Repair of rolling shutters and blinds (Rollladen)

Service center recommendations, and general advice

The rolling blind/shutter thing ("rollladen") outside one of my windows is knackered.

Can anyone recommend a service center or repairman that will be able to fix it for a reasonable price?

(I've already asked my Hausmeister - he didn't want to know.)

Malc, there's a place beside my old apartment which may be able to help you. They specialise in those things. Can't remember the name of the place but the address is Ganghoferstr 80-somethingorother. Take the U4/U5 to Schwanthalerhöhe, walk down Ganghoferstr and it's about 5 minutes down on your right-hand-side.

Whats the problem with it..??

They are hardly the most intricate piece of machinery.

If its not a "slat" that is broken, it is often the Webbing on the Primary slat that has worn out and needs re-attaching to the Roller.

Most part are available from OBI etc..

The problem seems to be that the reel that you pull to lower/raise the shutter has come off the wheel and wrapped itself round the mechanism, jamming the entire thing.

I'd have a go at it myself, but it looks like you need to get to it from outside, and I'm on the 3rd floor.

The 3rd floor does present a problem, otherwise, they're as easy to fix a changing a bicycle tire. Maybe if you relpelled off the roof, you could get to it safe enough. wink.gif

3rd Floor...

Option 1...Use a safety net and harness!! tongue.gif

Option 2... Get someone else to do it. wink.gif

This chap is Next to our office. Speaks no English, but by all accounts, knows what he is doing.

Phone your landlord/landlady. They probably know someone.

I've got a climbing rope, harness, and all the necessary gear. wink.gif

Thanks for the tips, people.

I found a shop not far from me that seems to specialise in these shutter things, so I'll see what they say about it.

@showem, can't ask the landlord - he might ask how I broke it ph34r.gif

Looking at your picture (if the picture is your blind!) I'd suggest access to the mechanism was from inside of the apartment...

To breathe life into an old thread and ask if anyone has more recent experience... Our new palace has old wooden shutter blinds on all windows and they're all showing their age a bit. I'm considering replacing the whole lot while the place is a building site anyway and for that added touch of luxury making them all electrical. If anyone can point us to a reliable place to get a quote I would be very grateful.

TIA.

Careful - if you live in a block of flats and own the flat yourself, you still have to get permission from the other owners to allow you to alter the external appearance of the building. If you don't own the flat yourself, then check with your landlord if you are allowed to change anything, as he is ultimately responsible (under the standard contract).

Just seen this thread.

I've broken the (internal) mechanism for my shutters. Would you

a. Tell the Hausmeister and risk letting the landlord know you're not being gentle with the property
b. Repair it yourself at work - and hope that you don't make thngs worse
c. Find someone who actually repairs these things (and any reccomendations will be welcome).

If anyones interested the coiled spring has broken so it is no longer attached to the central point. Its just a case of punching a new hole in the spring and reattaching it...
Katrina
How boxed in is it? And was drink involved when it broke? wink.gif
rich_mole
I've removed the mechanism and found out what's wrong (so its not boxed in). The problem was the (frayed) strap came away from the coil and the spring-back caused the spring to snap at the join. I was however a little tipsy when it happened (but looking at it afterwards would suggest it was waiting to happen). hence the issues with telling the hausmeister

Thanks UA, I know all about this stuff... I'm the owner of the flat, and several other people have already replaced the blinds in other flats so the permission to do this is just a necessary inconvenience. I'd like to get a quote to have any idea how much it will all cost as money is a bit tight...

a) Rolladen seem to be quite suseptible to damage - at least if it goes wrong once, it'll always happen again - my bedroom rolladen always managed to eat its "hoisting-strap" until the repair guy replaced it with a brand new one.
cool.gif they are quite easily repairable if, e.g. the strap has come off the roller, but I wouldn't try any harder repairs myself
c) The repair man mentioned in a) was from a "Rolladen-Speciallist" in Feldmochingerstr (SANDL GMBH FELDMOCHINGER STR. 15 80992 MÜNCHEN (089) 1402520), but there are many others in Munich, a quick search in google for "rolladen münchen" finds many links to companies.

Thanks woolleym, I'll give the Rolladen-Specialist a ring. The problem with searching on Google, as opposed to acting on a personal reccomendation, is it throws up the complete spectrum of handwerker, from the truly excellent to the totally awful.
