So, leave a note on this thread if you're into House, Techno, Electro, D&B, Trance or similar and want/need more people to go check out the hotspots with...

So yeah, clubbing's great fun, but it's a bit of a mission motivating yourself to go if it's just you and you don't speak the local language so well... Hopefully this thread will unite the heads and find the people on here that are up for something a little more hardcore/musically-oriented than an evening down the boozer... If there's enough of us, perhaps we could organise a few nights out..?

My tip for this Friday is FOO club on Hamburger Beck. Fairly small venue, gets a bit hot and sweaty, but on Friday night they have some decent breakbeat DJs over from the UK as well as Berlin's Lars Moston representing Splank! Records. If you're into the breaks sound there's not that many other options in town yet (until I get settled and start running an event myself!) - this is one of the best I've found so far.

Sami,
I have been wondering about good places to go dancing in Hamburg. I assume there are discos in the Reeperbahn although I figure they are most likely expensive and full of tourists this time of year. I'm mostly into trance, garage and hip hop. It would be great if we could get some people together to go out one night.

Sami
Awesome, I was just starting to despair at the lack of responses to this thread and think all the Hamburg English-speakers were more up for pipe-and-slippers type antics...

So, Trance-wise, I hear there's a club at the St Pauli end of the Reeperbahn called Tunnel (I think) - plays Hard Trance and Hardstyle kinda stuff... which I don't mind as the atmosphere at that kind of event tends to be good even though the music's not my cup of tea (although if I get lean enough...).
There are some good Goa (psy) trance afterparties at this funny little dive called the Astoria - again, good atmosphere but the venue is, as I've said already, a dive. If you're from London and ever went to an after-hours club at the 414 or George IV in Brixton, you'll know the score.

Garage - I don't think you'll find any in Hamburg (unless it's maybe US Garage, but I'm guessing you mean the UK variety).

Hip-Hop - Hamburg is supposed to be home to a thriving German-language hip-hop scene, I think there may even be a big breakdancing thing coming up soon (there was one last year around now according to an old copy of Prinz magazine I picked up which said it was an annual thing...). If Kraut-hop ain't your thing there's a few clubs in the Reeperbahn/Grosse Freiheit area that play yer standard international, more commercial hop-hop, including LOVE (who I work for - and I don't mind abusing my position to sort free entry for you and a couple of mates if you want ) - although to be fair I am really looking for people to go out partying with that aren't in my work circle (I don't like mixing business with pleasure too much!) We charge €3 for a beer, which is pretty much the going rate for clubs in this city - it's what I pay anywhere else. Anyway, LOVE plays mostly hip-hop and urban stuff during the week (Tuesdays has more of a latino edge, Wednesdays more R&B, Thursday and Friday Hip-Hop), Saturday commercial/funky/electro-house and club classics.

Halo, next door to us at LOVE plays some pretty decent, more underground tech-house and electro on Sunday mornings...

I'm mostly into breaks, techno, electro, minimal etc - more underground sounds really which is why I feel I need to start exploring a few parties that are a bit off the beaten track - although I still don't really feel up to it on my own...

But hey, that's two of us now... any more people up for it?
silty1
I was out with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago and the door man wouldn't let us in because we looked too old! The pipe-and-slippers might be a while away, but we're no longer in our twenties, so that was it. It's not for lack of desire to go out and have a good time.
Sami
Well, I'm out of my 20s now but have been blessed with a youthful countenance!

To be fair though a club that isn't letting you in because you're 'too old' is either gonna be full of teenagers or because maybe you were somehow dressed inappropriately? Some places have a fairly strict policy about not letting people in that look like they've come straight from the office. But most more underground clubs where people go for the music rather than just to see and be seen tend to not be fascists about stuff like that.
silty1
It was past midnight on a Saturday and we weren't fresh from our office jobs. It's ageism, pure and simple.
Sami
Well, ageism could be the reason, but I'd have thought if they're knocking back people in their 30s it's either because you looked 'wrong' somehow, the door policy was against groups of single guys or the average age in there was 17-18.
I work in the clubbing industry (as you can probably tell, haha) and none of the venues I've ever worked in/with has had a 'no old people' policy. a: Because usually older clubbers have better jobs = more disposable income to spend on the bar and b: because older people usually feel uncomfortable and stop going to clubs before the wrinkles really set in.

