us if we want to continue partying until the small hours?

Once again thanks for all your help biggrin.gif
