I heard this on the news today: Due to inclement weather Salzburg - under a new law - has closed off the main routes to the city center for non-Austrian cars. Policemen are instructed to single out cars with out of state (sic) license plates and direct them to the Exhibition Grounds from whence the day-tourists can take public transportation into the city. The €10 parking fee includes a day pass for up to five people on public transport.
Having driven in Salzburg in rain and shine this quite appeals to me, traffic conditions are generally bad and sign posts non-existent or unhelpful. Tip: If you do head to Salzburg always take some kind of rain protection no matter what the weather report says as the Salzburger Schnürlregen occurs very suddenly and leaves you drenched.