Just out of interest, which was the club and what night of the week?
silty1
Saturday night past midnight, and on Grosse Freiheit... right-hand side as you come from the Reeperbahn about two or three doors down. Don't remember the name.
Sami
Probably Halo. Never actually been in there on a Saturday though - only ever Sunday morning when all the freaks come out to play... smile.gif
marymanu
Sami,
I am more into underground hip hop than the commercial crap they play on the radio/MTV/clubs but I haven't been out dancing in long enough that it might just be alright. Does anyone have any desire to check out some hip hop venues with me?
As for Garage, I have to be honest that it's been awhile since I have been around the club scene. Last I checked it was UK Garage and it meant poppy trance with female vocals. Can I find anything like that around here?
Sami
Mary,

UK Garage evolved quite a bit then died a bit of a death since those days - it's always been more house- than trance-based though. Chance of finding clubs playing UKG in Hamburg are slim - minimal I suspect - you might get a bit of Vocal House but that's about it.
I'm more keen on the Underground Hip-Hop myself - the commercial stuff doesn't do it for me really, I'm not into all that flashy bling bling crap, or hanging around looking moody in expensive sportswear! However, I've yet to check out the underground HH scene here yet - mostly cos I'm thinking I won't get as much out of it if all the lyrics are in German, but having said that, a friend of mine's been telling me I really should go check it out so maybe a voyage of discovery could be on the agenda sometime in the next couple of weeks..?
marymanu
Sami,
Sure that sounds good. My neighbor has told me about the German hip hop scene and offered to lend me a few CDs. I guess I should take him up on that. Now I just have to convince my husband to come out to the German hip hop shows (he's more of a rock kind of guy.) I wonder if my neighbor would like to come too? It'd be more fun with a big group of people I think.
~ Laurel (marymanu)
Sami
Well, there are hip hop and rock bars on Hamburger Berg so maybe we could try to combine the two and keep everyone happy? A spot of light barhopping...

and sorry for guessing at your name and getting it wrong.. wink.gif
marymanu
@Sami,
Not a problem about the name. That's not why I signed off like that. I know it's easier to stick to handles around here as to add confusion.

Anyways, a night of hip hop, rock, etc sounds good. Any other takers?
Sami
Anyone fancy next weekend?
psychedelics
Mayday for classic rockers?? =)
Maz
Hi guys
I wanna come too! bar/clubhopping that is. I did a bit of the hiphop scene a few years ago but didn´t like the amount of teenagers and bling bling shit goin on. I havn´t done the trance thing since the late 90´s, got nothin against it. I´m really into rock, good hiphop and anything that makes me dance. I don´t care just wanna get mashup with good open English speakin people and good music.
I´m on tour from th 16th though and back a bit in between. If I miss you this time then see ya nex time. By the way I think weekdays are the best time to go out in Hamburg, weekends can get a bit too touristy. But i´ll go with the flow
Maz
willum
Hi Maz, you seem to have added me to your friends, I don´t believe we know each other.
Maz
Oh sorry
Thought it worked like myspace. If you´re interested in someone then you add them as a friend (don´t worry I´m not trying to pull you) anyway whatev I´m new
see ya Maz
silty1
a clear example of the myspacification of the internet
Maz
Hi Silty
What do you mean by that? do you think it´s a bad thing?
Sami
OK, so I've seen something on this Saturday which I think might be quite fun... it's a Drum and Bass/Breakbeat/Electro party at the Rote Flora in Sternschanze, which for those that don't know is the big old building by the skate-park covered in cool graffiti next to the climbing wall. I've never been in there so I can't say what it's like, but judging from the exterior and the fact it's run by squatters means I'm guessing it'll have a pretty grimy, underground feel to it, so it might not be to the taste of the nice shoes brigade. However, someone might be able to give a little more info - but anyway, I think unless something else amazing crops up, I'm gonna check this place out. So if anyone's keen to come, PM me and we'll arrange a meet somewhere beforehand.

I ´ll probably come down after work. I think I finish about 11pm. I´m only feelin Headshakaz, but whatev. I´ve been to see a couple of bands at the Rota Flora, it´s just what you think, pretty rundown but a good venue with two levels. The people that run it are easy going and extreme left. Anyway post if you guys are meeting first ( or on Thurs)
Sami
Coolness!

I mean, I have no clue who most of these people are but if it's grimy and electronic it's bound to be a nice antidote to the large amounts of commercial stuff I've been having to deal with since I moved here!
Sami
OK, so who's keen for this tonight then...?

I'll check back here around 10pm... probably won't go out till 11 or 12 though...
Jarek
i'm up for next friday or sat...arriving on Tue so should be getting over jet lag...mostly into hip-hop and some old school house..I'm old...34...
Sami
Yeah, there's plenty of that kind of thing around as well! I've had rather a lot of it recently, hence my wanting to get back to some more Underground business for a change... but keep it coming.
Sami
Whoah... guys! Hold the phone!!!

I am an idiot! This was yesterday!

Aaaargh!

really sorry...

For some reason when I posted this I thought the 7/9 was a Saturday and it just stuck in my head! rolleyes.gif

So... err... anyone got any other plans?
marymanu
Sorry I haven't checked in in awhile. Did you guys make it out? I'm still interested. My girlfriend is in town from San Francisco and we want to go out dancing tonight with some friends (Friday the 14th.) Anyone have any good ideas?
Sami
I didn't have any plans to go out tonight but I can put you on the guestlist for LOVE if you want and we can have a couple of drinks? I've PM'd you my mobile number so if you want to come, text me names and I'll sort it out.

It's a hip-hop night tonight.
kwinz
This is kind of last minute, but tonight as part of the Reeperbahnfestival DJ EASE (of Nightmares on Wax, downbeat/minimal/electro/hip-trip hop) is playing at Neidklub (? I think that's right). I really want to go but day tickets for the festival are €26 and that is too poor for us student types. But apparently if you turn up they have door sales for €13 -€14. If anyone is keen, I could use a buddy!
Sami
I didn't realise that was the guy from Nightmares On Wax. A friend of mine invited me to go to that last night but I didn't go - mostly because I didn't feel like paying loads to get in either, especially as I was a bit short of Euros, and also with a cold on the way...

would be up for organising something in the next week or so... also my offer still stands - if anyone wants to come to LOVE tonight I can organise guestlist - music tonight (saturday) is House & Electro. I will definitely be here for some of the night, although for how long depends on who takes me up on it... wink.gif
marymanu
Sami,
I'm so sorry it didn't work out last week. Now I've got a cold too! But maybe next weekend. I'm still hoping to find a good place to go dancing.
Sami
well all things going to plan I'm back in England for the next couple of weekends, but once I'm back, it's all go again... smile.gif
funkybananas
Hi there!

New to the site and new to Hamburg (ok not new but I have just started a job here two weeks ago smile.gif )

Does anyone know of any nights in the city that play detroit techno or any sites which might have such info? I'm craving a night of techno nonsense!!! cool.gif

Cheers muchly for any advice!!!
Sami
errrm... no - is the simple answer - that doesn't mean there aren't any - simply I haven't found them yet. I can point you in the direction of some deep electro afterhours business - but as far as 'detroit' techno goes, I'm a little stumped. Is what Hawtin plays these days counted as "Detroit"? Most of the edgier electronic music I have come across so far in HH has been either Minimal or Goa.
kwinz
Hey all,

Haven't checked this thread for a couple of months. Sami, out of curiosity, do you work at LOVE, or know someone who does?

Also, Digitalism (Hamburg electro duo) played last Friday with Peaches at Uebel und Gefaehrlich - did anyone go? I had to miss it and would be very interested to hear how it was.

If anyone knows of any gigs or good club nights coming up, let us know!
Sami
I work for the owner of LOVE but not actually for the club itself. I'll tell you what I do exactly over a beer or something sometime, can't really be arsed to go into it in great detail on here but it involves all kinds of stuff from writing to PR and marketing and a bunch of other things - I live above the club as well, it's a bit like having a nightclub for a living room!

However, my personal taste musicwise tends to be a bit more gritty, dark and underground than the stuff on offer in the club, hence the fact I am still always looking for people to go explore a few of the more esoteric venues on offer round the city. Don't get me wron, LOVE does some great nights - if you're into hip hop/R&B/'Black Music' then you can't fail to enjoy the Friday nights, and we do a good House night on Saturdays, but I am also into techno, breakbeat, D&B, dubstep etc and LOVE doesn't really cover that side of the market at all.

I heard about the Peaches gig but I was a bit short of cash and had already made other plans by the time anyone had told me about it anyway... But I'd be up for similar in future so please do let me know if you're planning on something similar... I seem to remember you were going to go to that thingy with whatshisname from Nightmares On Wax as well, which would have been fun as well...
Jarek
ya'll give me a shout once you decide when the group picks a place for this weekend. Open both nights...
marymanu
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that there will be a great hip hop show on Monday 14th July at Waagenbau - Atmosphere and Brother Ali. Two amazing rappers from Minneapolis, Minnesota who represent the underground hip hop label Rhymesayers. I've seen Atmosphere five times live and Brother Ali twice, and I can definitely recommend them.

August, 14 2008 at Waagenbau
Max-Brauer-Allee 204
Cost : €15

Not sure if I will be there sad.gif as I am traveling all day but hopefully I can drag myself out!
Poppins
Ooh from my hometown- they are SO good! I am definitely going to try to make it!
marymanu
Hey I should probably make that announcement a separate thread so it goes up on the calendar. Will do so now.
